There are times around a year when either your are a binge drinker, social drinker, or a heavy drinker, you go overboard with eating and drinking, partying all night, and the result is hangover the next morning which challenges to spoil your whole day.

There are very effective natural remedies which can resolve your hangover and you can start your day afresh with a pleasant feeling instead of binge drinker the past night.

What Is Hangover?

What is hangover is answered when we understand what causes a hangover. After the intoxicating effects of alcohol wears off, we are left with physiological side effects of it, such as headache, muscle ache, joint ache, sensitivity to light and sound, and thirst.

When we ingest alcohol, body in order to metabolize or digest it needs so much energy that our brain gets short of blood sugar which impairs the brain function. Also alcohol is a diuretic and we urinate much more leaving our body dehydrated. In plain language, so many enzymes and chemicals are involved to metabolize the contents present in alcohol that it alters the normal functioning of our body and our body shows symptoms by hangover.

How To Cure A Hangover — Natural Remedies

a) Start your day with fruits such as apples. You can chew a raw apple a few times a day starting with eating a raw apple empty stomach. Alternatively, you can drink apple juice a few times a day. This will be effective in curing a hangover.

b) Banana is considered as one of the best cure for hangover. Eat two bananas empty stomach and also dip the peels of banana in a glass of water for an hour and drink it. Bananas are full of minerals and sugar which replenish the body's lost content of minerals and sugar and this is how to get over a hangover.

c) Honey-lemon drink is a considered one of the best ways to cure a hangover. It not only replenishes the blood sugar requirement of our body but also helps in getting alcohol digested quickly and relieves our body from symptoms. Prepare honey-lemon drink by adding juice of one lemon and 3 teaspoon of honey in a hot cup of water, stir it well, cool it off to lukewarm water and then drink several times a day.

Or else just have 4 teaspoon of honey every few hours till you feel better.

d) For instant relief a make a cup of black coffee and add four to five tablespoon of lemon juice in it and mix this drink well and drink it taking small sips.

e) Ginger is herb which helps in breaking up the alcohol in our digestive system quickly and also relieves the symptoms caused by it such as uneasiness or vomiting. It is used since ages as a cures for hangover. Chew small pieces of ginger four to five times a day or drink ginger tea for curing a hangover.

f) Do it at home: "Chewing 2-3 small pieces of ginger or taking a cup of ginger tea lends fast relief. In addition, you can prepare a brew by boiling 10 to 12 slices of fresh ginger root in 4 cups of water for ten minutes. Now, add the juice of one orange, 1/2 lemon and 1/2 cup of honey to it. This concoction helps stabilize blood sugar, which is usually low after alcohol consumption", suggests Dr. Sharma.

g) Mint leaves are used as hangover cures. You can chew 4 to 5 leaves at a time or can prepare mint tea and drink it four to five times a day. This will especially help you in any kind of stomach symptoms like bloating, gas, intestinal pain or cramp, etc.

h) Lime or Lemon is easily available and amongst one of widely used natural remedies. Either you can consume the lime or lemon juice directly or prepare lime or lemon tea and drink it as cures for hangovers. Also you can extract the juice and add sugar and drink for fast relief. Lemon is yellow while lime is green. Both are very rich in vitamins and minerals and it not only replenishes the minerals but detoxifies the body also. But when you have stomach upset, avoid drinking this and instead drink apple juice.

i) Tomato salad or tomato juice both is equally helpful to get cures for hangovers. Tomato aids in the digestion of alcohol quite quicker and this is how to get over a hangover.

j) A bowl of cabbage mixed with vinegar is used as cures to a hangover. It helps in headaches and disturbance in concentration.

How To Prevent A Hangover

The answer of how to prevent a hangover or how to avoid a hangover lies in the few simple steps like:

a) Cabbage is used since ancient times for hangover prevention and it is also widely available all over the world. The trick is to eat at least two bowls of cabbage salad before going for a drink. It will prevent hangover.

b) Never eat sweets or drink sweet drink when are drinking alcohol or after it. Sugary food or drink makes your hangover worse.

c) Do not drink in empty stomach. Entering alcohol too fast in your system will aggravate the hangover. Always fill your stomach especially with starchy food and eat starchy food with alcoholic drinks to avoid a hangover.

d) Do not consume alcohol very quickly or very fast. Drink slowly while eating a lot of cabbage salads and starchy food.

e) Try to alternate your alcoholic drink with non-alcoholic ones. This will not only avoid your binge drinking but also alcohol will enter your bloodstream at a slow pace.

f) The more the drink is dark the more it will cause hangover. So, try to drink transparent drinks like white wine, gin, or vodka.

g) Avoid soda or carbonated drink, as this soda speeds up the absorption of alcohol in our body worsening hangover.

h) Since alcohol is diuretic, it causes excessive urination and dehydrates our body. So keep drinking water.
