How Color Affects Our Moods and Health and How to Use Color Therapy to Improve Every Aspect of Your Life

Updated on February 9, 2018

Holistic Healing in the Form of Color Therapy or Chromotherapy

Color therapy or chromotherapy is an area of holistic healing used by alternative health practitioners to make changes in moods, emotions and health. Color therapy is classified as a vibrational healing modality. Vibrational medicine is the incorporation of chi energies within living organisms. Sound, sunlight, water, plants, crystals and gemstones are all examples of living organisms which can be incorporated and used in vibrational healing.

There are many different ways to use this form of natural healing to enhance and recondition your life, health, attitude and the health and mood of your family. Color affects mood, health, imagery, perception and even our heart rates! It can be used in the forms of sitting under a lamp which emits different colors of light, pointing a colored light at a particular body part, lamps used to light up an entire room in color, color therapy oils or baths, wearing certain colored clothes, painting specific walls a specific color and/or wearing color therapy glasses.

Color is a form of visible light. It is electromagnetic energy. Color that enters your body, purposely or without recognition, is concentrated into one spectrum.

In chromotherapy or color therapy, the application of light and color in the form of tools, visualization or verbal suggestion are used to balance the energy in areas of our bodies that are lacking physical, emotional, mental or spiritual balance. When color is used, moods and emotions associated with that particular color are enhanced, causing a shift in the self as well as the world around us. This shift has the capacity to make monumental changes in our lives, emotions, moods and health; and even affect our heart rate!

Recently, I have written several Hubs on the ancient art of Feng Shui. A lot of the same associations and uses of color are found in color therapy or chromotherapy. Needless to say, if you have read some of my more recent Hubs, you will quickly see how Feng Shui and chromotherapy combined have the power to quickly, easily and affordably change your life.

How Does Light Have Such an Effect On Us?

How does light affect us? The answer to this question is quite obvious. If we lived in darkness for an extended period of time, we would live; but more than likely not be very healthy. For the most part, people feel better and are much more cheerful on warm, sunny days as opposed to a dark and dreary day. Many people are affected by Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) during the winter months. Studies have shown that working the graveyard shift can be detrimental to your health. We need light to be healthy, much like plants.

Although we cannot see it with the naked eye, the light around us contains the full spectrum of rainbow colors. Each color has its own frequency and vibration, and are related to different parts of the body known as chakras or energy centers.

Some insist that our tissues and organs need the same energies as light. Applying the associated color frequency to a diseased or otherwise inflamed or imbalanced area of the body can restore it back to health. According to Eastern medical practice, we have meridians that carry energy through the body and connect to each organ. This is the theory behind acupuncture which attempts to remove blockages from this energy flow.

Color does the same thing. Each color is associated with different attributes, qualities and vibrational frequencies. Light entering through our eyes triggers the production of hormones that control the biochemical system of our bodies, influencing our emotions, moods and health by supplying the vibrational frequencies we need to maintain balance in our minds and bodies. Rather than healing, light actually enables our bodies to heal themselves.

Color Associations

Different colors have different medical benefits. My very next Hub will cover all color associations for Feng Shui, chromotherapy or color therapy, usage in candle magick and all other practices involving color. The associations are Universal and therefore are quite simple to memorize and put into practice.

Until next time...

Love & Light,

Windy Grace <3

Yes, the colors around us are so much more important than most people realize. However, they effect us rather we realize it or not. Crystals are a great medium, as are lights. Thank you so very much for reading and commenting, newbizmau!

Color is so important! There is so much to learn and gain from experiencing and using color. I do this with crystals. Color is one of the reasons why I became interested in crystals as a child.

Great hub Windy, sorry, I'm just catching up on my hub reading. Right after the Feng Shui hub I went to a friends house and his wife was saying the garage's Feng Shui was off. Cracked me up. I don't remember hearing about the color thing but I guess that's why I always dug those rose color glasses. Peace and love! Tom
