Herbs for Men’s Sexual Health

Updated on March 12, 2011

Prescription medications for treating erectile dysfunction are expensive and often include many potentially dangerous side effects. Many times, the symptoms of erectile dysfunction can be alleviated simply by making dietary changes or incorporating exercise into a daily routine. Dietary supplements like vitamins and herbs serve as home remedies and natural methods for treating erectile dysfunction, enlarged prostate, and other sexual health problems in men without the added cost and unnecessary side effects. These herbal home remedies have been used for thousands of years and can also serve to improve other physiological functions and aspects of physical health as well.

One of the most beneficial supplements for men’s sexual health is L-Arginine. Although it is not an herb, L-Arginine is a naturally occurring amino acid that can be found in many foods. It has been touted by some as being a “natural Viagra.” L-Arginine works by providing the necessary resources that the body needs to create nitric oxide. Nitric oxide is essential to smooth muscle relaxation and improving blood flow and circulation throughout all parts of the body. For this reason, it can also improve blood flow to the penis, resulting in firmer, longer-lasting erections.

Gingko is a home remedy that has proven to be of great benefit to people who experience sexual dysfunction as the result of anti-depressants or other types of medications. Many prescription medications are notorious for sexual side effects that can lead to erectile dysfunction in men or decreased libido. Anti-depressants are among these types of medications. A supplement of Gingko taken daily can help to alleviate these sexual side effects.

Asian Ginseng has also been used traditionally as a home remedy to treat erectile dysfunction in men for many centuries. This herb can also be used to improve circulation, and is beneficial for a number of heart-related conditions as well. Although no studies have been performed to confirm the claims of many traditional medicinal practitioners regarding the use of Ginseng, it has been found to be beneficial for many people. Damiana is an herb that has also been used for many years to treat impaired sexual functioning in both men and women. It is a natural aphrodisiac that can be used to increase arousal and treat decreased libido.

Yohimbe is a natural herb that was used for many years to treat erectile dysfunction and decreased sexual functioning in both men and women. However, it is no longer used and is not recommended due to the substance’s potential for toxicity and dangerous side effects. Ashwagandha, sometimes referred to as Indian Ginseng, may be a viable alternative to Yohimbe and also Asian Ginseng. Ashwagandha also works as a natural aphrodisiac and one of the most effective home remedies for increasing energy levels. However, it should not be used in combination with other types of Ginseng or sedating drugs and herbs. Ashwagandha has been known to cause drowsiness in some people.
