I lost 10 kgs in 8 weeks

Yes this hub is about weight loss. One of the "Evergreen" topics on the net.

No I am not selling any miracle weight loss drug or product. It was all done the old fashioned way.

If you want to know how here's the details. I was about 56 kgs when I got married. Then the next three years saw my husband and me getting comfortable with each other. I gained two kgs each year.

So by the time I got pregnant I was at 62kgs. And now that I was pregnant there was no way to control my diet. I was eating as healthy as possible, but hey gaining weight is expected at this stage.

When I delivered I was 72 kgs. Now everyone said once the baby has you running around after him you'll drop the weight really fast. A couple of years went by I became 75 kgs. Now I decided I was fat.

I mean close to obese fat. My clothes from before pregnancy were still in the trunk I had packed them. I took them out and had a look. There was no way I was fitting into any of these pants or sari blouses. Skirts and shirts have a way of accommodating you.

Eat Well, Just Eat Less

So when I first decided to lose some weight, I knew I was not going to go on a crash diet. I am the kind who likes her food. At first i limited my calorie intake to 1200 calories per day, but now I consume 1800 calories per day. If you want to count your calories you can download a list from the internet. Many sites give you the calorie count of the food you eat.

So I knew I had to eat sensibly and push up the calorie burning. Only I get bored very easily and so I knew variety was the order of the day. That is why I started a list of things that I could do that helped me to burn fat.

1 Cycling

I have always loved cycling even as a child. I got my husband a cycle for Valentine's Day. He never used it and six months later I decided to put it to good use. So every morning after I loaded my kid into his school bus I would go cycling. I usually did between 3 to 5 kms each morning and came home.

2 Pranayam

This is the set of breathing exercises that helps you maintain good health. One particular type of breathing called the Kapal Bharati actually helps you shed weight. It is not at all difficult to practice and any one can do it. If you need more details visit my hub on pranayam. It will help you understand just what I did.

3 Yoga

Simple yoga asanas which helped strengthen my back muscles and burn some fat. I am not a teacher of yoga so I do not remember the exact names of all the asanas, but if you do an art of living course they will teach you all the basic asanas that help exercise your muscles. Some of them are really simple, while others will take some doing.

4 Walking

In the evening I would go for a 5km walk. Initially it would take me more than an hour to cover the distance, but as I got fitter and my stamina increased I got faster. Now I can do it in 45 minutes on a good day. Although I find walking alone very boring and when I walk with a friend the speed tends to suffer.

5 Tummy Tucks and Push Ups

These are simple to do and can be done any time you have a few minutes to spare. I usually do these at least an hour after eating. So as not to affect the digestion.

I also have a habit of watching TV on my tummy and swinging my legs. You really burn calories and don't even notice. A fifteen minute spell is worth ten minutes of walking in terms of calorie loss. Not bad for just watching TV.

On the whole I lost 10 kgs which would be around 20 pounds. I have managed to keep off the weight for almost nine months. So I'm quite sure that the way I went about losing weight was right. I have more stamina, and am not obese. I may never be slim, but I'll settle for pleasantly plump.

      There is no way to know exactly how many steps of yours will equal to a km as everyone has a different stride length. However one useful way to find out how much you have walked is to get onto Google maps and measure the distance of the walking track there. Then you will know just how many kms you have walked with each round of the track and work it out.

      you have mentioned that you use to walk for 5km daily that i equal to how many steps as i have a pedometer which can count the counts of each steps

      coz when I go to a walking track, no km is mentioned and that’s really confusing

      pls help me . I am both mentally and physically disturbed

      Personally I don't think you are fat at all. What is your BMI? 45kgs may be too low for you.

      Hello neha, I think that 15 kgs in two months is a bit over optimistic. Even dropping ten kgs was quite a task for me. The two main points are exercise a lot and eat sensibly.

      I am currently 76 kgs and my birthday is in excatly 40 days , I cant find a dress to fit me because i am huge . i know that they say go to the gym and all that stuff but i have no time i have chores and exams everything just piles up at the end of the day i cant do anything . so pleasee tell me what to do because i have to lose weight in the next 40 days . right now i eat only vegtables but sometimes i cheat and eat a chocolate then regret it .

      Divya, a personal trainer will be able to better advice you on what exercise suits your body type best.

      Kruti, you need to eat. Even lack of food causes your hormones to malfunction. You must eat small portions of healthy foods and exercise regularly to lose weight. lease don't do any crash diets, they are just not healthy. Learn to understand that each item of food you eat has a calorie value. Then add all these values up at the end of the day to get the calorie intake you had for that day.

      Hello Simran, the reason why your clothes have become lose but your weight has not moved on the scales is that you are toning your muscles. Now if you continue to exercise the muscles that you have toned u will eventually use the stored body fat up and make you lose weight as well. At your age I would suggest two different types of exercises or games a day. Maybe anything from swimming, gym, tennis, badminton, or basket ball. Try to play at least two sports a day for an hour.

      Merely walking is not enough, you need to gradually pick up the speed and cover the same distance in less time. Ideally you should be able to walk 5 km in 45 minutes at your peak.

      With a medical problem like thyroid the weight can go up and down like a Yo Yo. It would be a good idea to enlist the help of a good nutritionist and personal fitness trainer if you are really serious about losing 10 kgs. This is because the body with thyroid problems does not react the same way to food and exercise as a normal body will. You need specialized care, so get it.

      It is not necessary to use the gym to lose weight. Walking and yoga exercises combination works just fine. You need to feel the difference in your body as you walk and usually if you can talk clearly with no loss of breath while walking, it means you can go faster :)

Now I am stuck..I still need to lose 7 k.g of weight. Due to some reason, I can't make use of gym and depending on walk and exercise.       k thank you so much then i take a small glass of milk and 2 idlies as breakfast and any curry(only one) with rice i take in my lunch box (small) and again at evening i take a small dinner with curry and curd thats it i will not eat any fastfood or junk food in between and i eat non veg only once in a week can i continue this food or i have to change it to loose weight and which excersices can i do daily plz tell me

      @Nasreen, have never tried them so cant say.

      @ Ashwini You need to write down every thing you eat for a week in a notebook. Then calculate your daily average calorie intake. You can use calorie calculators on the internet to help you. There are a number of free ones. Then work out how many calories you can cut down in the day. While losing weight its best to stick to a diet of 12000 calories a day. In addition to that you need to burn at least 500 calories a day. And 15 minutes is not enough for that. You need to do more exercise to ensure that you burn calories. Cutting down on intake is not enough to lose weight.

      Don't eat anything fried. Avoid fruits like mango, banana, grapes and cheekus as they have high fructose content. That means more sugar for the system. Not needed when you are trying to lose weight. Apples, oranges and papya are excellent fruits to eat.

      @ Aswini, phulkas, rotis, bread are all forms of carbohydrates. It takes physical activity to use the energy provided by the carbs and if you do not do that much physical activity, it gets converted to fat and stored in the body. So conventionally it is better to eat less carbs at dinner since after dinner we do little physical activity.

      The diet seems fine, but maybe you need to do some more calorie burning? If you have no medical problems try something more strenuous than walking and yoga?

      @ nasreen you have reached the stage that is called the plateau! This is where despite all the diet control and exercise the body will not loose weight. Now take a break for 5 days from exercises. Continue eating healthy and then restart exercises after 5 days, then you will be able to move the weight again.

      cashmere i walk 5 km in a day.i complete 1 km in 10 mins then i take rest for 2-3 min and then skip for 1 min around 100 counts or jog for 200 mtrs. is this correct and one more thing i m not able to reduce now.my weight is hanging around 70-72.i came down from 78 to 70.my regime is same .wat wuld be the prob?

      @teja break up the exercise routine into ten minute slots that will help save time.

      @ RK no binge eating is bad any way you look at it. better to give in to your urge and have a small bite rather than binge.

      @ Sony Drinking water after eating affects digestion, best to avoid too much water after eating.

      Good motivational article. Can you please tell about any free or binge days u take in a week. For example many people say that you can take 1 day off in a week to eat whatever you want so that there would be no cravings. Did u take any days off in those 2 months?

      Also did you exercise twice a day on all the days of the week? Was there a rest day?

      @ Soma, the best way is to eat sensible and exercise for all you are worth. Its the healthiest way to lose weight.

      @Nasreen, that is great news! All the best for the next 8 kgs.

      @ Teja, stopping eating regular food will make you put on more weight as the body feels that it must store its fat due to famine conditions. Eat regularly in small doses to make the metabolism more active.

      Multi vitamin pills do not have any fat, but of u are taking cod liver oil pills or omega pills then there will be some calories from that as well.

      nasreen cycling in a gym can be just as effective as long as you adjust the program to give you slopes and plains and an overall good cardio workout.

      Nasreen in my quest to lose weight I went trough this phase where i tried out all kinds of weird diets, and the GM diet was one of them. You can read about the others in a hub that I wrote about them. It was one of the few diets that actually did help u lose some weight.

      Nasreen, this is also known as the General Motors diet as it was originally developed for the workers of that company in Detroit. The diet usually helps you lose about 2-3 kgs in the week.

      hi cashmere is this diet plan ok with 1 hr brisk walking Day 1 [Fruits] – Day one of your diet regime will start with all fruits diet. You may eat fruits of your choice and in any quantity. There is no limit. Eat till your stomach is full. In case you don’t find fruits in nearby stores, you can substitute it with packaged fruit juices but avoid fruit juices that have preservatives in it, they don’t really do any good in this case. On day one, you must eat fruits ONLY and don’t forget to drink at least 7 glasses of water.

      Note: The only fruit that will not be on your plate is Banana. Every other fruit is ok except banana. Don’t limit it to just one fruit, have as many different fruits you can.

      Day 2 [Vegetables] – This is all vegetables day. If you prefer, you may have raw or/and cooked vegetables. Eat as much as you want to, no quantity restrictions. If you want to cook the vegetables, you may do so but avoid using oil while you cook. 7 glasses of water today also.

      Day 3 [Fruits and Vegetables] – On day three, you will eat a mixture of fruits and vegetables. No quantity restrictions, eat till you fill your stomach. Also, eat one banana today, just one!

      Day 4 [Vegetables, Bananas and Milk] – Today you will eat 6 bananas, 3 glasses of milk and small quantity of vegetables. In the morning, your breakfast will start with 2 bananas and one big glass of milk. You will follow this in the afternoon for your lunch. In the evening eat 2 bananas, eat vegetables and drink one glass of milk.

      Day 5 [Rice and tomatoes] – Today you will have one cup of rice, six full tomatoes (medium size) and since you are having lots of tomatoes, drink 10 glasses of water today.

      Day 6 [Rice and Vegetables] – One cup of rice and raw/cooked vegetables of your choice. It’s recommended that you eat rice in the morning and for rest of the day, eat vegetables.

      Day 7 [Fruits, Vegetables and Rice] – On day seven, eat fruits, vegetables and 1 cup of rice. You may substitute fruits and vegetables with juices as well, but that is to avoid.

      This diet regime works well by burning more fat than accumulating it and since it avoids all sorts of food items that eventually gets converted to fat to become a part of your body, the weight loss is faster and harmless.

      At 17the best way to burn fat would be to jog or play games like squash, badminton and basket ball. For the waist in particular try some simple yoga asanas that make you twist the area. They are very effective for toning the tummy muscles. Thank you for the compliment, I feel the saree is an amazing dress.

      Well I am 17 and my height is 5''7' and my weight is 68 kgs..i am not obese but I have to burn this baby fat...my waist is 36 inches and my target is 28 inches, plz suggest me some tips on how to reduce my waist fat , my ideal target is 58 kg which is 10 kg weight loss(same as you)

      Exercise is the best remedy at your age. Do at least three different forms of exercise in the day. Walking, playing outdoor games like basketball and badminton are great ways to burn up calories and lose weight. Also keep a check on the junk food you eat.

      Hi Annie, You did not mention your height, and general body type. These are important considerations to determine your ideal weight. In general I'd just ask you to pep up the exercise routine and limit the junk food intake.

      Kirra, at your age you should not be dieting at all, it has to be more calorie burning with exercise. Do a lot of physical activities

      Sumita, the little things do add up. Just think of small things that you can do to burn calories which can be incorprated in your daily routine. Then calculate how much of it you need to do to burn 500 calories a day. Simple pranayam breathing for 15 minutes can help you burn 50 calories with ease

      Hi, I am sumita. I am 85 KG and 34 years old. I am a working mother of my two children aged 6 and 2. I do not get much time to exercise or join gym. I do 20 minute walk followed by some exercises. what else should i do to reduce the weight. I have a sitting job in office. do you think that having light lunch and dinner can help me more in reducing weight

      That's a tall order swetha, do u really need to lose so much weight so fast? A gentler pace would be healthier in the long run

      I am on the same page as u were, I have a kid of 4 yrs age, before delivery i was 54 kgs and then I took less than two years to put on till 67 kgs, I m now trying to do hell lots of things but u know, because of work and foody habits I am not able to keep the consistency and could not reduce a single kg. Ur story is very inspirational and hope I also reach my goal as u reach. :)

      Am an avid gymmer, and even more of an eater.

      When I stopped gymming and work took over my life, weight started piling up with no time to gym. Am trying to workout five - six times a week, but no diet control as such. No shift in weight yet.

      your article is inspiring i am highly overweight and i weigh nearly 110 kg it really feels bad on my part and because of this i seemed to have a low self esteem.i have took up walking.i am walking for an hour daily and i don't have a proper plan of dieting pl help me with that and what kind of other exercises/workouts should i do to reduce my weight pl help me out with this.i badly need to reduce weight....

      hi ive read your article its too motivatinal and inspiring, i am also joining the race of reduceing weight,i m 77 kgs as of now and was 58 kgs when i got married 5 years back, i don't wanna reduce 15 20 kgs in a month but i want get back into shape as soon as possible(within 6 months atleastwant to reduce 15kgs) by following porper diet and exercise can you pls help me out in that my deit and exercise programeis as

      1 cup tea with sugar 7:30 am

      3 chapaties 2 pm

      1 cup tea with sugar 5:30 pm

      either poha or upma or tomato soup and a glass of milk 8 to 9:30 pm

      my exercise schedule

      20-30 min treadmill in moring

      10 min kapalbhati in morning

      walking in my house whenever i get timeto walk, thats it can it is possible to reduce 15kg in 6 months

      Kavita there was no special diet chart that i followed. I ate the same things that I cooked for my family. ONLY I ate less of each thing, plus I avoided most fried products ad bakery products. That was the only difference
