Healthy, Wealthy and Wise

Updated on August 28, 2009

Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad!

I am a 45 year old woman, in the prime of my life if you believe the news media. The older I get, particularly since the mid 30’s, the more health issues I have. Some of the issues are genetic, most are self inflicted. I want the second half of my life to be a long, happy, healthy one. This means I need to start taking better care of myself, my body, to make this a reality.

What’s better than a public proclamation? I’m currently working a public 100 day business commitment, so now it’s time for my personal one.

I need to lose 30 pounds. No, I’m not going to divulge my starting weight. Just suffice to say that there will be a whole lot less of me. If I go the healthy route, I should be approximately 20 pounds less by the time my 100 day business venture is completed.

How am I going to accomplish this? I will focus on healthy lifestyle activities: rest, exercise and proper eating habits:

  • I will get better rest at night by using my CPAP mask.
  • I will make time for family and friends because everyone needs down time.
  • I will do yoga and 20 minutes of physical activity every day.
  • I will walk 10,000 steps a day.
  • I will eat better by following my personal checklist plan: dairy, fruits, vegetables, protein and lots of water.

OK – that’s it. Pretty simple, actually. My commitment is now public. On to implementation.

My Personal Daily Checklist

Day 26

August 28, 2009

Felt better today, ended day with a headache.  Very busy day!

  • Started the day off with yoga.
  • Pizza for was good!
  • 10,000 steps - 6,572 reached. Better!
  • No CPAP mask last night.  I'm getting bad about falling asleep before putting it on.

Day 25

August 27, 2009

Heard from Dr.'s office about CT Scan. Deviated septum, not sure if this is causing problems. Next stop, ENT.

  • Tired this morning, and did not exercise. Rained late afternoon/evening, so no walk. I guess everyone needs a day off once in a while.
  • Ate OK.
  • 10,000 steps - 5,853 reached.
  • CPAP mask last on all night.

Day 24

August 26, 2009

Didn't hear anything back from yesterday's CT Scan for tomorrow. Headache started coming back.

  • Started the day off with yoga.
  • Evening walk with hubby and the dogs.
  • Managed to eat ok, with one slip - custard yogurt while working in 100% weather.
  • 10,000 steps - 7,731 reached. Better!
  • CPAP mask on all night!

Day 23

August 25, 2009

Had the CT Scan today. Technician said I should hear something in a day or two.  Had an incredibly busy with meetings ending around 10 pm.

  • Started the day off with yoga.
  • Ate well.
  • 10,000 steps - 5,525 reached. In spite of being busy and feeling like I was running around, didn't actually walk that much.
  • CPAP mask not used.  I was so tired I fell asleep without it.

Day 22

August 24, 2009

OK - scheduled my CT Scan for tomorrow. Stayed on plan fairly well today inspite of not feeling well.

  • Started the day off with yoga.
  • Evening walk with hubby and the dogs.
  • Managed to eat ok, didn't fall into old habits.
  • 10,000 steps - 10,567 reached. Whoo-hoo!
  • CPAP mask cleaned and ready for use tonight.

Days 20 - 21

August 22 - 23, 2009

Time to follow Dr.'s suggestion and get a CT Scan. My headaches come back strong usually within a week once I am off my prescription. My weight is going back in the right direction, only because I'm not eating much due to the headaches.

Starting to feel better and will start my day off right tomorrow with yoga. My body actually misses it!

Days 13 - 19

August 15 - 21, 2009

Wow. My week in Nashville completely got me off my program, despite my good intentions. My last two days in Nashville completely got away from me. No planned exercise, and my meal choices got progressively worse.

I drove back home from Nashville on 8/17. Plenty of sugar on the road to keep me going. I spent the next 2 days resting up, and the following 2 days fighting a headache.

OK - got off my program. Time to regroup and get right back on. It's not if you will fall off your plan, it's when. What's important is how long it takes you to get back on track once you fall off.

Day 12

August 14, 2009

Keeping up your regimen as a road warrior is challenging. Good breakfast. 1/2 a burger and a few onion rings for lunch. Dinner was a salad and flatbread pizza. No CPAP, no pedometer, no planned exercise. I'll do better tomorrow.

Day 11

August 13, 2009

Keeping up your regimen as a road warrior is challenging. Good breakfast. Gourmet Mac N Cheese for lunch...yum! 2 vegetable fajitas for dinner. OK, and 2 fruit punch type cocktails.

  • Morning yoga
  • CPAP mask stayed on all night!
  • 10,000 steps - 10,804 reached!

Day 10

August 12, 2009

Keeping up your regimen as a road warrior is challenging.  Did a little better with food today.  Good breakfast, 1/2 egg salad sandwich for lunch.  OK, I did have a couple of onion rings.  Sour cream and chives baked potato for dinner.

  • Morning yoga.
  • CPAP mask stayed on all night!
  • 10,000 steps - 12,053 reached!  Gaylord Opryland is one huge place!

Day 9

August 11, 2009

Keeping up your regimen as a road warrior is challenging. Between meetings, teaching classes and everything else my work entails, fast food becomes too easy of an option. Old habits calling. I did well with breakfast. Lunch, well, pizza, only one slice. Dinner, well, Macaroni Grill. And somehow a glass of wine. Sigh...

The day started off well. Stuck to exercise program.

  • Morning yoga and pilates.
  • CPAP mask stayed on all night!
  • 10,000 steps - 8,460 reached. I need to add an extra lap around the hotel to make sure I hit my goal tomorrow.

Day 8

August 10, 2009

Starting up week 2. Wow. I know I stated that losing weight was secondary to feeling better. However...I would really like to see some downward movement on the scale! I am feeling better overall and my clothes are fitting better. These are victories!

Today was an abbreviated day due to travel to a workshop I'm working in Nashville. My food intake was horrible. Fast food that almost makes me ill. My body is getting used to fruits and veggies, and oily burgers and fries aren't sitting well. I suppose that's a good thing.

  • Morning yoga.
  • CPAP mask stayed on all night!
  • 10,000 steps - 8,396 reached. Most of it trying to find my room at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel in Nashville.

Day 7

August 9, 2009

Feeling better! Headache going away. I let work get the better of me today. Need to remember to first do workout, then open up my laptop. I did get out and walked quite a bit today and ate well. Although I did have 3 homemade quesadillas. Should have stopped at 2, but they were so good!

  • Evening walk with hubby and dogs.
  • CPAP mask stayed on 3 hours last night! OK, baby steps.
  • 10,000 steps - 9,684 reached. Whoo-hoo! Maybe I should jog around the house real quick to hit my mark! Nah...

Day 6

August 8, 2009

My headache is a bit better - not 100% yet. Got up early and went to Dr.'s this morning before road trip Monday.  Doing this completly through off my day.  Got a stronger prescription and set up an appointment for a CT scan when I get back from Nashville.

While I ate OK today, no planned exercise and I forgot my pedometer.  And I was aching last night, so I took the CPAP mask off after only about an hour.  My bad. Back on track tomorrow for sure!

Day 5

August 7, 2009

My headache is a bit better - not 100% yet. May be going to Dr.'s tomorrow before road trip.

  • I started the morning with yoga and some cardio, then took the dogs for a walk.
  • Evening walk with hubby and dogs.
  • Stuck to diet plan fairly well. My body is just not used to fruits and veggies instead of chips and dip. I should have more steps just based on bathroom trips.
  • No CPAP mask last night! I feel asleep and Bob just let me be. Tonight it's back on.
  • 10,000 steps - 7,497 reached.

Day 4

August 6, 2009

Well, my two day headache turned into a full blown migrain today. I definately fell off the wagon.

  • Started the day off with yoga and pilates. Headache set in, and that was about it.
  • Managed to eat ok, didn't fall into old habits.
  • CPAP mask on all night last night!
  • 10,000 steps - 3,912 reached. I'll do better tomorrow.

Day 3

August 5, 2009

Once again I woke up with a headache and it stayed with me most of the day. I was correct - storms moved in early evening.

  • I started the morning with yoga, then took the dogs for a walk. Tough to get motivated when your head hurts.
  • Had 3 small multi-grain blueberry muffins for breakfast. I baked some muffins for my friends birthday, and couldn't let these 3 go to waste! Did ok food wise the rest of the day.
  • Ding-donged-ditched a friend for her birthday. Got up early and baked an assortment of muffins, then took them over along with a 12 pack of Dr Pepper with a gift bow and left them on her porch. Fun stuff! OK, silly stuff.
  • Used my netti pot to help with head/sinus pain.
  • No evening walk with hubby and dogs due to weather.
  • CPAP mask on all night last night! Whoo-hoo! Need about a week before I start feeling its positive results.
  • 10,000 steps - 6,306 reached. Did a good job pacing when on the phone. I didn't do my cardio today and my evening walk. Tomorrow is another day and a new opportunity to succeed!

Day 2

August 4, 2009

Well, my journey continues. I woke up with a headache and it stayed with me most of the day.

  • I started the morning with yoga and some cardio, then took the dogs for a walk.
  • Did an OK job eating healthy.  Normally I would grab something sweet for my headache.  I stuck with rice for lunch.
  • Evening walk with hubby and dogs.
  • CPAP mask out and ready for use.  I woke up without it on this morning, so at some point during the night I managed to take it off and don't even remember!
  • 10,000 steps - better today:  8,657 and needs more improvement.

Day 1

August 3, 2009

Well, my journey to a healthier me started today.

  • I started the morning with yoga and pilates, then took the dogs for a walk.
  • Spent time online with friends and family, and planning for a friends upcoming birthday.
  • Did a decent job eating healthy. Broke down this afternoon and grabbed a handful or two of Goldfish....darn.
  • Been drinking plenty of water. Numerous trips to the bathroom demonstrate this.
  • Evening walk with hubby and dogs.
  • CPAP mask out and ready for use.
  • 10,000 steps - well, this is a work in progress. I hit 6,329 today. I probably need to get up and pace while on the phone. I spend way too much time sitting.

Well, I'm pleased with today's results, if not a bit sore from activity. And tomorrow is another day.

One way to reach your goal faster is to eliminate dairy, take calcium supplements and use almond milk instead of cow milk if you just have to have milk. Dairy has way too much fat, almond's have calcium too.

Thanks Sandra. I already drink non-fat dairy milk. I've never tried almond milk. I'll give it a try!
