Homeopathic Remedy Formica Rufa Relieves Itching and Rheumatic Arthritis Stiffness

As we learn more about our world, from the tiniest insect to the furthest planet’s gravitational pull, we find that everything has a meaning, purpose and even a part in healing our ills. We have much to learn from the colonies of ants that cover the planet.

Based upon observation, people throughout time have discovered particular properties of plants, minerals and animals. When we see how these substances and beings interact in their environment and with each other we can learn how they can impact us.

How Ants Communicate With Each Other?

Ants Share Pathogens for Immunity

A new study shows that grooming by ants promotes colony-wide resistance to fungal infections by transferring small amounts of pathogen to nestmates.

A well selected homeopathic remedy by a professional who knows when the person’s “totality of symptoms” match the energy of the substance is utilizing a true homeopathic approach. It is the recognition of the ‘strange, rare, and peculiar’ symptoms of the case that support the selection of the substance for cure. The information presented in this hubpage is derived from journals, articles and books.

There are numerous homeopathic remedies that address each illness, disease or disorder. Success comes with knowing how to manage the appropriate remedy in the appropriate dose and regularity.

Since ants have been in the news lately, it should not surprise us that there are modern day explorers who are discovering new species, just as they discover new stars and new microscopic organisms. With the media coverage of this tiny insect community comes interest and, for me, delving into my homeopathic studies.

I have learned that the best results occur when both Chronic Arthritis exists in the same individual as an Acute Flare-up of Gout. At these times the homeopathic remedy from ants will relieve discomfort. In addition, when both Rheumatic Pains and Itchy Skin exist then we may turn to the Ant remedy called Formica Rufa.

A number of ants contain and use Formic acid [discovered in 1671] as a protective device that causes predators to stay clear due to the caustic itchy eruptions that occur from contact. Formic acid is also found in stinging nettles and bees. We are all familiar with the burning and irritation when we come in contact with those substances.

Formic Acid Spraying Ants

What gift does the ant have for human kind?

Ants provide relief to three main system stresses when used homeopathically.

  1. Gouty inflammation with the sensations of ants crawling on skin.
  2. Chronic arthritis.
  3. Rash or red itchy skin eruptions.
  • A Seattle post intelligencer article said more than 250,000 rheumatism sufferers had been successfully treated by using ant remedies.

Recommended Dosage for home care:

  • The mother tincture preparation of live insect has been given in 1-5 drop dosages and also in potency 6X
  • A derivative of Ant, Formic acid taken in a 6x or 12X every six days has been historically recorded as beneficial.
  • A number of homeopaths have taken Formic acid as a dietary supplement.
  • Use self observation and judgment to relieve pains and prevent reoccurrence.

More About Ants

Ants come from the animal kingdom, in the phylum arthropoda in the class of insect order Hymenoptera and the Family Formicarieae. The subfamily is formicinae and the homeopathic remedy of ant is the genus Formica species rufa.

Found mostly in pine forests they are also called Southern Wood Ant or Horse Ant. They have large mandibles and like many other higher ant species can administer formic acid from their abdomens as a defence mechanism. Formic acid was first extracted in 1671 by the English naturalist John Ray by distilling a large number of crushed southern wood ants.

Formica rufa ants have been used in pest management to eat aphids, since that is a large part of their diet. However, they also aggressively remove other ant populations to protect their territory. Fierce battles can often be spotted during the springtime. And these ants can also establish nests using the mechanism of temporary social parasitism, when the queens start new colonies by sneaking into host nests and replacing the resident queens.

Homeopaths potentize [dilute and succuss] toxic substances in order to utilize them as healing agents. Formic acid (or formate) has been found to be more toxic than other fatty acids, due to its enzyme-inhibiting activity, although no cumulative toxic effects are known. (Bleyer, 1933).

Invasive ant species introduced into new environments from other countries can pose risks to public health and to native ecosystems. For example, a new sharp stinging species of Needle Ants have spread throughout the Carolinas and range from Georgia to New York.

Materia Medica

The homeopath William Boericke, M.D. has written extensively about the effects of red ant in the Materia Medica in relation to joints, rheumatism, gout, chronic nephritis [kidney inflammation], the tendency to develop nasal polyps, red skin with urticaria [hives], profuse perspiration which does not relieve, and even mental and emotional disturbances.

Contemporary scientists have also found crushed ants works well in arthritic conditions. Formic rufa is also a great remedy for itching and crawling sensations upon the skin. Red fire ant, made from Crushed Live Ants, can be purchased from homeopathic pharmacies as Formica rufa or Myrmexine.

Disrupting The Environmental Ecosystem

Every time man has a brilliant idea and undertakes a project to introduce a new species to an area, they must take into consideration the complex network of balance developed over thousands of years. Species found their own niche and live in harmony with surrounding species, plants and contribute to the mineralization and nourishment of that particular environment. By introducing a new untested element, mankind disrupts the fine balance creating havoc in its wake.

SPRINGER | Imported "Rasberry crazy ants" displace imported fire ants, reduces and homogenizes grassland ant and arthropod assemblages. The scientific name for these ants are Nylanderia fulva. They are also called "Rasberry crazy ants" and “Tawny crazy ants".

  • N. fulva almost completely eliminates regionally distributed species, but leaves globally distributed species largely unaffected, thereby systematically favoring introduced over native diversity. S. invicta impacts wildlife and arthropod assemblage structure and is nearly ubiquitous in non-forested habitats of the Southeastern United States and Texas. Its displacement by N. fulva has critical implications for the natural systems of this region.

History, Facts and More About Formica rufa and Formic Acid

Formic Acid: Formic acid has been given intravenously to address symptoms such as in chronic myalgia – muscle pain and soreness, as in fibromyalgia, gout and rheumatism, which appear suddenly. Pains usually worse on right side, motion and better from pressure and failing vision. Increases muscular strength and resistance to fatigue. Helps one feel stronger and better able to walk. Distinct diuretic effect with elimination of urea. Tremors. Tuberculosis, chronic nephritis and carcinoma, lupus, etc.

Dr. J. H. Clarke [1909] administered it for varicose veins, polyps, nasal catarrh and also for muscle pain in head, neck, chest and shoulders that appeared before a snowstorm as a dilution with distilled water taken by tablespoon once or twice daily.

PLANTS CONTAINING FORMIC ACID: rhus toxicondron, dulcamara, urtica urens, juniper and wood alcohol. When drinks are made of these plants and there is convertion into formic acid, effects of death or blindness may occur.

Dr. Sylwestrowicz of the Hering Research Laboratory of Hahnemann college, Philadelphia had given formic acid for many illnesses, especially arthritis where deformity had not already set in and saw improvement in ligament and joint flexibility. He gave in low potency 12X and 30X, intravenously every 2-4 weeks and watched for the body’s response – often called an aggravation.

There are recorded stories where upon giving a homeopathic remedy caused the cessation of progressive arthritis, but only infrequently reversal of deformity.

Further Investigation of The Effectiveness of Homeopathic Formica rufa in Combination with Autologous Blood on Ankylosing Spondylitis (Bechterew's Disease) must be done.

Treating Gout: Not only has Homeopathy been effective treating acute attacks of gout by reducing frequency and intensity, but with repeated use as a constitutional therapy over time can improve the person’s total health when correctly suited to the individual based upon homeopathic principles.

Other remedies used in conjunction with formica rufa include: Bryonia, colchicum, ledum pal, formica rufa, rhus tox, calcarea phos, benzoic acid and urtica urens.

Kidney Detox Drainage Remedy: Formica rufa and/or formica acid is used to stimulate kidney function, remove toxins, and improve metabolism.

Other Kidney detox remedies include:

  • Apis Mellifica: Scanty urine, burning and soreness when urination.
  • Berberis Vulgaris: Pain in the kidney region, burning pain when urination.
  • Chimaphila Umbellata: Urinary disorders. Prostate enlargement.
  • Cuprum Metallicum: Scanty urine.
  • Equisetum Hyemale: Pain in the kidney region, specially right. Constant desire to urinate.

Dr. Clarke experimented upon himself by taking formica acid daily based upon his observation of tropical plants, animals and insects. He relates that all insect and fruit eating animals, such as bears are known, at certain season, to eat large quantities of red ants, which they hunt for on decayed branches of trees, and in effect, alter their tissues, which make their flesh practically worthless for eating purposes. And we all know that bears love honey and that bees also contain formic acid! Wow!

He observed that when taken for long periods it had the effect of thinning the blood of the tropical animals, and also lowered the temperature of the body.

He personally took much citric acid for his childhood illness and found it relieved him of suffering. As a side note, many today take vinegar on a regular basis for health reasons. Natural vinegars also contain small amounts of tartaric and citric acids.

Eat Your Fruits: Clarke noted that Formic acid in its crude state is an irritant poison. He reported that people who took daily fruits, honey and lime juice will be reasonably certain of getting the required amount of formic acid for good health. He found 2 grams daily was too much for regular use and 1 gram in the form of honey, raw sugar cane juice would suffice and said it had a pleasant, "fruity" sort of taste. Sometimes he added a little citric acid and sugar to it to improve the effect.

Commercial Production: We know today that Formic acid that is naturally present in ants can be found in many fruits such as apples, strawberries and raspberries, plus honey and nettles and is commercially produced from sulphuric acid, sodium hydroxide and carbon monoxide.

Protection Against Insect Bites: Clarke believed those living in tropical areas eating foods with formic acid protected against malaria, as mosquitoes would be reluctant to bite from the smell. He also thought is was protection against cancers.

Formic Acid is a Preservative: And as Clarke explained that wild animals feast upon foods in order to use the protective qualities of formic acid, today we use it as a preservative against many micro-organisms. However, due to its smell, use is limited.

Formic acid Flavorings :Formic acid is used as strawberry, apple, apricot, banana, cherry, peach, plum, nut and walnut flavorings in the manufacture of foods and beverages and as a colorless synthetic flavoring agent, with a plum-like odor, particularly for sweets, bakery products, and ice cream, ices, candy, baked goods, and chewing gum. Formic acid occurs naturally in apples.

Side effects : It is metabolized by the liver and excreted. High concentrations are diuretic. No side effect at the acceptable concentrations specified. Locally allergic reactions may occur at high concentrations (such as ant bites and contact with nettles)

Indications in Tuberculosis: In the Homeopathic World of April, 1902, Dr. Dudgeon gave an account of the work of Dr. Edward Krull, of Güstrow, who was led to think of Formic acid as a remedy from its constant occurrence in the internal organs and soft parts of the body. He found it constantly present in the sweat of healthy persons, but very much diminished in or entirely absent from the sweat of persons affected with tuberculosis. For two years he experimented in giving injections of the homeopathic solution with great success, depending upon the stage, for persons ill with tuberculosis, chronic nephritis, lupus, wasting disease and malignant tumors.

"The general effects which were observed in all the cases treated by Krull's method were : Immediate increase of nutrition, the appetite improved, the weight increased ; all this without any material change in the diet. In all the patients during the first months, sometimes every two or three days, sometimes at an interval of weeks, there occurred slight transient attacks of pain in the abdomen, on the right and left of the umbilicus, sometimes accompanied by urging to stool. If several copious fecal evacuations occurred, this had no bad effect on the patient, they seemed to have a critical character. After the injection the menses came on earlier and were more copious ; all diseased organs and parts showed greater activity."

Dudgeon concluded, "Tuberculosis, chronic nephritis and carcinoma are not diseases in which we can claim a great amount of success. . . . So where other remedies fail or cannot be discovered we may take Solomon's advice and –“Go to the ant!”

Dr. L. B. Couch wrote in the Homeopathic World, Sept., 1906 about the nature of acute or chronic rheumatism :

  • is due to self-generated systematic poison
  • is not bacterial
  • is chemical
  • is an acid and a suboxidant product
  • is not uric acid
  • uric acid is a product, not the cause of rheumatic conditions
  • is produced by starchy indigestion alone
  • is produced by fermentation
  • is produced by carbonic acid gas generated in the bowels and is due to drinking at meals and washing the food into the stomach without proper mastication and mixing with the proper ferments designed to digest such foods

Dr. Couch studied Formic acid in the treatment of rheumatic disorders after hearing of a farmer who was cured after being stung by bees. Well known today as Apitherapy - Bee Venom Therapy (BVT) is the therapeutic application of honeybee venom, through live bee stings, to bring relief and healing for various spinal, neural, joint, or musculo-skeletal ailments.

It is so amazing how all this information comes together. He recommended eating honey and now we see bee sting therapy and its relation to formic acid.

Instructions for the injection method: Based upon Dr. Couch’s method in imitating natural bee stings he found the less he gave the better results, which reiterates the homeopathic principle of “less is more – the minimum dose”:

  • Always cleanse the parts thoroughly before injecting formic acid solution.
  • Never use a stronger solution than 3 per cent. ; a 2 1/2 per cent. is better.
  • Never use it without using 5 to 8 drops of a 1 per cent solution of a local anesthetic, as a preliminary.
  • Always choose exterior or outer parts for exhibiting the remedy and inject it just beneath the skin.
  • Never use more than 8 drops in any place of either cocaine solution or formic acid solution.
  • If larger doses of formic acid are used, painful lumps are formed which are slow of absorption and painful ; whereas if smaller doses are used no destruction of tissue results.

Dr. Couch "makes the injections not less than 2 inches apart and he has never used more than thirty injections at a time(!), and it is far better to use only twelve and repeat the following day in another place. Injections may be given every day or every other day, till all the pain has ceased."

Formic Acid in the Garden: There have been notes indicating that formic acid enhanced flower growth, just as we see ants naturally crawling on our dahlias and other bulb plants.

Dear Clementina ~ Like humans, pets require the unique remedy that matches their set of symptoms. It could be the fundamental 'sulphur' or a nosode, 'psorinum,' which is like a cold sulphur. But, with hundreds of commonly used remedies for itchy pets, you will need to speak to a homeopathic vet.

I finished a series with Dr Christina Chambreau on BlogTalkRadio, where people could call in to ask their questions. All of the shows are archived on the Homeopathy World Community website. Just click her photo on the main page to see the list of audio files.

Remember to keep a journal, so you have all the details about how often, location on the body, what makes it better or worse, description of skin and hair, concomitant symptoms, pet personality, relationships with others, seasonal issues, discharges, vaccinations (a big issue) and other injuries, illnesses and potential initiating causes for the problem. Good luck, Debby

Dear Christine ~ You have added valuable information about your personal tribulations through painful symptoms. I would be interested in learning the results of your investigations and trial. Finding an expert homeopath, who can relate your totality of symptoms to one or more homeopathic remedies may be a wise choice if formic acid and formica rufa do not relieve your pain. With thousands of energy remedies from which to choose, there are those that target parasites in the body, as well. A homeopath can also guide you toward the proper frequency and potency of these drugs. In health, Debby

Thank you for this great research Debby. It has been helpful beyond measure! After 30yrs of flareups of reactive arthritis, gastric problems, sinus, rashes, bursitis, stabbing pains in tissue, tickling sensations.. I recently discovered cutaneous parasites (likely dwarf tape worm or a nematode). While most doctors deny the possibility of such a thing, there is plenty of medical research to support the condition and they have found associations with ALL of my conditions. The medical treatment (a highly toxic drug with many dangerous side effects) includes formic acid & a sulphoxide. I found my way here researching those ingredients, suddenly it all makes sense!! I shall be commencing Formica Rufa, taken together with MSM powder (containing bioavailable suplhuroxide). Thank you again!!

Dear Courtnee ~ I don't know if you'll be back to get the answer, or if you surfed just a bit more to find out from "Top 5 Natural Ant Bites Treatments" that "Vegetables and fruits are a great natural remedy for treating ant bites. For example, you can pour lemon juice directly onto an ant bite. The acidity from the lemon counteracts and neutralizes the acid in the bite. A slice of cucumber on the bite is also helpful, as well as a little bit of onion or a clove or garlic."

Another application of the basic homeopathy principle of "likes cures likes." In this case, an alkaline substance was not used to neutralize the sting. Good luck with your homework.

Precis: She showed early symptoms (after a few weeks) of food intolerances, which showed up in terrible stomach pain, crankiness, unsettled, and she never had 'normal' stools. She was 100% breastfed, yet her 'poo' was literally acidic. On a few occasions, she passed a bowel motion as I was changing her nappy, and she was essentially passing dark green/black mostly frothy liquid that literally left a burn mark on her skin as it tricked down her bare bottom. Poor little mite. I went on an elimination diet, and discovered she was sensitive to gluten and dairy - which I cut out whilst she was breast fed (exclusively until approx 10 months). By this stage, she was moved onto a mainly vegan diet. We travelled overseas for quite a few months, around the time she was 12 months. On returning, she vomited after eating a serve of scramled eggs... she'd previously eaten egg before, with no problems we'd noticed. We put her vomiting down to tiredness, excitedness, being unsettled on the long (15hr) plain flights home... Keeping in mind her intolerances, I never fed her peanuts, and kept her mostly away from eggs (although, she would occasionally eat cake, or foods with cooked egg as an ingredient, with no issues). She did, however, regularly eat other nuts. Her favourites were cashews, walnuts, almonds and pistachios. We would often nibble on them together, so I know she had no reaction to these. Fast forward a few years. She was approx 2 1/2 yrs old when she was stung by an Australian Bull Ant (often known as a jumper ant). Her reaction was quite bad, but no anaphylactic. I was also stung by the same ant, after my daughter, and the pain and sensation of the 'sting' was present with me for many weeks afterwards (stung on the mid section of my quadricep). Two weeks or so after this event, my daughter had her first 'reaction' to nut. VIOLENT. She touched my mortar and pestle as I was making one of our favourite (indian) desserts. Using pistachios as a base. As soon as she touched the rinsed (but not washed) mortar and pestle, she immediately came up in huge welts on her hands. She tried to wipe the 'feeling' off her hands, and everywhere on her skin where she'd wiped her hands, she came up in very dark red/purple welts and hives. She was screaming in pain, and I had to wash her down, in the bath, with cold water to calm her before I could put an ointment on her. A few weeks later, at Christmas dinner, she put a cashew nut into her mouth, chewed it, then turned to me in horror to tell me it was making her mouth funny. She swallowed it, but nearly immediately vomited and proceeded to have her first anaphylaxis event.

Looking back at the history, it seems clear to me that my daughter has a tendency towards food intolerances - she displays/ed many autism spectrum disorder type symptoms early on. She was never vaccinated. She has been otherwise in good health. Of course, she has eczema associated with foods and local interaction with them. She gets hives adn is 'allergic' to the saliva of my parents in law's dog.

Is it possible that the sting of the bull ant 'tipped the scales' so to speak, and was the catalyst for her developing alaphylactic allergies. And if so, is it possible to have a homeopathic rememdy made from the sting of the particular type of ant, that might help her symptoms, or reverse her anaphylaxis?

Hi Debby - great article. Interesting to see how you stood up to mr. nice. Good for you. Researching at the moment and came across 'ant remedy' ----- pain (like strong contractions) in L. leg around knee at night only, wakes up 3 - 6 times during the night because of pain. Thought it may be blood clots because of previous history, there was a fall 3 months ago. During the day leg feels heavy on walking and pain on bending only slightly. More bending creates severe pain.

Debby, FANTASTIC hub. I'll have to be back for much more. Incidentally, Gelsemiun and Fer Phos are polycrests for my young granddaughter. Perhaps I need to publize how we discovered that-I would not have believed it had I hot helped it happen! Great information in your hubs. Thanks!

Dear Mr. Nice ~ I am attempting to understand the points you are making in this last comment. It says in my profile that I practice homeopathy. Ok. Now you know I am a homeopath.

Second point was speaking about Nat mur for headaches. Which you say does not refer to you, just as an example to demonstrate that we do not give a remedy based upon a stated disease, but only based on matching patterns of symptoms. I agree 100% here.

Third point regarding Hub title. I see that it could be confusing that everyone who has gout does not use ant remedy. The reason I stated this was just to go deeply into talking about Rufus in its healing action for people with symptoms of gout. As you read the article you see that one must have the complete picture of rufus, including all the crawling sensations and inflammation, for it to work. Readers can always contact me if they have a question.

Please explain how Gelsemium and Lachesis match my symptoms? This is an unusual statement.

I have learned in my training never to interpret or guess at what others are feeling or thinking. I listen and believe their truth. So, regarding your William James quote - I never read between the lines. It's more like hearing it from the horses mouth.

      Have a super day, Debby

      Hi Debby!

I believe so you are a homeopath that's why you wrote CHOM. If you read my comment carefully there is no contradiction about your profession. You were curious about my profile & I wrote about your profile, it was just a reference & I mentioned.....

Thanks for becoming my fan, your curiosity about my profile details is true & I will fill in the blanks soon. After reading your fan mail, I also realized & peeked into your profile. I believe everything else was invisible except your profession…….hahaha never mind I don’t care.

Nat mur aggravation was just an example, I don't have headache & was not using Nat mur for this purpose.

Actual discussion was regarding the hub title.....

That was my point too but the main reason of my comment was your hubs title, in homeopathy we cannot specify a remedy to cure a certain disease.

I am still waiting for some feedback since you are CHOM your insight will be helpful in this situation.

Gelsemium & Lachesis closely match your symptoms......hahaha just kidding.

      Don't worry be happy.........

~ As the art of reading (after a certain stage in one's education) is the art of skipping, so the art of being wise is the art of knowing what to overlook.

Mr Nice ~ I am a homeopath. Could you not guess? The initials after my name CHOM are for certificate of homeopathy. Typically an "aggravation" which is the initial response of the organism to a resonanting remedy shows there was a stimulous-response. This is usually a good sign. Perhaps we need to find the correct potency for you such that there is a quicker 'secondary' healing reaction of the immune system. It can also mean that you are VERY close on a healing remedy but not exactly correct with the prescription. Perhaps there is another SALT like nat mur which would work to eliminate headaches completely. It is wonderful for folks to learn more about homeopathy through discussion. Best, Debby, CHOM

      Dear Debby!

Thanks for becoming my fan, your curiosity about my profile details is true & I will fill in the blanks soon. If you have any specific, questions please do not hesitate. After reading your fan mail, I also realized & peaked into your profile. I believe everything else was invisible except your profession……….hahaha never mind I don’t care.

Thanks for your reference to paragraph 4, which explains the basic principle of Homeopathy. That was my point too but the main reason of my comment was your hubs title, however in homeopathy we cannot specify a remedy to cure a certain disease.

I 100% agree with you for the success in homeopathic treatment depends on the selection of right remedy, selection of potency. Same remedy given to several people will have different outcome or reactions. Sensitive people might have the aggression or proving in homeopathic terms. Several homeopathic remedies will cause aggression to some people but not to others.

For example Natrium mur in 3x, 6x even 12x always gives me swear headache but may be for you or someone else no aggression. There are several other remedies & I have personal experience about them. Two cases I mentioned in my pervious comment have very different symptoms & they were treated with two different remedies, Causticum & Rhus Tox. I appreciate for your feedback & I respect for your knowledge & experience.

Dear Mr Nice ~ Thank you for pointing that out and adding more references to research. Please refer to paragraph 4 of this article:

"A well selected homeopathic remedy by a professional who knows when the person’s “totality of symptoms” match the energy of the substance is utilizing a true homeopathic approach. It is the recognition of the ‘strange, rare, and peculiar’ symptoms of the case that support the selection of the substance for cure. The information presented in this hubpage is derived from journals, articles and books.

There are numerous homeopathic remedies that address each illness, disease or disorder. Success comes with knowing how to manage the appropriate remedy in the appropriate dose and regularity."

These references were about the wonderful amazing Ant, its life, defense mechanisms and medicinal properties. I appreciate your feedback and any recommendations. All the best, Debby

      Hi Debby!

Very interesting info but as you know homepathy is not like alopathic medicines that you can give the same antibiotic in all cases. There are several homeopathic remedies for Arthiritis & they are prescribed according to symptoms. I treated two cases with Causticum & Rhus tox...Here is the list of some remedies.....

Ammonium phosphoricum, Bryonia, Causticum, Cimicifuga, Colchicum, Kalmia, Ledum, Phytolacca, Picricum acidum, Pulsatilla, Rhododendron, Rhus toxicodendron, Sanguinaria, Urtica urens
