How Dogs bring wellness to Cancer Patients

Updated on November 30, 2011

Puppy Therapy

Hello, I'm Dee and I am a writer, of sorts. I have met a lot of great people on here, many great poets, writers, just fun and sincere folks. If you know me, my Mom has cancer, and she has to have Chemo tomorrow actually. I had a idea that I could bring my little dog Josie Cat to visit my parents. But I haven't really written anything because of this in my family, I took Jo to see Mom and I am jotting a few lines to make myself feel better. So here it goes.First I want to introduce ya'll to someone. JOSIE CAT!

Toy Singing(Josie started howling, she took it from me after that)

The Devil Toy

I waited a full week then took the dogs over there along with this crazy toy. Oh, didn't I mention that thing from hades? One day my husband Tony and I were in a store, I heard this awful music from a toy. I thought O' brother, some child is playing around with that awful thing! As I looking at ink pens my wonderful husband walked up to me carrying this little toy.

"Are YOU the one playing that silly thing?" I said laughing

“I’m going to buy this for Josie" he said smiling And don't let the little innocent looks fool ya.

Over at Mom and Dad’s

But when took it home, and it started singing, she looked like the RCA dog with her head to the side. But she took it and put it in her bed. But over at Mom's it was the funniest thing cause she has two dogs and two cats, and her biggest dog started howling and jumped away from it like it was a Cobra. My Mom and Dad laughed so hard. I thought to myself 'YES!!' My Mom seems to feel better, plus the laughter was priceless. Of course Josie wanted to bully up on their big cat that they have. That was also cute, because Climber the cat couldn't care less about this little dog! I looked at my Mom and she was holding Josie, letting her pet her and there was some conversation I couldn't hear, but all loving, just then a warm beam of bright sunshine shone through the window, they were glowing, with sliver light all around them. It was a moment, that’s all I can say, I thought maybe it was just me, but my husband stopped in his tracks and watched them quietly, I looked at him, and he saw what I saw. My husband’s hand came up and rested on my shoulder. It was only a moment; you can’t keep Jo too still too long. But the smile on my mother’s face right them was everything to me. Josie doesn't know it but it looks like we will be going back soon, making a FEW trips that way.

Thank you, bac2basics, I gave her a new puppy about a month and a half ago. Mean and arnery, but my Mom&Dad thinks that's funny.

It's a pretty rough going with my Mom and everything. Just so she is happy and laughs with ALL their crazy animals, that's all that really matters, the 'quality of Life'.

      Thanks again.

Hi Dee. I am so sorry to hear about your mum, it´s the hardest thing in the world watching someone you love going through so much. I´m glad the little dog brought her happiness. I had to laugh though at the picture of what she did to the toilet roll...oh dear. My German sheppard cross did the same thing with his dog bed..the living room looked like an explosion in a mattress factory when I got up one morning. Voted you up and following, thanks for following me too.

Dee thanks for sharing this hub. My late cat, Otis, used to volunteer at a nursing home. He loved being with the patients and they loved having him. He seemed to have been descended from a long line of pillows, because that's pretty much what he was. Huggable and snuggable. I love Josie Cat and I hope she can work a doggie miracle for your Mom. I was just about down and out from vocal chord cancer in 2004. Here I am seven years later, walking and running two miles a day, and having fun on Hubpages. My prayers are with you and your family.

So sorry your mother has cancer; this must be a difficult time for the entire family. How wonderful that your mother and the dog communed so sweetly. Your family is in my prayers,

Hi Dee-I will be thinking positive thoughts for your mother. I'm a seven year cancer survivor and I can tell you that you bringing Josie over to your parents was so good for your mom. Pets can help so much when were feeling crummy. I brought my dog Joey to radiation once a week. All my friends would stop at the car and get kisses from my dog on their way in and their way out of radiation and I know it helped them all so much. Thanks for sharing your very touching story. I love that you named your dog Josie Cat. I'm guessing Josie acts like a cat? I also got a big chuckle about the dog toy and how you realized it was your husband and not a child playing with it. Too cute!

So sorry to hear about your mom, but it's great that you (and your dog) were able to bring her some laughter. At another time (perhaps another Hub?) you must share how your dog ended up with "cat" in her name! I enjoyed the hub. Voted up!

Yay! Great start, Dee. Thanks so much for getting that first one out there. I rated it up and across, including the funny, despite the fact that your mother is ill with cancer.

I'm sure you, your husband and JosieCat bring her much joy. My mother and husband both had cancer. It is devastating, but their spirits through all of it were amazing!

We can learn alot from those who are afflicted with this disease. God Bless.

Dear Dee42. Iam very sorry to hear about your mother. I admire the way you brought smile on her face. Every day I see cancer patients. Spending some time and talking to them give them the greatest relief. I wrote a hub about my experience with a cancer patient.

It was Dale Carnegie who wrote, "A dog makes its living by giving you nothing but love." This is a nice Hub to families with a loved one going through any kind of illness.

This was very sweet and so true. I have seen other articles and stories on the news where it has been proven that dogs do help people to relieve stress and have a feeling of overall wellness. Just by petting them and having them close to you.

I know this is true because I have a male 13-year-old lhasa Apso named Reno, who I have had since he was six weeks old. I tell people he is the son I never had. It really makes my wife and I feel good and we just seem to be more relaxed and at ease by having him in our life and he is truly a blessing to us.

So lovely. I am so sorry to hear about your Mum. Cancer is horrible, but your little dog is soooo cute and awesome! And what a cool name and I loved the toy. Great hub! Hope your Mum copes O.k. with the chemo. It can make people really ill. Love the bold to, made me want to read!
