Help Fund Homeopathy Documentary Movie by Laurel Chiten Award Winning Film Producer

Updated on March 27, 2015

Trailer For The Movie That Need Your Dime

Years In The Making

This documentary has taken Laurel Chiten many years to collect the film, sort, edit and hopefully get completed this year with your help. She's asking for a few dollars. Instead of purchasing a cup of coffee, you can make a donation and get this off the drawing board into the movie theaters. I'm very excited to see how this will shatter preconceived notions.

It is not hard to imagine why patients in the 1800’s may have welcomed an alternative to blood-letting and mercury. But modern medicine has come a long way since then. The invention of antibiotics, development of insulin, and surgery, surely has saved many lives, and we now have numerous medical interventions to help with a variety of medical problems. But with, or in spite of, these medical advances, we also have myriad chronic diseases for which modern medicine has few cures. These include heart & respiratory disease, arthritis, autism, fibromyalgia, allergies, & depression, as well as “super bugs” and other hard-to treat conditions. And let’s face it, we still don’t even have a cure for the common cold.

On top of having few cures, modern medicine frequently causes more harm than good. Millions of people have adverse drug reactions to prescribed medicine – it is ranked as the third leading causes of death. In the US, health-care spending reached $1.6 trillion in 2003. Considering this enormous expenditure, we should have the best medicine in the world. But we don’t.

Bottom line, people are suffering. The public is calling out for a reform in mainstream medicine. More specifically, anyone who has a chronic illness, mothers with young children, and those with elderly parents -- all of whom are often prescribed numerous pharmaceuticals – will be interested in seeing this film.

Help Fund A Movie That Will Rock The Medical Model

"It takes courage to push yourself to places that you have never been before, to test your limits, to break through barriers. ~ Anais Nin

Fortune would have it that Laurel Chiten [pronounced with a long 'i'] contacted me December 2010 when she was about a year into making a film about homeopathy. At that time, a simple blog post and a link on the Homeopathy World Community website sufficed, with a donation to appease the guilty conscience.

From time to time, I would hear some news, or revisit the teaser on autism and homeopathy. The working title of the film was, "From Within Without" – which was a double entendre. Referencing Herrings Law, of healing from the inside to the outside, paralleled with the healing process of a person with autism, to go from their inner world to the outer world.

The further she researched, the more she realized that the subject needed to broaden. She decided to make a more general film about homeopathy, The film now focuses on the most pervasive modern disorders in the United States including autism, addiction, depression, Parkinson’s, MRSA, and more. In developing countries, it tackles epidemics, and other acute and chronic illnesses. Homeopathic successes challenge conventional medical notions of what is and isn't possible.

We are currently in a health care crisis, not just in the United States but around the world. Daily, we witness the cycle of human suffering from crisis and destruction, to hopelessness and depression. These global epidemics create despair in today’s socio-economic world for many communities and individuals. Homeopathy is an inexpensive and effective alternative. Homeopathic medicine can provide a break in this cycle and offer a ray of hope.

Having made five other educational films, spanning over 30 years, she has a lot of experience with distribution and large-scale plans for this film when completed. Her major goal is to have it shown on national, and international television. Beyond broadcasting, this film will have enormous potential for educational distributions – medical schools, nursing schools, clinics, etc and also home video and on-line streaming.

The Korns - Autism and Homeopathy

Film Production Is A Labor Of Love

"A goal is a dream - With a deadline." ~ Napoleon Hill

The banner splashed across the HWC website brought a bit of attention and a few contributions. Given the controversial subject matter of homeopathy coupled with our present financial climate, fundraising from her normal avenues (PBS, etc) has been a challenge so she has been relying on grassroots efforts – donations from those who have, as she says, “Been touched by Homeopathy” in any way, including professionals, students, and patients.

Laurel's vision was clear. For now, fundraise enough money to keep going, shoot a few more interviews, put together a sample reel, do more research, and continue to write more proposals will further the development to reach the end goal.

Regarding Homeopathic Treatments and Remedies

. . . if they were shown to be repeatable "they would bring into question the entire physical nature of the universe as we know it. ~ Julian Winston, homeopath

Always having eureka moments, her enthusiasm for telling narrative stories and helping people heal within, without - oh gosh! - I think I really got the idea this time. Yes. She wants people to heal both on the inside and the outside. When we feel good inside, we really do look healthy on the outside.

Laurel's Personal Story

"You can gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face...You must do the thing which you think you cannot do!" ~ Eleanor Roosevelt

Laurel didn't start out making award-winning films. Her humble beginnings as a sign language interpreter sensitized her to the needs of others. Her own personal hardship dealing with an unexplained neurological disorder got in the way of her work as an interpreter. Eventually, diagnosed with Tourrette's Syndrome, then realizing the dearth of public information available, inspiration hit! Instead of interpreting and speaking for others, she would find her own voice in the making of films and documenting the stories of others through her art.

The Making Of A Film

With her dramatic arts and theater background, and bold determination, she produced "Twitch and Shout" in 5 years time. The documentary won many awards and was nationally broadcast on PBS’s POV, and was nominated for a national Emmy award. Suddenly, the word was out and people learned about Tourette's Syndrome. Even today the film plays to a sold-out crowds in the Big Apple at MOMA. The New Yorker Review

Forte As An Expert Communicator

Laurel’s motto is "Educate while entertaining." Using her talents in conceptual thinking, composition and fitting all the elements into a complete story, people would be captivated watching the movie and simultaneously learn about this disease and even make it a call to action. Many other film-makers would follow once she broke the ice. Someone always needs to lead the way and open the door to innovation.

Stand Back, She's Not Afraid of Contention

Not held back from talking out in the open about controversial subjects, Laurel dares to be different and challenges the status quo. For her own disease, she sought out every avenue and ended up meeting Dr Luc De Schepper. He was the inspiration behind this film.

Healing Laurel With Homeopathy

Dr Luc provided the connection to the Korn family, who had had recorded home-video from pre-autism through the diagnosis of their son's illness. Over time the movie expanded beyond autism to a film about homeopathy in general. Who knows how the film will change over the next year? If we all contribute, she will have the ability to keep going.

Gathering Scenes From The Field In Haiti

Laurel traveled to Haiti after the earthquake to document the "Homeopaths Without Borders" physicians working with the people. Homeopathy has incredible healing remedies for physical, mental and emotional trauma and shock. She met Dr Robin Murphy and many other impressive, caring, giving members of the team.

Do People Really Understand Homeopathy?

The Jew In The Lotus Took Laurel To India

The Jew In The Lotus Movie

Laurel Chiten's award winning movie The Jew in the Lotus is based on the Kamenetz book and was first aired on PBS's National Show Independent Lens in 1999. It has been shown around the world and won the filmmaker an outstanding personal vision award from the New England Film Festival among other honors and accolades.

Touched Preview

It Was All In God's Plan

Touched offers a uniquely contemplative perspective on the alien abduction phenomenon [and] presents the 'experiencers' and their stories with sensitivity and without judgement.” —Boston's Weekly Dig

Serendipity, Providence or Just Plain Luck

Laurel says she was groomed to make this film about homeopathy, she kept meeting people who moved her further along this path.

Harvard psychiatrist John Mack, a leading researcher in the alien encounter phenomenon, approached her after seeing her other well received film, "The Jew in the Lotus." Once involved, she must have 'fallen in love' again. The nature of each film requires on location scenes in different parts of the world and into the alien inner worlds where people live. Taking over three years to produce Laurel shot film in the U.S., the U.K., Italy and Brazil. Again, a subject about people being abducted by aliens was not easily accepted by the movie industry or even the medical community. As a result of her courageous spirit, the finished film, medical schools and universities use the film as an educational resource. [Past showings]

You could say they broke the glass ceiling into another realm. Can you imagine if Laurel finished this homeopathic film and again produced a startlingly revolutionary film that awakened the medical industry? With our help, she can continue production onward to completion.

Just as homeopathy changes your world, makes you question your own view of the universe and your personal delusions and fears, so too, Laurel faced many similar inner world's when capturing the narratives of the characters in "Touched."

The difference between the alien occurrences and the homeopathic experience is that each of us can gain a personal understanding of how homeopathy heals. We do not have to wait for any extra-terrestrial to visit us. Based upon the fundamental laws of nature, Samuel Hahnemann, explains in his Organon of Medicine what we can expect. Homeopathy is the ultimate scientific experiment.

Maybe the thread winding its way through all of the Chiten films is the search for truth, woven through the personal stories of individual people and the mysteries of life. When we approach these unsolved mysteries we keep bumping into walls, closed doors, and prejudice.

With her personal background and the unusual production about people who were abducted by aliens, she knows what it is like to have to fight against the odds. Making a film of this caliber requires backers, lots of motivational support, a team and funding. Two years into it and now all other films have groomed. Two about medical conditions and another about people who was abducted by aliens. “Touched offers a uniquely contemplative perspective on the alien abduction phenomenon A few years ago,

Harvard Medical School Takes The Plunge

When a prestigious university, like Harvard ushers in a new perspective on healing others will follow. Fortunately, Laurel's films have all been shown there and we hope the trend will continue to change old mindsets and bring in the new.

Why are people prejudice about homeopathy?

Laurel keeps asking herself why people are so afraid, prejudice and dead set against homeopathy? I wonder whether this film will be able to answer the complexity of that question because it is one each person struggles with on a personal level.

Hahnemann's Organon

In Hahnemann's Organon aphorism §141 it explains the clinical trial or proving best,

But the best provings of the pure effects of simple medicines in altering the human health, and of the artificial diseases and symptoms they are capable of developing in the healthy individual, are those which the healthy, unprejudiced and sensitive PHYSICIAN INSTITUTES ON HIMSELF with all the caution and care here enjoined. He knows with the greatest certainty the things he has experienced in his own person.

[Footnote 103] Those trials made by the physician on himself have for him other and inestimable advantages. In the first place, the great truth that the medicinal virtue of all drugs, whereon depends their curative power, lies in the changes of health he has him-self undergone from the medicines he has proved, and the morbid states he has himself experienced from them, becomes for him an incontrovertible fact.

Again, by such noteworthy observations on himself he will be brought to understand his own sensations, his mode of thinking and his disposition (the foundation of all true wisdom), and he will be also trained to be, what every physician ought to be, a good observer.

All our observations on others are not nearly so interesting as those made on ourselves. The observer of others must always dread lest the experimenter did not feel exactly what he said, or lest he did not describe his sensations with the most appropriate expressions. He must always remain in doubt whether he has not been deceived, at least to some extent. These obstacles to the knowledge of the truth, which can never be thoroughly surmounted in our investigations of the artificial morbid symptoms that occur in others from the ingestion of medicines, cease entirely when we make the trials on ourselves.

He who makes these trials on himself knows for certain what he has felt, and each trial is a new inducement for him to investigate the powers of other medicines. He thus becomes more and more practiced in the art of observing, of such importance to the physician, by continuing to observe himself, the one on whom he can most rely and who will never deceive him; and this he will do all the more zealously as these experiments on himself promise to give him a reliable knowledge of the true value and significance of the instruments of cure that are still to a great degree unknown to our art.

Let it not be imagined that such slight indispositions caused by taking medicines for the purpose of proving them can be in the main injurious to the health. Experience shows on the contrary, that the organism of the prover becomes, by these frequent attacks on his health, all the more expert in repelling all external influences inimical to his frame and all artificial and natural morbific noxious agents, and becomes more hardened to resist everything of an injurious character, by means of these moderate experiments on his own person with medicines. His health becomes more unalterable; he becomes more robust, as all experience shows.

Integrating The History of Homeopathy Into The Film

Using her expert documentary techniques, Laurel will provide a historical reference to introduce homeopathy to the general public. An animated allegory will illustrate  Samuel Hahnemann, as the founder of homeopathy in the 1800’s. first “a-ha” moment while translating a medical text from English to German. Just as written in the aphorism above, he experimented on himself and went on to develop the “Law of Similars.” Homeopathy is much more than a material remedy, this form of medicine is based upon certain principle or laws of nature that touch upon the dynamic quality within each living organism. Substances that cause healthy people to get symptoms can cure diseases that have similar symptoms. This became the foundation of homeopathy.

  • Animation by Max Rubin, a film student who had autism as a young boy, and was treated with homeopathy. Max is now “neuro-normal” and is the son of Amy Lansky who wrote the book "Impossible Cure".

Adding A Bit of History

What Goes Into Making An Award-Winning Film?

Twenty-Five Years of Film-Making Experience

Energy, motivation and funding waxes and wanes like the moon. To produce a film independently takes between $500,000 to one million dollars that includes transportation, sound crew, film makers, producer, editors. Like a scientific laboratory researcher, a film maker may work for years editing a film after recording hundreds of hours of film and reducing it down to one hour of viewing time.

She Needs You To Give Now If You Can

Laurel has been working solo all these years and requires your input. Both in words of appreciation, donations, personal connections, and even your homeopathic healing stories. She waits for your call or email and will respond to you personally. Mail her your video and she will review it as a potential clip in the film.

Dramatic Cures That Have Been Well Documented

A well executed film requires a scientific foundation and evidence that homeopathy works. One segment of the film follows Marc a friend and film-maker who recovered from a case of MRSA. After his experience with homeopathy, Marc has become an assistant editor and co-producer. The small crew consists of a film editor and a sound person on location. The film is coming together and needs that extra last push.

Help Reach These Mini-Goals

Each leg of the journey requires thousands of dollars and an incredible investment of time. With $63,000 raised so far we ask each person to reach into their pocket. It will be the gift that keeps giving. She will not give up on the film and we must not give up on her. We believe in homeopathy and she believes we are waiting for her. She simply won't let down all those who have trusted her up until this point of production.

In Her Words

"While my former films Twitch and Shout, The Jew in the Lotus, Twisted, and Touched helped raise awareness and changed attitudes, this film will not only educate, but could potentially save lives. In our present health care crisis homeopathy provides an inexpensive alternative that people need to know about. And for all of you who might be skeptical about homeopathy, I ask you to believe in me as a filmmaker, and believe in the importance of telling a true story, even if it challenges conventional medicine notions of what is and isn't possible. Homeopathy was invented over 200 years ago, and it is still being practiced all over the world. Isn't that something worth looking at?"

Let's Get On Nova

My Vision and My Dream

"NOVA is the highest rated science series on television and the most watched documentary series on public television. It is also one of television's most acclaimed series, having won every major television award, most of them many times over.

NOVA producers believe that science is neither sacred lore nor secret ritual, but rather curious people exploring interesting questions. NOVA's approach, developed over more than a quarter century, is to select a topic of great interest to viewers and then produce a film that is as entertaining as it is informative, using the tools of good pacing, clear writing, and crisp editing. Equally important, NOVA shows the human story behind the science story. Whether exploring a galaxy or an atom, the series delves into the personalities responsible for the discoveries, and the social consequences of events in the lab.

I am envisioning that their six million U.S. viewers each week will have an interest in learning more about homeopathy. Then, the film will go viral and spread across the globe.

What Is Laurel's Vision?

  • To illustrate homeopathy's rich history
  • To pave the way for others to follow
  • To open the door to prejudice
  • To tell narrative stories of real people
  • To help save lives

How Can You Help?

  • Provide hotel, and other travel expenses
  • Send in your home video documentaries of cures
  • Put her up in India
  • Visit her website

How People Will Use This Film

  • To educate people in local health food stores
  • To show and discuss in study groups
  • To teach at medical schools and universities
  • To entertain in movie theaters, home film libraries, coffee shops
  • To provide this video as an introduction to patients first learning about homeopathy
  • To help gather momentum for more people to learn about homeopathy
  • To dispel myths surrounding homeopathy
  • To possibly start a series of television shows or films
  • Many more options

Hello Dear Ian ~ When we get a chance to meet people who have been treated by homeopathy successfully, we learn the incredible potential of this form of medicine. Our body gives us signs and signals to uncover the matching remedy. If only we can unravel the code and provide it in the correct potency and repetition, we can observe a miraculous change. Hugs to you, Debby

A fascinating hub Debby. It opened my eyes to the Tourette Syndrome so clearly. I hadn't even realised that the "old fashioned" facial tic was just part of the "problem". if only homeopathy could cure something as irritating and debilitating as that. I noted the reference to dopamines... I'm fascinated, what a useful hub.
