What is Amethyst?

Amethyst has been used for centuries as the stone to relieve drunkenness and to help people get over addiction. The name amethyst comes from a Greek word meaning, "not intoxicated". It is still used as a symbol of sobriety today.

It has long been used by the Egyptians, Chinese, and Greeks for various purposes. It has also been very popular in England for several centuries and has even been worn by every Pope since the 16th century. Amethyst has long been used as a symbol, like the color purple, to represent royalty and to be adorn on royal attire.

Chemically, the diamond is of the quartz variety with an impure iron compound. The iron gives the gem it's purple coloration. Synthetic amethyst is very common and almost impossible to notice anything different from that of real amethyst. This is why it is always best to purchase gemstones from a reputable dealer.

The Greeks had an explanation for the creation of amethyst within their mythology. Dionysus was chasing a young maiden by the name of Amethystos because she had refused his affection. She prayed to the gods to protect her. Artemis heard her prayers and turned her into a white crystal. When Dionysus found her, he wept tears of wine, which is how Amethyst obtained it's purple coloring. However, there are several variations to this story.

Amethyst Crystal Healing

Amethyst is great for sleep and addiction related issues. Keeping an amethyst stone under your pillow is one of the best gemstone healing techniques to follow when you're just getting started. Not only will it help you sleep better, but it will also help control your addictions, even if the addictions are alcohol, food, drugs, pornography, etc..

If the problem is addiction, it is best to keep amethyst with you at all times. Wear a piece of jewelry with an amethyst stone, or keep an amethyst gemstone in your pocket. This will help you control your addictions and encourage more positive thinking.

Building a healing altar in your home can also help you on the path to recovery. You could erect an altar entirely out of gemstones. These are often called crystal grids. Along with gemstones, you can also include items that help you to focus on your healing. These items can be photos of your family, a picture of the way you looked before your addiction/illness, or any number of things that inspire healing and self-improvement.

Do keep in mind that you have to actively work towards sobriety and healing. Amethyst alone will not cure you. You have to actively work towards self-improvement. Amethyst simply provides a magical means to help aid you in achieving your goal. Along with your gemstone work, be sure to follow a healthy diet and lifestyle to help you in your journey towards healing.

Crystals are merely a means to help enhance a holistic and magical approach to healing. Relying on amethyst alone will not help you get very far in your recovery. Do your own research, consult with your primary health care professional, and focus your intentions onto a path of self-improvement.

Crystal Healer Set Up

The healer will likely be wearing an amethyst necklace. The one in need of healing will usually hold an amethyst piece. An additional amethyst piece will be resting on the body part needed for healing. The healer may also choose to set up a gemstone altar designed with their client in mind.

When healing others with Amethyst, or with any gemstone for that matter, always keep your ego out of the healing process. This will disrupt the healing process and the client will not benefit at all. Also, try to keep your mind and soul centered and balanced. This will help in the healing process. If your mind is filled with ill thoughts or distractions, the healing will not be effective.

How to Make an Amethyst Gemstone Elixir

To make a gemstone elixir from amethyst, you must first clean off the stone. Any impurities, such as dirt, on the stone ruin the healing effect of the elixir. Next, fill up a glass or a bowl with purified water. Place the stone inside the water and let it sit in a window in the sunlight for around 12 hours. This can be used to anoint the body, an altar, or used in sprays for around the house.

Cleansing Magical Crystals

All crystals should be cleansed after a healing session. No crystal should go without a good cleaning after a healing session. There are numerous methods to cleanse crystals and nearly every crystal healer will tell you a different method. The best method is the one that works best for you.

All that being said, here are a few methods for cleansing crystals:

  • Kosher or Sea Salt Method - Those of you who are practicing Pagans are probably familiar with this method. Simply fill up a container with sea salt or kosher salt, cover the stones in the salt, and leave in the salt for around 12 hours. This helps to cleanse the stones of any negative energies and impurities.
  • Intention Method - Simply holding a stone, communing with it, and assisting it in re-tuning itself entirely off of you intention is another method that some crystal practitioners rely on.
  • Sage Method - There are some who lay sprigs of sage with their gemstones in order to help cleanse and re-tune them.
  • Moon Bath Method - Laying your stones out under direct moonlight can help them to recharge for a new healing session.
  • Water Method - This is a pretty simple method that some people dislike, but it works if you don't have access to any of the other methods. Simply run your stones under filtered or natural (well or spring) water for a few minutes. After the water bath, allow the stones to dry in a window under direct sun for a few hours to recharge.

There are numerous other methods for cleansing stones than the ones listed, but the ones that are listed are simple and cost-effective for those just getting started with gemstone magic.

Final Thoughts on Amethyst Healing

As with any form of magic, amethyst healing will only work for you if you actively pursue healing. If your intentions are not there, the gemstone will be able to do very little work for you. Keep your thoughts and intentions focused on the healing that you desire, and amethyst will be able to assist you thoroughly and efficiently.
