The Importance of Healthy School Snacks and Lunches

Our children spend about 9 hours a day at school studying and learning. Their recess consist of a small break between classes and a larger break for their lunches so that they can eat and continue on with more energy. Now, many schools provide a large menu of snacks and meals for the kids to choose from or maybe have a schedule in which they prepare the meals systematically to enforce a good diet.

The thing about these meals is that most of them are not really healthy or cooked for that matter. The laws and regulations have changed considerably throughout the years to much questioning and encouragement of the parents that wanted healthier foods available to their kids. This, however, does not make all of it great. That is why making the lunches yourself is a much better idea.

There are many different meals you could make for your kids which are very easy and at times really fun to try. The mission is to keep a good budget and attempt to maintain diversity in the food and what you prepare since you do not want to saturate your children with the same thing day after day. You also want them to receive the proper amount of nutrients so they can have a balanced diet and grow well. The things you should keep in mind are:

  • Vegetables
  • Meats
  • Minerals
  • Vitamins
  • Dairy
  • Wheat's
  • Fruits
  • Beans
  • Eggs
  • Nuts

As there are so many categories to choose from and many diverse ways to cook, prepare and unite them, you and your kids should be able to enjoy a wonderful variety with dishes being cycled through a schedule. You do not have to necessarily do all this with a schedule and just make dishes the best way you can but always try to get all the things mentioned before in there every now and then.

Snacks: What to Eat

Giving your children money every now and then is not a bad idea. They could buy something in an emergency or a treat if they think they deserve it. Attempt to make them understand that the foods and snacks in the machines are not the best thing for them. If you maintain a steady supply of delicious refreshments for them to have, they will not have to buy from the machines and could learn to save money from a young age. Some of the best snacks that you can prepare are:

  • Fruit salad: Kids love a variety of small pieces of food for their snacks and fruits are filled with the vitamins they need. The energy boost will be amazing and they stay healthy! Fruits that kids love are generally watermelon, peach, strawberries, apples and bananas. A good mix of those is bound to make them keep coming for more, especially if accompanied by juice.
  • Sweet Potatoes: Absolutely delicious and easy to prepare, these are great for making on the go and accompanying anything else. You can dice, slice and bake these potatoes to your taste. It is also great to get some yogurt with it, maybe even dip them as fries. Try different things with these since you will find new ways to make them all the time.

  • Homemade muffins: A snack that takes more time to prepare but is divine and a kid favorite, muffins are really good when you know how much sugar you are using and you can always throw fruit into the mix whenever you want.
  • Carrot sticks: These go with great dips and are easy to make. Peel them, make them look like tiny, delicious sticks and tell them Bugs Bunny would die for them. These are especially tasty if sided with peanut butter, honey or even at time jelly. You could let your kids decide that one. You can also switch out the carrots with apples any day.
  • Ham and Cheese: These go with almost everything. Crackers, fruits, homemade potato chips are all great things to put next to some slices of ham and a couple small blocks of cheese.

Those are just some examples of the many things you could try out. There are always new and exciting ways to make small snacks like these so I encourage you to pursue them and try everything to see what suits you and your family best.

Now, let's talk about lunches. Most of us think that giving them school lunch money or money in general will aid them to solve out whatever thing they need when we could in fact be producing a problem.

Schools that are close to fast food chain restaurants are at the biggest risk of having obese children because it is much easier and cheaper to order something from there than to eat the school meals. That is why controlled amounts of money and thorough preparation of the lunches they eat is an important one.

Diversity is key, even more when your children are growing into teenagers or are soon to be young adults. They grow tired of the same food and want different things every day. That is why it is sometimes hard to prepare things they like, are willing to eat and are healthy for them. The lesson to be followed is that they must eat what is in front of them and realize the nourishment they get out of it. They might think burgers and pizzas are delicious, which in truth they are, but the nutrients found in them are minimal to the ones you could provide.

The real task after convincing your kids to eat what you prepare is actually preparing it. That is why schedules and turns should be important. Try incorporating them in preparing the meals too so that they know all the time and effort that goes into it and can make these dishes themselves when they grow older.

We cannot let our kids grow to be a generation of bad cooks and obese workers. We need them to be able to realize the importance of real nutrition and how to obtain it. Getting food might be easy in the long run but the benefits are really non-existent. We need to make sure they try to have a balanced diet and exercise regime and aid them in doing that while they are growing.
