All of us know that fruit is a must have in our diet. It has fibers and nutrients that we need in order to maintain a strong and healthy body. It plays an important role in our body’s detoxification. There are people who go on "fruits only" diet for days in order to cleanse the body. It supplies us with energy which enhances the well-being of our body. It is strongly associated with successful weight loss efforts. It is believed to be the cure for cancer, the best secret to great health, beauty and longevity.
What kind of fruits to eat?
With the benefits stated in the above, what kind of fruits are we supposed to eat? Typically all fruits are good in one way or another as different fruits have different nutrients contents and come with different health benefits. For instance, strawberry is one of the fruits that have the highest total antioxidant power among major fruits. It has the power to protect the body from the invasion of free radicals that claims to be the culprit that causes cancer. Other berries share the similar health benefits, some claim to be better. Citrus such as orange will lower cholesterol and protect our body from cold and infection. Vitamin C rich kiwis and oranges also help dissolve kidney stones and reduce the chances of colon cancer. Kiwi also contains plenty of vitamin E, fibers, potassium and magnesium. As the saying goes, an apple a day keeps the doctor away. Although apple is low in Vitamin C, it has antioxidants and flavonoids which assist the Vitamin C at work, reducing the risk of stroke and heart attack.
We are constantly being reminded that whenever possible, consume the whole fresh fruit rather than drinking fruit juice or eating canned fruit as most of the nutrients and fibers are preserved in fresh fruits.However, if you prefer juices over the whole fruit, remember to consume only fresh fruits juices because all canned fruit juice or heated fruit juice has lost most if not all of its vitamins. Try to avoid adding too much sugar into the fruit juices so as not to increase on sugar consumption which potentially become another health hazard.
When to eat fruit?
Well, we used to think that eating fruits only requires a simple 3-steps process that is to buy, cut and eat! However, in actual fact, in order to get the best out of the fresh fruits we consume, there are more that we should know, that is "when to eat?".
I grow up eating fruits after a meal. It has been like that over the past years. Sometimes, I did not have any problems with that, occasionally I burped and had bloating stomach after consumed the fruits. I would never consume fresh fruits on empty stomach, especially in the early morning and late at night. I suffer from constipation from time to time although fruit has been part of my diet over the years. Well, some recent findings have just argued the other way round.
Some claimed that fresh fruits should never be consumed after a meal; instead, it should be taken on an empty stomach in order to get the most nutrients out of it. On the other hand,others suggested consuming it after meal to prevent stomach discomfort, especially for those with weak stomach!
What ever the claim is, the more important is it depends on individuals. Some may find it better before meals while others prefer to take fruits after meals. We should all observe and experiment on ourselves to find out how we feel after the fruits at different time to find the best timing for our fruit eating routine. Regardless it is before or after meals, just remember not to forgo fresh fruits in our diet. Take fresh fruits everyday and make it a habit for a healthy body.
