We Have a Quest for Inner Peace and Balance Within

Finding peace within comes in the form of a "how to" question for most of us. We are on a constant search for inner peace which we hope will bring us emotional and mental stability, good physical health, harmony in our relationships, and balance in our lives.

Because we are exposed to so much noise and conflict around us, it is often difficult for us to attain and hold onto that inner peace within.

Even those of us who delve into our deeper realms of spirituality and faith, are at times lost in our search. We may find ourselves plagued with an inner turmoil that interrupts a peace which "passes all understanding."

It's not so much that we lose faith as it is an awareness of our vulnerabilities to weaknesses as human beings. Those human vulnerabilities can temporarily cause the comfort of peace to elude us. Our faith is strong but our bodies and souls are weak.

The following poem speaks to that inner struggle for peace and the desire to grasp and hold on to it, in the midst of distraction. It was inspired by the practice of tai chi and qi gong breathing, which over time, makes the state of being at peace and in balance more accessible.

Finding Peace Through Tai Chi

The central focus of tai chi and qi gong is the breath. Learning to cultivate proper breathing during the practice of martial arts, moves "chi" or energy where it needs to go in order to create good form and enhanced overall good health. Breathing long, deep, slow, and fine breaths maximizes your tai chi experience, producing a feeling of lightness and peace.

What is Peace?

  • Freedom from war or civil disorder; harmony in human relationships; tranquility; quietness (The New American Webster Handy College Dictionary, 1995)
  • Peacetime; amity; friendship; harmony; concord; repose; quiescence; truce; neutrality (Roget's Thesaurus, 1985)
  • A state of security or order within a community provided for by law or custom; freedom from disquieting or oppressive thoughts and emotions (Merriam-Webster Ninth Edition Collegiate Dictionary, 1986)

[As we look to find "peace within," note that most definitions and descriptive words referring to "peace" include interaction with, or in relation to, another person or an event involving a group of people.]

"Reaching For Peace"

As I look for calm within

Distressing from the day

I reach for peace inside myself

An exhale and heartbeat away

The peace that lives within my heart

Is often hard to find

Caught up inside life's chaos

Stuck in my stressed out mind

To be centered is my goal

Stability within

Clearing out the daily noise

Shutting out the din

Praying, breathing, standing still

I find my place of peace

The pathway to my heart is clear

Distractions will now cease

Peace is just a breath away

I get there at my will

With God's help, I pause and say

"Be calm, my heart, be still."

How to Find Your Own Path to a Lifestyle of Inner Peace

As you journey on your individual paths for peace, look for that special activity that works best for you. Assess what it is you need, what you enjoy, and what will work best for you. Some prefer prayer, others meditation, and still others find a simple walk on a beach or through a meadow the most peaceful activity by which they can achieve inner peace.

Explore what works by trying something new, using self-help resources, or attending workshops. Perhaps a counselor or a spiritual leader can assist you with sorting out inner conflicts that interfere with your finding that path to peace.

Also consider being a part of a community people who engage in positive activities that will enhance a sense of purpose. For example, participating in outreach ministry, volunteer work, or performing acts of kindness that will make a difference in someone else's life. It has been shown that giving and helping others can add to feelings of happiness and inner peace. You will not only increase peace within yourself but you will spread peace to others.

Excellent writing and poem Janis. Inner peace is ever eluding many of us. We're connected to so many things, which allows our minds to constantly be active. I've personally come a long way from where I once was in regards to finding inner peace, but I still feel like I have a ways to go. Reading your terrific article lets me know that there are others who know and understand the importance of finding peace within. Another great article from you. Voted up, rated useful, awesome, and shared. You are definitely an asset to Hubpages :)

In a world of hustle and bustle, we want to experience a sense of peace in our lives. To do this, we have to take deliberate steps to find balance, that is, an equilibrium among the facets of our lives. It means that we might have to let go of some things and go for a simpler lifestyle. Thanks for sharing janshares.
