Meaning Of Holistic Therapies

What is the meaning of Holistic Therapies?

By Holistic Therapies I mean all alternative therapies other than modern western remedies. These include Indian Ayurveda, Homeopathy, Greek and Home Remedies.

Being an Indian by birth I have a fairly good understanding as to what Ayurveda is all about. Ayurveda is an ancient treatise on Natural Remedies based on Plants and Herbs. The knowledge base of Ayurveda was a result of accumulated knowledge derived from experiences of the effects of the consumption or use of herbs over a long period of time.

Homeopathy is based on the use of minerals and chemicals for the treatment of diseases either in powder or tablet form.

Greek or Unani as it is called in India is very similar to Ayurveda because in the ancient past there was lot of exchange of information due to the intermingling of Indian and Greek cultures.

Home remedies consist of the use of spices, herbs and essential oils for healing purposes. This knowledge is also traditionally acquired and handed down from parents to children. Generally an Indian is aware of various home remedies without receiving any formal education in this regard.

Faith Healing is another form of Alternative Therapy. Faith Healing is generally neglected and not accepted by the modern people as they do not find any rational logic in it. However modern research has given due importance to Faith Healing and it is now accepted by the well informed that Faith acts as a catalyst in healing if it is administered along with proper medication.

Psychosomatic illnesses are known to be healed entirely by Faith Healing even without the aid of any medication. These include Stress related ailments like ulcers, neck pain and insomnia.

In this article let us address some of the practical Alternative or Holistic Therapies.

Psychosomatic Healing

The word Psychosomatic is a compound word derived from Psyche and Soma. Psyche meaning the mind, and Soma meaning Body or material being.

All illnesses are caused by disturbances in the functioning of the body. These disturbances are caused by both external and internal things. External things that cause illness may be pollution, bacteria or viruses. Some external causes may also be situations of anger or some negative emotions caused by external situations. These too disturb the proper functioning of the body by disturbing the various enzymes produced by the body.

Our mind plays a very big role in causing as well as healing of Psychosomatic illnesses. When our mind gets disturbed and produces negative emotions due to various external or internal causes, what happens is that most of the mental energy is engaged in such negative emotions and the proper functioning of the body is disturbed. A mentally disturbed persons organs do not function efficiently. Hence toxins are accumulated in the blood which cause illness. Moreover negative emotions of anger, fear and hatred tend to actually produce toxins which are released into the blood stream, which in turn cause serious ailments like ulcer, headache and neck pain.

Psychosomatic Healing aims at normalizing the functioning of the mind by ridding it of negative emotions.

A Psychosomatic Healer induces the patient to forgive his enemies and opponents. Thus what happens is that the mind relaxes, and ultimately the functioning of the body is normalized. Enhanced Faith also helps healing because when a person is induced to believe that he will be healed, the brain creates situations which lead the body to produce the requisite situations for healing.

Faith in a Supernatural Benevolent Power and a positive mental attitude is known to induce miraculous healing.

Thus to conclude, I would say it is better to forgive others and oneself, be happy and have a positive outlook towards life so that the best things in life start happening.

Herbal Remedies Like Ayurveda

Herbs, Fruits and other natural products are known to contain healing properties.

The whole logic behind the existence of such healing properties in herbs is that God, or Divinity or whatever you call it, has kept withing the reach of man the remedies for any ailment he may find himself in.

Tropical forests of India and Brazil are flush with such medicinal herbs. The tribes and natives of these countries traditionally use various herbs for healing ailments. In India, Turmeric, Country Sugar or Brown Sugar, Licorice, Ginger, Cloves, Black Pepper Pods and various spices are used as medications for healing illnesses. These are termed as home remedies.

Ayurveda is a more studied and researched method of healing than home remedies. The most commonly used Ayurvedic herbs are Ashvagandha, Trifala, Brahmi and Shalaki for various ailments.

Ayurvedic or other Herbal Remedies normally do not have any side effects. However the healing takes much longer compared to contemporary medication.

Yoga and Transcendental Meditation

Yoga is more of a healthy way of life than a healing therapy.

Regular practice of some yoga as per time available to one can actually result in good health. This is because Yoga regulates the functioning of the organs by regulating the breathing process. Most of the Yoga practices include rhythmic breathing. As breathing is connected with the functioning of the heart and almost all other organs, rhythmic breathing induces a balanced rhythm in the functioning of the organs. This balanced functioning of the organs induces good health and feeling of wellness.

Transcendental Meditation is a very high form of Yoga. Here the pose of the body is not important. All that is required is that the practitioner of Transcendental Meditation should put himself in a state of complete relaxation by detaching himself from all sounds, movements and feelings of awareness of the surroundings. This can be done anywhere or in any situation by a well trained person. However a novice may be able to achieve some sort of Transcendental Meditation by sitting in a closed room away from noise and disturbance.

The best way to do Transcendental Meditation is to sit in a comfortable position, close both ears with the thumb, close the eyes, relax the mind and imagine oneself to be floating alone in the sky among the stars. One can imagine other comfortable scenarios like sitting in a flower garden etcetera.

Yoga and Transcendental Meditation go a long way towards healing the mind and in turn healing the body.

Balanced Nutrition

Food is normally understood to give nutrition to the body.

The effects of food on the mind is generally neglected. Indians traditionally like vegetarian food. Vegetarian foods are not very rich in proteins but do provide lot of vitamins. A balanced diet consisting of both non-vegetarian foods like meat, fish, eggs along with green vegetables and salads should give us a balanced nutrition.

Fish and Chicken is preferred to red meats because these contain less of cholesterol and easily digestible proteins.

Certain vegetables are great sources of proteins, minerals and vitamins. Spirulina Algae and Moringa Pods and leaves are two such foods which are termed as Super Foods due to the high concentration of nutrients and minerals in them. Dry Fruits like Almonds, Apricots and Brazil Nuts contain nutrition as well as minerals required by our body.

Fish is rich in Omega-3, which helps control and reduce bad cholesterol and keep body weight under check.

To sum it all, a balanced diet consisting of Fish, White Meat, Pulses, Vegetables and Fruits should be enough to attain a high level of health and well being.
