Losing Weight, From A-Z

Learning how to lose weight is a delicate balance. It's not just about eating right and it's not just about exercising enough.

It is also about having the right mindset and doing everything together so that it works. It's about not getting too stressed but not letting yourself get too lazy. And most of all, learning how to lose weight is about not giving up. Because no matter how many times you fail, you always have the next day to make better choices.

In this article, I have compiled a list of short tips, organized from A-Z, to help you get a better mindset and to cover the basics. Some of them you are likely to familiar to you, but you may find something new that sparks you to renewed success in your weight loss efforts.

A-Z of Weight Loss

The A-Z of Weight Loss

Losing weight is a complex endeavour. One of the mistakes I made in the past is that I thought just one thing would make me lose weight but then something would derail me (and it still does sometimes.) This is a list of factors that can help in the journey to get to a healthier weight, listed from A-Z.

Reasons to Accept Ourselves

Acceptance and Loving Yourself Are Important to Losing Weight

A: Acceptance: Accept yourself as you are. It's only by accepting yourself that you can change.

B: Beauty: Discover your beauty at any size. Don't lose weight to become beautiful. Lose weight because you are beautiful.

C: Calorie Counting: Counting calories is necessary to really know how much you are eating. Losing weight is about eating less and moving more. Period. You need to know how much you are eating, in order to lose. Even if you count points, like Weight Watchers, the principle still applies.

D: Determination: The main thing is, is not give up. Keep getting back to it. No matter how many times you fall.

E: Exercise: Exercise is absolutely key to losing weight and keeping it off. And everyone can do some exercise, even if it's from a chair!

F: Fibre: Fibre is another key to losing weight. Fibre helps everything digest. It helps keep you full. It's good in so many ways.

Cooking Is Important for Losing Weight!

Try out your kitchen! It's that big room with the food storage facility and that machine that heats up!

Allow Joy and Hope Even When You are Not Perfect

G: Grace: Have the grace to forgive yourself. For gaining weight. For your bad habits. And for the mistakes you still have to make. You're not perfect and you never will be.

H: Hope: The loss of hope is the beginning of addiction. People don't get addicted to food, or drugs, or alcohol because they feel good about their lives. They lose hope. Keep your hppe up, because it will inspire you when it seems impossible.

I: Inspiration: Have a reason to lose weight and remind yourself about that. Keep that inspiration in your heart day by day. You will need it, in order to keep going.

J: Joy: Enjoy the process! Losing weight is a long-term project and you need joy to keep yourself going. Getting discouraged is so easy and will happen. Joy helps get you out of it.

K: Kitchen: Use your kitchen! Takeout and restaurants are one of the biggest downfalls of weight gainers. Start cooking for better results.

L: Learning: Keep learning, about yourself and about weight loss. By continuing to learn, you can get yourself out of a rut.

Do the Math!

Math Helps You Lose Weight

M: Math: Math is one of the biggest components of losing weight. Take in less calories than you burn off and you will eventually lose weight. Just like keeping books for your home or business, you need to do the books on your calorie consumption and expenditures.

M: Movement: Move! And not just with formal exercise. Any movement helps. And it brings joy.

M: Measurement: Measure your food. At least at first, so you know how much you're eating. You'd be surprised at how much more you are eating than you think.

N: Nutrition: Don't just eat less, which is important, but eat well. Eat for nutrition; get your vitamins and minerals in.

O: Organization: Being organized is a big factor in losing weight. It's difficult to keep track of everything, to plan everything. Lack of organization can be an impediment.

P: Planning: Plan your menus for better success. Doing so will help cut down on impromptu choices that can get you in trouble.

P: Portion Control: Portion control is key. Even if you eat the right things, if it's too much, you won't lose.

Q: Never Quitting. Don't ever quit. Period.

R: Rest: By rest, I mean, not stressing. Stress is one of the biggest factors in weight gain. The more you can learn not to stress, the closer you are to getting your body to lose weight.

S: Support: Support is very important when you are trying to change your life. Whether it's getting off alcohol or learning to exercise, you need at least one person on your side. If you have more, even better!

Tracking Your Food is Important

T: Tracking: Keeping track of what you eat is one of the biggest components of weight loss success. You can't change it if you don't know you're doing it. I have used Spark People in the past. I still like that program but right now I use My Fitness Pal. I also use The Daily Mile to track my exercise.

U: Understanding: Learn to understand yourself and why you are doing the things you are doing. Getting mad at yourself doesn't work in the long run. Understanding works much better.

V: Vegetables: Include vegetables in every meal. Dietitians suggest the follow portion sizes for every meal plate: 1/2 vegetables, 1/4 carbohydrates, and 1/4 protein.

W: Walking: Walking is such a joy and is something everyone can do, no matter how much they weigh!

X: Examination: Have a doctor's examination to make sure there are no other underlying issues. Enlist your doctor's help to make sure you stay healthy during the process.

Y: Yum Factor. Don't give up on taste just because you're trying to lose weight. The key to long-term success is to still enjoy food, just less of it. Use spices and herbs to maintain the flavour while getting the calories down.

Z: ZZZ's: Be sure to get your ZZZ's! Sleep is very important for getting and keeping a healthy body. In fact, lack of sleep is directly connected to weight gain. So, grab that pillow!
