Homeopathic Remedies for Rhinitis and Sinusitis
In this hub are presented homeopathic remedies, which help for affections of nasal membranes and sinuses on different stages.
In acute cases the nasal catarrh is accompanied by other symptoms like headache, stiffness of muscles of the neck and back, chills all over the body, cough, throat-pit and ear pains; sometimes there are complications which extend to kidneys, bronchi or lungs.
Chronic cases are manifested by constant nose discharge, and also from posterior nares. Some of those cases are on allergic basis; like nose obstruction, discharge and sneezing, caused by pollens in the spring and summer periods. Others are determined by other chronic diseases, as is the frequent inflammation of sinuses as a complication of acute viral infections.
Before I get on the subject, I want to mark that homeopathic treatment is not – contrary to the common belief – a harmless therapy.
It is mild and sparing, highly effective alternative treatment. I often hear people saying that ‘if would not helped, homeopathic remedies would at least not hurt’. Truth is, when something is able to cure, it is most certainly able to hurt; especially when treatment is not held by a professional. For that reason it is important to bear in mind the risk of complications, which may occur when the remedy is ill-chosen. In chronic cases it is strongly advisable to see homeopath, in order to receive adequate treatment.
It is impossible and useless to try to cover all homeopathic remedies in a hub. So bellow you’ll find information about the most often prescribed remedies for acute cold in the head and some of the remedies for sinusitis.
In acute cases, often after a fright, Acon. is very effective remedy. It is fast working remedy in the beginning of the inflammation, and its effect exhausts after two-three hours. It may be taken hence more often until the inflammation subsides.
Everything commences suddenly, fast, unexpected, after exposure of cold dry wind or after the feet was wet in cold water. And another remark: the symptoms will most probably be manifested at night. The patients are anxious on physical and mental level; they feel chilly, temperature rises high, the body burns but not perspire; the skin is dry. It is possible that they‘d have dry painful cough from the throat-pit.
Few dozes of Acon. will cure this ill state entirely in no longer than a day.
Allium cepa & Euphrasia officinalis
These two remedies are often being neglected in treatment of ordinary acute cold cases, started in the head. But they are too effective to be underestimated.
The commonest is All–c. It will help when the nose discharges a fluent, burning secretion, which is worse in warm room and much better in open air. The nostrils are red and painful. Often the eyes also discharge, only the lachrymation is clear and mild (contrary to the nose secretion, which is burning). People sneeze frequent because they feel tickling in the nose. They might also have headache, localized in the forehead.
Key to All-c picture is the feeling of heat and burning in the nose, the discharge of which is so violent that excoriates the upper lip, and in many cases the larynx too.
The Euph. picture is also revealing a profuse nasal discharge, but it is not excoriating and is accompanied by come inflammation of conjunctives. The eyes are congested, people feel worse from light in the eyes (photophobia), and the eyelids are red. The eye discharge is irritating, contrary to the nasal discharge, which is not.
So as you can see, these two remedies are quite easily distinguished from one another. Both are used for cure of hay fever.
Nux-v is applicable to irritable, chilly people, dedicated to their work and inclined to exertion. They just don’t know when to stop. The acute case is with much sneezing presented. It usually occurs in damp, cold weather; the remedy works best when given immediately in the first stages of acute cold in the head.
Nux-v sneezing will sound like volley and will be most intense in the mornings. The entire night the nose will be obstructed and people will be disinclined to uncover. They feel worse in warm room and better at open air, though.
During the day the nose will discharge scantily and will alternately be free and obstructed. Eyes are wet, throat feels scrapped; people feel heaviness and oppression about the frontal sinus. Immediately after these sensations appear, Nux-v is very effective and stops the cold quickly.
When acceptance of Nux-v is delayed and symptoms developed further, it is of little use and you should consider another remedy.
Ars. is deeply acting remedy. It is used both in acute and chronic cases, including for curing of allergic rhinitis.
Mental and emotional picture of those who need Ars. is remarkable and obvious. Very uneasy people, strictly fixed on their symptoms and supposing always the worst that may happen; they will seek advice from at least three doctors before to accept that the condition they have is not bearing signs of some deadly disease. They need to be ascertained in this most of the time, so they are calling their therapist very often, sharing important details about progress of their treatment. They are fastidious and exacting, very anxious about order and hygiene, and able to get angry for trifles – for example when some subject is out of place at their home.
Often they suffer from hey asthma and nose obstruction with watery excoriating discharge in the summer.
The secretion from nose is burning and excoriating nostrils and the upper lip. Patients suffer from intense sneezing from least change in the surrounding temperature, and are very sensitive to cold air or draft.
The treatment of chronic cases is slow and during its course other remedies may be needed.
The acute cold or coryza will start in the nose and will quickly extend to the throat. Mouth is felt dry and patient has strong desire for small sips of water, constantly. People feel worse at night, between 1 and 2 o’clock in the morning. Their body temperature may suddenly raise and meanwhile they would feel anxious and week; the anxiety is ameliorated in company because they fear being alone. Sometimes the cold may be accompanied by diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. All symptoms aggravate at night.
So is called the inflammation of the sinuses, the air-filled cavities in the bones of skull which are lined with mucous membrane. People suffer from it mostly when seasons change, in windy, damp, cold weather. Once sinuses are inflamed and treated allopathically, it is almost certain that they will remain sensitive to inflammations in future.
The inflammation is violent and dangerous. It causes dull headache, pain in the area of sinuses affected and more or less discharge from the nose, which is watery in the acute and purulent in the chronic cases, though in acute cases is also possible the formation of pus in sinuses. The nose is blocked, the eyelids are swollen, and there is possibly a toothache, worse from stooping.
Suppuration in the nasal sinuses may cause an abscess of the upper teeth, which roots project into the cavity. Nasal catarrh may also spread to the mucous lining of the sinuses.
The chronic sinusitis must be treated by qualified homeopath, for it takes time and often more than one remedy. Bellow you’ll find two briefly described remedies, which can help in acute cases.
Symptoms begin after exposure of cold air. The discharge is thick and yellow, and excoriating the nose. Headache is awful, as if nail stuck in the root of nose. Pain is worse from any motion even of the eyes, from head shaking, from bending forward, from the heaviness of the hat. If the head is tightly bandaged over, the pain subsides a little. And still, the scalp is so very sensitive, that even the combing of hair causes additional pain.
Hep. is contradictory remedy; patients are highly irritable. Their anger bursts suddenly; so violent it is that they could stab someone. The remedy may help both in acute and chronic cases.
Kali-bi is one of the most important remedies sinusitis. Characteristic of this remedy is the pain on little spots experienced by the sufferers, usually at the root of nose. Another marked characteristic is the type of discharge – it is thick, resilient, sticky, and cannot be blown out. The mucus adheres to the nose membranes and can be drawn into long strings.
Very often it sticks on the throat, making people to feel as if having a hair at the back wall of the throat, which can’t be removed. The symptoms aggravate from cold, light, noise, walking, bending and at night.
The mental picture of these people is memorable. They suffer from life itself. Feeling tired, disinclined to mental work, disinclined to communicating with other people, they reach state of misanthropy; they are taciturn, ill humored, easily annoyed.
As you may’ve heard, the development of sinusitis is related to irritation, even vexation to the closest members of the family. So you see how the symptoms of this remedy reveal how difficult it is for these people to get rid from things disturbing them. They are experiencing weakness of memory, vanishing thoughts, and sadness after being annoyed.
This remedy is used for treatment of chronic cases. However, when prescribed in low potencies (bellow 30 C), and when all the symptoms are similar to remedial picture of Kali-bi, it brings relief and slowly leads to subsiding of the disease.
