How To Put The Past Behind You And Start Living Your Life

Updated on August 12, 2013

Go After Your Life Full Force

Don't Torture Yourself with the Past

All of us have to stop torturing ourselves and learn how to put the past behind you and start living your life.

I am writing on a different subject than I usually do because I have been torturing myself for some time with my past and what I have done regarding the addiction to alcohol I had years ago. I am sure many of us have done something that we are not very proud of and always tend to think of the past and torturing yourself for no reason, because whatever it is, whether it is drinking alcohol or something else, you can not fix the past, you must work on the present and your future and forget about the past.

When someone has an addiction to alcohol like I did, we tend to miss out on so many things in our life such as our families and all those things our children did when they were young, and we were too tired up in our own life drinking alcohol and missing out on the things that can not be brought back.

Many of us dwell on the past wishing we had done something different, and that is fine to think that way, but it is too late to change any of it, so just forget about it and work on the now and enjoy your life now that you have forgotten about those things you wished you would have done different.

This is how we learn in life, by our mistakes we had done in the past. The learning lessons can then be passed down to our children if they so listen to us. My parents gave me lots of lessons of the things they did wrong in life and learned by those mistakes and wanted me to learn from their mistakes, but many times I thought they were crazy by what they told me. As I got older and wiser I then knew what they were talking about.

Forget About the past and Live the Future

Everyone needs to forget about the bad past you have had, and any mistakes you did in life and start living your life and planning your future for bigger and better times ahead.

Bringing back the past will only make you feel bad and you certainly will torture yourself as I have done for the past three years, but I have learned to just let it go and live the present and make the best of my life I have now.

This is what you need to do also if you have made some poor decisions in your life, and have done something that you are not proud of at all. Bringing back the past will not fix anything. The damage has already been done so just move on and make the life you have now a great one and one to be proud of.

Remembering the past for good times and fond memories are a lot different, and in that case it is wonderful to think of the past. Those fond memories of all the good times you had when your were young and spending quality time with your family and friends.

Those memories are something to hang on to for the rest of your life and to never forget about them, but the mistakes you made in your life that can not be fixed are just in the past, so don't look back, only ahead to a better and happier life.

That past is only a learning experience for all of us, and hopefully we learned a valuable lesson through our mistakes. I know I sure did, and I am living high on life by living it clean and sober and enjoying my wife and children more than ever.

It never does any good to dwell in the past because there's nothing we can change. However we can move forward to a much brighter and better future. It's all totally up to ourselves. I do agree that special memories are precious and that is something completely different because those memories make our present life happier for the remembrance. Interesting hub voted up and awesome.

So encouraged by your words today. It is learning from the past, and not staying there that makes all the difference. Well done!

Great hub, dwelling on the past is what so many of us do but keeping your eye on the road ahead is the only to gain ground on your destination of happiness. You can't very effectively move forward when you are constantly looking in the rear view mirror.

Although we can never forget our past, we can learn from it. I recently watched 'The Secret' DVD, and it was a truly life-changing experience for me. We all have our past, each of us is different, and each of us comes from a different background. But the main point is that we all can achieve anything we desire, regardless of where we come from. We need to look towards future, from this point right now, and stop looking back and feeling guilty and sad about our past experiences. Your hub delivers the same simple message. Thanks for sharing it.

Good advice, I try to stay present, but let negativity hover around me from time to time, and once I let it in a little there seems to be an avalanche and the parts of the past I am trying to escape comes crashing down around me. But you are right, it serves no purpose what so ever and needs to stay where it belongs!! In fact our sanity depends on it. Great liberating hub, my votes to you and sharing.

Thanks for this. I found this advice sound and comforting. I am the world's worst for regretting the past and wishing I could change things. It's such a waste of energy as the past can't be changed, all we can do is live in the moment and make the most of every minute we have. Alcohol saps everything out of you and leaves you lonely and full of self loathing. Feeling free from it's grip is liberating.

A nice coincidence... I just wrote a hub related to this topic.. I loved reading yours.. The best thing about committing mistakes is - you know what exactly are the things that others shouldn't do since you have been there and done it! Voted up as beautiful and interesting!
