Herpes - Cold sores, genital or zona can all be helped with essential oils.
Herpes is a cold sore caused by the virus herpes simplex 1 which many of us carry around without symptoms. The blisters can occur when we catch something else, a cold for instance (hence cold sores), but it is because we are exhausted & run down and excess sunshine. The virus is activated by Arginine an amino acid, this is inhibited by another amino acid Lysine which helps suppress the virus. Foods which are high in arginine and should be avoided are chocolate, nuts and the majority of cereals. Foods which are high in lysine and should be eaten are dairy products, potatoes and brewers yeast. It would help to take lysine supplement (1gram three times a day) as well. Health food stores sell it as L-lysine.
Melissa (Lemon Balm) is known to help herpes blisters heal more quickly and prevent future flare-ups. In clinical trials of 58 sufferers 24 made a complete recovery using Melissa within 5 days.
Zinc which improves the immune system has been shown to help with Herpes also. You should include the following in your diet - seafood, eggs, liver, turkey, pumpkin and sunflower seeds. Take care with total intake of zinc, if you are likely to exceed 30mg per day you need to balance it with 2mg of copper. (Note: if you or your patient suffers from Alzheimer's you should not take zinc as it is under review)
Homeopathic remedies: If you get cold sores in the sun then take Natrum mur 30c, however if the outbreak starts with a sharp prickling pain and it cracks and bleeds then take Nitric acid 30c.
Essential oils: To treat the blisters use Ti-tree, Bergamot or Eucalyptus essential oil at the first sign and unusually instead of a carrier oil use alcohol. Normally you would use Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) which you can usually buy at the chemist but if not possible then vodka will work just as well (just don’t drink it !!) Use a total of 6 drops of one or more essential oils to 5ml of alcohol (you can usually get a plastic 5ml spoon free from the chemist). Dab the blend frequently on the blister and alternate with neat Lavender oil which will help the healing.
Genital Herpes is caused by the virus Herpes Simplex 11 virus which may be a different virus to above but appearing in a different way. Use the same essential oil blend as above but with the emphasis on Bergamot. Here you should make up an alcohol dilution with 4 drops of Bergamot and 2 drops of Ti-tree mixed with a litre of boiled cooled water and used as a local wash. If blister break out use the same essential oils/alcohol blend applied with a cotton bud. The best anti-viral skin cream is a combination of St John's Wort, Melissa and Chamomile. This is available from Revital at www.revital.com
Olive Leaf Extract works very well as a tea (2 teaspoons dry leaf in 150ml boiling water and drink 3 or 4 cups each day.
Coriolus Versicolor is a medicinal mushroom from Asia mostly used for cervical cancer but now showing great success in genital herpes and warts. It works by triggering the bodies immune system to kill the human papilloma virus
Herpes Zona is caused by the same virus as chicken pox which may flare up years after an attack of shingles. The blisters can be very painful and may be felt before they appear. Even after the blisters have disappeared the pain may persist for weeks and even months causing fatigue and general malaise. If the area of pain and blisters is small then Bergamot and Ti-tree can be applied neat using a soft paintbrush. If the area is large then use a blend of essential oils and alcohol or add the same to a bath. Where the pain lasts after the blisters have gone Lavender and Camomile essential oils can be alternated with Bergamot and Lavender or Eucalyptus.
A very potent antidote to cold sores is St John's Wort, it has strong antiviral properties and in addition is useful for mild/moderate depression.
The immune system can be boosted with Astragalus which is a Chinese herb able to stimulate the anti-viral immune system protein called interferon produced by the white blood cells. It is taken at the dose of 500mg per day.
Children can take elderberry (Sambucol). There is a flavoured version called Sambucol for Kids.
If the virus develops into a cold sore then grapefruit seed extract (Citricidal) has strong antibacterial and antiviral properties and can be dabbed onto the sore. In addition putting Vaseline onto the sore will stop it reoccurring on that site.
I give this for information only - there are reports of a supplement called Elagen (Eleutherococcus senticous) which was introduced as a cancer cure. After a court case the manufacturer withdrew the claim but it was never disputed that it was an effective immune enhancer and would prevent cold sores.
