Strawberry is a fruit with characteristic aroma, bright red color, juicy texture and sweetness. It can be consumed in both fresh form or in prepared foods. Strawberry is used in the preparation of food like pies, ice creams, milkshakes, and chocolates. Strawberry has many health benefits, and some of them are discussed below.
- 1. Strawberry has antioxidant properties.
Body contains some forms of free radicals that cause oxidative damage to lipids, protein and nucleic acid, this invariably leads to development of degenerative conditions. Presence of antioxidants in the body prevents this damage and therefore any foods that can supply antioxidants to the body are important. Strawberry contain fisetin—an antioxidant that has been studied in relation to Alzheimer’s disease and kidney fauilure resulting from diabetes. Strawberry is also an excellent source of flavonoids.

This vitamin is a water soluble vitamin and it helps the body in the management of cold. Also vitamin C boosts the body immunity and scavenges harmful free radicals. The body requires the presence of vitamin C during the synthesis of collagen in the body. Collagen represents the main structural protein present in human body and it is required in maintenance of structural integrity of skin, organs, bones and blood vessels. This makes vitamin C essential in the protection of the human body from scurvy. Straw berry is an excellent source of vitamin C.

Amino acids are very important during cellular growth. Growing children need these essential amino acids for their growth and consuming strawberries is an effective means of ensuring that these children have what they need for their development. It is advisable for nursing mother to ensure that their children eat strawberries in the early parts of their lives, although care must be taken because of some reported cases of allergy to it. Strawberry contains amino acids liketryptophan, threonine, isoleucine, methionine, cystine, phenylalanine, lysine tyrosine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, glycine, proline, serine and valine.

Some compounds like manganese and copper present in strawberry make this fruit very important in the maintenance of healthy bones.
- 5. Strawberry can be used to improve the health condition of teeth and gum.
When strawberry is cut into half and rubbed on the teeth and gum, it removes tartar from the teeth and strengthens and heals the gums. The juice should be allowed to remain on the teeth as long as possible in order to dissolve the tartar. The mouth may then be rinsed with warm water.
