How I finally stop snoring
I remember to be 10 or 11 and go on vacations with my family. We stayed at my grandmother's house, and I, my 3 brothers and lots of cousins, all slept on the same room.
One of the memories I have is to watch my brothers going to sleep sooner then it was supposed to, because they said it was impossible for them to fall assleep after I was in the room... Their complaint was about my snore...
I also remember to be very embarrassed for waking up with some loud noise and then realised it was me, snoring...
Now, I'm about to get married and I want to give my future wife a good night sleep, and so I started to look for treatments for stop snoring.
What does not work
If you also have problems with snoring, you know that there're lots of possible treatments out here, or at least people say there're... I looked into all off them, or most of them, but I only tried a few.
The others treatments I heard about were:
- devices that counteract the snoring noise
- devices that flash a bright light when you snore
- stop snoring tablets.
- Sports gumshields or mouthguards - these look like mandibular advancement splints, but they will not stop you snoring as they do not provide sufficient support behind the front teeth (particularly the lower teeth) to hold the jaw forward
- Tongue retention devices have been reported as being too uncomfortable
- willpower training
- wrist devices, rings
What does work - Possible treatments
After my research, it seems that only 3 treatments have been proven to work (scientifically), to actually make you stop snoring.
One option, which I discarded, was surgery. I heard about the pain that the recovery from one of this surgeries brings, so I wanted to avoid that to the maximum. Also, a Doctor friend of mine, told me that it wasn't 100% guaranteed that it would make me stop snoring. I would definitely breath better, but the snore could prevailed... And it was to expensive!
The second possible treatment is the Continuos Positive Air Pressure Mask and Air Pump (or CPAP). In this treatment, users wear a face mask and air is pumped into their upper airwayu, providing relief for those who snore heavily. This can only be prescribed by a doctor and is also very expensive. And I bet it isn't very confortable to wear...
And, the third possible treatment is the mandibular advancement device. It's a mouth piece that brings its wearer's jaws forward slightly, creating space between the airways whilst firming up the soft palate.
What saved me
So, how I finally stop snoring? What worked for me?
I had a friend in London that saw an ad to Sleep Pro, a simple mouth-piece to wear when you sleep. As it was very cheap (and they guaranteed that will send my money back if it didn't work for me), I decided to order one. I received it at my home, in Portugal and gave it a try...
It just amazed me! It simply solved my problem! Now I can sleep better and I don't annoy people anymore :)
The Sleep Pro 1, the one I bought, is a mandibular advancement split (the third possible treatment I talked about earlier). It's very easy to wear, after you mold it to your mouth. It can make a little bit confusion to some people, but as I'm used to use the sports mouthguards, it was easy for me to adapt.
Thanks to my friend I saved my precious money and the patient of my future wife :)
