Bed Bug Bites

How to kill bed bugs proficiently and to break the breeding cycle, firstly, you need to understand your enemy.

The most common of bed bugs ( Cimex lectularius ) is similar to all the bed bugs in the fact that it feeds off of your blood, every day. Bed bugs are parasitic insects which live and breed in the soft material of the bed and pillows.

Although usually associated with beds, they can also be found in other soft furnishings, pet bedding, and even in auto mobiles. Adults are only approximately 4 mm long and 2 mm wide.

Bed bugs are attracted to humans by the emitting of carbon monoxide whilst we sleep and the warmth from the human body. Detecting whether or not an area has bed bugs is not so difficult. Bed bugs emit a characteristic smell of almonds, coriander or very ripe raspberries.

Putting your nose to the bed to sniff up this aroma to detect bed bugs is not advisable. The bugs need to shed their skin six times in their lifetime to get to adult size. The shed skins are opaque to clear in color and can be found with the naked eye if a person is looking close enough.

The eradication and extermination of bed bugs is not a very simple process.

Bed Bugs Infestation

Since 1995, the rate of reported bed bug infestations has risen alarmingly, and it is still on the increase. They can spread easily to other homes through walking, or being transferred on a persons clothes.

If you visit a home with bed bugs, or mites as they are sometimes referred as, the likelihood that they will transfer to your home is 50/50. The rapid reproduction rate of this blood sucking creature will mean that from one single female bed bug, an infestation of thousands could occur over a short period of time.

They will rapidly spread from room to room feeding off of each person or pet. At this stage of infestation, it would be necessary to contact environmental health for them to be eradicated, and they will charge you.

Bed Bug Sprays

There are many ways which could help reduce the spread and reproduction of bed bugs whilst also killing bed bugs. Hoovering the mattress and carpets regularly will suck up some of the eggs, larvae, and adults.

A bag less hoover / vacuum cleaner would be better for this purpose, and should be cleaned out after every use. The weekly washing should always be carried out of the bedclothes.

Cheap bed bug sprays are available ( which can also kill cockroaches ) These can kill adult and smaller bed bugs within hours. The spray will penetrate into the material and remain there for several days. This can also act as a barrier between the bed bug and their next meal.

Bed bug spray prices vary greatly, but you get what you pay for. They all do exactly what it says on the tin, they kill bed bugs. Some sprays are more potent and will last longer. Others, like the non toxic type, are eco friendly, and can be used around children with no side effects.

Bed Bug Powders

Diatomaceous Earth is a universal company with eco friendly products to get rid of bed bugs and other insects.

Powders work by dehydrating the skin of bed bugs over a period of time, and will begin to kill a bed bug the moment it touches the powder. Powders can be left down for weeks under beds and furniture or in carpets. Using powders and sprays together will increase the death rate of bed bugs and other crawling insects and also begin to eliminate the breeding cycle.

Similar to fleas, bed bugs will take a while to get rid of, they can live for months before they need to feed again.

The natural predators of bed bugs include spiders, ants and even cockroaches. But introducing these insects just to kill off the bed bug infestation does not seem worth it. Bed bugs are hardy creatures, even if professional exterminators are called in, their will still be live young bed bugs lurking around the rooms of a home.

Steam Cleaners

Steam cleaners are excellent for a multitude of uses. They get the smoke and dusky smell from furniture and fabrics, and they also instantly kill bed bugs. The hot steam will stop a bed bug or other insect in their tracks.

Steam cleaning mattresses ( both sides ) will instantly reduce the number of live bed bugs close to the surface of the fabric. It may be sensible to steam fabrics once a week over three months to eradicate the bed bug infestation.

A surefire way to kill all thew bed bugs in a home is a combination of powders, sprays and steam cleaning the soft fabrics in the home, including the carpets. This concoction of attacking methods should eradicate them over a shorter period of time and will allow any new bed bugs which enter the home to face their extinction.
