How to Get Rid of Unwanted Thoughts

Updated on April 22, 2014

Everyone has negative thoughts from time to time, but are yours thoughts that will not go away no matter how hard you try to fight them? & Where are these thoughts coming from?!

Unwanted, uncontrollable thoughts are known as Intrusive Thoughts. These are often associated with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder or OCD. In this case, the thoughts are considered to be obsessions.

Possible Causes

  • Feeling like you don't have control over situations in your life
  • Having bottled up feelings on the inside and/or unforgiveness
  • Stress
  • Anxiety/Worry/Fear
  • Depression
  • Not getting over a traumatic event
  • Loneliness/Idleness
  • Self blame

If the thoughts are causing you significant distress...

  • problems sleeping
  • social and relationship issues
  • problems on the job or at home
  • audible thoughts
  • violent or suicidal thoughts

...Talk with a professional. Spending time with a counselor may help with exploring what the root cause is and work toward practicing coping skills and finding better peace for you.

Not dealing with the issue could lead to more serious mental health issues.

Using Your Faith for Answers

As mentioned before, everybody has negative thoughts.

Make it a habit to replace negative/intrusive thoughts with what you know in your heart to be the truth. You may want to acknowledge the thought, but don't dwell on it. There is a difference.

For example..."My thoughts are telling me XYZ...but I know in my heart (or the Word says) ABC."

Replace a negative thought with a positive one; Replace a lie with the truth.

Meditate on the Word of God - It's helpful to read relevant scriptures out loud. Also, personalize each one as you meditate on them. Here are a few...

Romans 12:2 " transformed by the renewing of your mind."

2 Corinthians 10:4-5 "For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds; Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ."

James 4:7 "Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you."

I John 4:18 "...Perfect love casts out fear."

Philippians 4:8 "Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things."

Pray - Pray against the unwanted thoughts. Ask God to help you, and pray in the name of Jesus.

Know that you are not alone in this, and don't be afraid to contact someone for support.
