Health and Medical Benefits of Olive Oil

Updated on October 12, 2012

Which Olive Oil is Right for You?

There are various types of olive oil and you will know how each has been processed by looking at the label. The first pressing of olives is an unprocessed, unrefined product that results in pure virgin oil. Typically, this is labelled as 'virgin,' or 'extra virgin.' On the other hand, a mix of refined and virgin oil and unrefined oil is labelled as 'pure olive oil.' Although both are beneficial, it is better for health and taste to use virgin oil.

A monounsaturated fat, olive oil contains easier to digest nutrients than other fats that are monounsaturated. Through the absorption ease of the minerals and vitamins of olive oil and its many antioxidants, there are many benefits to health. Select extra virgin olive oil when selecting the type of olive oil you plan to use for benefits of health. This is because extra virgin olive oil provides the most nutrients and vitamins compared to all the other olive oil varieties.

Since ancient times, olive oil has been utilized for providing sun protection and improving complexion. These days, many regimens of skin care use olive oil including as a night cream, moisturizer and bath oil. Since it has properties that are antioxidant, virgin olive oil can also be applied after sun exposure to prevent skin damage.

Get a Healthy Digestive Process

Olive oil helps alkalize food that leaves the stomach and at the same time contains cycloartenol, squalene and magnesium, which helps in decreasing stomach acidity.

Properties that are Anti-Aging

Containing both vitamins A and E, olive oil decreases the breakdown of fatty acids in the body. For this reason, wrinkled skin and other signs of aging are decreased. Olive Oil also provides fatty acids that are essential and this prevents bone calcium loss in adults and in children promotes bone growth.

The Ability to Fight Cancer

There are antioxidants in olive oil which help fight against cells that are cancerous. As a matter of fact, in some cases, olive oil has destroyed cancer cells when combined with other therapies.

Arthritis and Asthma Help

The monounsaturated fat of olive oil is used by your body to produce agents that are anti-inflammatory which can assist in lessening the severity of arthritis and asthma.

Helps with Diabetes

Blood sugar levels are controlled by olive oil and for this reason your body is able to maintain healthy levels of sugar when you have diabetes or show some signs of it.

Heart Disease Protection

LDL cholesterol is lowered by olive oil and HDL cholesterol levels are increased. Heart disease is thus prevented with higher HDL levels.

Benefits in Cooking

Since there is more versatility and great flavour than other types of oil, pure virgin oil is able to enhance the taste of vinaigrettes, dressings and salads. It is great brushed on meat, fish and vegetables and is great drizzled on crusty bread. On the other hand, virgin olive oil has a smoke point that is lower than other types of oil and is not recommended for frying. With pure virgin olive oil, you get taste without your taste buds becoming overpowered.

Olive oil is one of the best oils. I recently learned that vegetable oil has hydrogen added to it which could creat tran fats if I understood that correctly. However, olive oil is definatley healthier for you and I plan on using it every day.
