Proteins are the most abundant macromolecules in the cell, and they carry out most of the work in a cell. Protection of the body from infection ,mechanical strength, and catalysis of metabolic reactions- all are functions of protein that are essential to life.

Essential amino acids must be acquired in the diet ; non essential amino acids can be synthesized by the body.Complete proteins contain all essential and non essential amino acids.

Protein digestion begins in the stomach, where protein are digested by the enzyme pepsin.Further digestion occurs in the small intestine by enzymes such as trypsin and chymotrypsin.

Protein deficiency cause severe under nourishment- Kwashiorker is a serious condition mostly resulted in children.
