Got a Hyperactive Kid at Home? Handling an Over Mischievous Kid
Handling an Over Mischievous Kid
Kids who expose over mischief and hyperactivity often turn out to be a head ache to parents. Always running around… flinging away anything and everything that comes along their way… endlessly restless… these over mischievous kids create problems at school as well. This diseased condition is called ‘hyper kinetic disorder’ or ‘attention deficit hyper activity disorder’ (A.D.H.D).
Such kids usually exhibit the symptoms of hyper kinetic disorder even before they turn six. They prefer to move with reckless speed right from the toddling stages. Parents usually ignore these behaviors as part of the usual inherent mischief. Situations change when the kid concentrates on hurling away anything that they can! The condition becomes even more grave when scoldings and punishments no more intimidate these kids. When these kids start going to school, yet another epoch of trouble arises. The matter becomes all the more complex and worse when teachers picturize these disobedient children as trouble-makers.

Symptoms of ADHD
Absolute carelessness, little attentiveness, constant indifferent movements, impatience, intolerance, talks without a second thought, reckless approach towards anything- these are the major symptoms of hyper kinetic disorder.
Activities of these hyperactive kids like experiments done upon electric switches and equipments, jumping from heights, climbing trees at a fast pace and the like, at times, end up in mishaps; if not death itself. These kids often exhibit reluctance to accept failures while playing with other children. They will be short-tempered in nature and will always be inclined to attack others. Keeping queue and patiently waiting for something to happen are absolutely out of question when it comes to these kids!
Besides exhibiting the above mentioned traits, some kids frequently tell lies and may even steal others’ belongings. They usually love to hurt animals. Chances are higher for them to skip classes, and even run away from home. This condition is called Hyper Kinetic Conduct Disorder.
Causes of ADHD Disorder:
The central lobe of the brain functions along with the temporal lobe and the frontal lobe to coordinate the qualities of attentiveness, concentration and self-restraint. Delay or lethargy in the coordinating function of these organs accounts for the problems of hyperactive kids. Both physiological and psychological reasons like ailments that affect the mother when she is carrying, disparities between parents, a drunkard father, dysfunction of some hormones etc. may cause this delayed functioning of the brain. But hyper kinetic disorder has been found in children who don’t have the above mentioned psychological or physiological backdrop. The basic reason of this disease is nothing but the delayed functioning of the brain lobes.
Treatment for ADHD:
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is not something that can be cured by means of simple counseling or advices. Since the discord of brain is the basic cause of this disease, medicines need to be used to bring these disorders under control. Stimulants like Methylphenidate and other medicines like Atomoxetine, Clonidine and Risperidone etc. are the medicines used in the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Medicine should be prescribed only after considering the kid’s age, health conditions and peculiarities of the symptoms. Some people have the misunderstanding that these medicines damage the brain. But scientific researches have proved the credibility, reliability and effectiveness of these medicines beyond question.
Along with the medicines, behavior therapies that help change the conduct, psychotherapy, Parent Management Training or PMT aimed at parents etc. play a significant role in curing ADHD. Despite punishing children always, it is advisable resorting to methods such as ‘time out’. Systematic methodologies should be adopted when it comes to the academic studies of these kids. If the treatments can be initiated immediately after the symptoms become evidenced, improvements can be made in the behavior and overall performance of the kids having Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.
