Go Big Or Go Home: Inspirational Quotes, Pictures, and Videos

Updated on March 25, 2017

A good friend and I started saying “Go big or go home” the last time we spent time together. This has been one of my 2015 catchphrases, and it has helped me to realize how valuable taking risks is in order to live a full, adventurous life. I have found a handful of inspiring quotes related to this motto, and I hope they help motivate you to take more chances and dare greatly in the days, weeks, and years to come. Enjoy!

Jules Vern: “You will travel in a land of marvels.”

Robert H. Schuller: “Never make your most important decisions when you are in your worst moods.”

Theodore Roosevelt: “There are two things that I want you to make up your minds to do. First, that you are going to have a good time as long as you live—I have no use for the sour-faced man—and next, that you are going to do something worthwhile, that you are going to work hard and do the things you set out to do.”

“From our deepest wounds come our greatest gifts.” Po Bronson, What Am I Going To Do With My Life?

G.K. Chesterton: “The true object of all human life is play.”

“In time, a lot of time, after I left Friday’s and Nashville on a fellowship that allowed me to write my first novel, I came to see that there was something liberating about failure and humiliation. Life as I had known it had been destroyed so completely, so publicly, that in a way I was free, as I imagine anyone who walks away from a crash is free. I didn’t have expectations anymore, and no one seemed to expect anything from me. I believed that nothing short of a speeding car could kill me. I knew there was nothing I couldn’t give up.” Ann Patchett, This Is The Story of a Happy Marriage

“I beg you…to have patience with everything unresolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves as if they were locked rooms or books written in a very foreign language. Don’t search for the answers, which could not be given you now, because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps then, someday far in the future, you will gradually, without even noticing it, live your way into the answer.” Rainer Maria Rilke, Letters To A Young Poet

Mark Twain: “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did. So, throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream.”

Norman Vincent Peale: “Empty pockets never held anyone back. Only empty heads and empty hearts can do that.”

Wayne Gretzky: “You miss 100 percent of the shots you don’t take.”

Pablo Picasso: “When I was a child, my mother said to me, ‘If you become a soldier, you will become a general. If you become a monk, then you will end up as Pope.’ Instead, I became a painter, and wound up as Picasso.”

Dr. Patch Adams: “You might not always be able to relieve pain, but you can always relieve suffering. It’s a choice to love life.”

Charles Dubois: “The important thing is this: to be ready at any moment to sacrifice what you are for what you could become.”

Melody Beattie: “Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend.”

Howard Thurman: “Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.”

What makes you come alive?

“I think one of the keys to happiness is accepting that I am never going to be perfectly happy. Life is uncomfortable. So I might as well get busy loving the people around me. I’m going to stop trying so hard to decide whether they are the ‘right people’ for me and just take deep breaths and love my neighbors. I’m going to take care of my friends. I’m going to find peace in the ‘burbs. I’m going to quit chasing happiness long enough to notice it smiling at me.” Glennon Doyle Melton, Carry On, Warrior

Horace Mann: “We must be purposefully kind and generous, or we miss the best part of existence. The heart that goes out of itself gets large and full of joy. This is the great secret of the inner life. We do ourselves the most good doing something for others.”

Coco Chanel: “If you were born without wings, do nothing to prevent them from growing.”

Georgia O’Keeffe: “I’ve been absolutely terrified every moment of my life—and I’ve never let it keep me from doing a single thing I wanted to do.”

Clare Booth Luce: “There are no hopeless situations. There are only people who have grown hopeless about them.”

Sara Teasdale: “I make the most of all that comes. And the least of all that goes.”

It's beautiful when people follow their dreams...

Georgia OKeefe painting is magnificent...and the quotes are the bomb (as they say in some circles); Patch Adams quote nails it for me.
