Hyperthyroidism and Children

Updated on May 27, 2016

Is there anyone else who experienced something similar and their children suffer from any type of illness that possibly correlates to your decisions not to medicate during the majority- if not all of your pregnancy?

Within a month of finding out I was pregnant with my oldest son, I was diagnosed with have hyperthyroidism. Within a month of that diagnosis; I was diagnosed with Graves' Disease. I tried to research medications, side effects, endocrinology, you name it without letting my hormones overwhelm me. My end result: I refused all thyroid treatment and medication until I was about 7 1/2 months pregnant. I wanted to make sure that my son was physically developing properly and had a chance at a normal birth.

Here we are twelve years later and my son is having issues with anxiety, learning disabilities; and possibly the worst allergies known to man. He had his tonsils and adenoids removed at about six years old; after being on allergy medications since birth. It was very hard finding an endocrinologist that accepted me and my unborn child as priority.
