How Does L-Theonine Effect Emotions?

L-theanine is a unique amino acid found mostly in green tea. In numerous studies, it has demonstrated a powerful relaxation effect in humans.

Since ancient times, green tea has been considered to bring relaxation. The substance responsible for a sense of relaxation is L-theaninie, which is the main component adding to the exotic taste of black and green tea. The sweeter the taste is, the more L-theanine the tea contains.

In several recent studies, L-theanine has been found to significantly decrease blood pressure and generate weak electric impulses on the surface of the brain, called brain waves. Such brain waves based on mental conditions are classified into 4 different types: alpha (α), beta (β), delta (δ), and theta (θ).

The more alpha-waves is generated, the more is the index of relaxation.

It has recently been determined that L-theanine is a derivative of glutamic acid, one of brain’s neurotransmitters. Due to its fat solubility, L-theanine gets to the brain via the leucine-preferring transport system of blood brain barrier. Once absorbed, L-theanine demonstrates numerous positive emotional effects.

In a study conducted by Japanese researches, it was determined that after the administration of L-theanine, the concentration of dopamine in the brain, especially in the hypothalamus, striatum,  and hippocampus significantly increased. Dopamine as one of the neurotransmitters in brain, is believed to affect human emotions.

L theanine powder has also demonstrated its ability to increase the levels of GABA in the brain, leading to the feeling of well-being.
