About Pigmentation Or Hyperpigmentation

Pigmentation is the occurrence of dark patches on the face, or the skin at large. It is also called hyperpigmentation and it appears as patches or blotches that are darker than the skin around it.

Hyperpigmentation is the commonest form of pigmentation that affects both men and women. Though it is not life threatening, it affects the confidence and self esteem of the person affected by it. In such cases, it can also cause severe psychological distress.

Pigmentation is caused by excessive production of melanin by the skin cells. Melanin is the pigment that determines the color of the skin or complexion. It also acts as a natural sunscreen for the skin.

Whenever the skin gets damaged, it produces more melanin at the damaged site, primarily to protect the skin. The extra amount of melanin thus appears as pigmentation.

Natural Home Remedies To Reduce Pigmentation

Some Other Causes Of Pigmentation

There are some other causes of pigmentation some of which are listed below.

  • It is primarily caused by overexposure to sun's rays.
  • Allergies are another cause.
  • Certain medications may cause allergies that lead to pigmentation.
  • Hormonal imbalances.
  • Age spots.
  • Heredity is also a factor.
  • Pigmentation can also be a sign of skin cancer.

It is always better to rule out serious illnesses in cases of hyperpigmentation.

Natural Foods As Home Remedies To Reduce Pigmentation

Natural foods can act as home remedies to reduce pigmentation on the face and skin. Before I list some natural remedies to reduce pigmentation.

It would be better to understand, that first and foremost, one should protect the skin from direct sunlight. This will not only prevent new pigmentation from forming but also keep the one already present from darkening.

Also, ensure that you apply a good sunscreen (SPF 30 and above), whenever you go out; even if it is cloudy, and apply it more often, if you perspire a lot, or if you indulge in activities like swimming, etc, where there are chances of the applied sunscreen to wear off are high.

Cucumber Juice And Lemon Juice

Mix equal quantities of cucumber juice and lemon juice.
Leave on for 20 minutes.
Then wash off with cool water.
It lightens the pigmentation.

Turmeric Powder, Lemon Juice, Gram Flour And Rose Water

Take 1 tsp each ofturmeric powder, lemon juice, gram flour and rose water.
Mix them well and apply on the face or the affected area.
Leave it for about 15 minutes. Wash off with warm water. Refrain from going out in the sun immediately after this.
Preferably use at bedtime. Apply everyday.

Potato Juice

Grate apotato and take out its juice.
Apply on the darkened area.
Keep for 15-20 minutes. Then wash off.

Oatmeal, Yogurt And Tomato

Mash 1 tomato and extract its juice.
Add 2 tsp oatmeal and 1/2 tsp yogurt. Mix well and apply on the face or the patches.
Let it dry for 15 to 20 minutes. Wash off with lukewarm water.
Repeat daily.

Avocado And Milk

Take some avocado and some milk and blend both to make a paste.
Apply on the face. Keep for 20 minutes and then wash off.

Honey And Apple Cider vinegar

Mix 1 tsphoneywith 1/2 tbsp ACV. Whisk to combine well.
Massage it on the face and leave for 20 minutes.
Rinse with cool water and wash with a mild cleanser to remove the sugary mixture.
Repeat everyday.
The remaining mixture can be kept in the fridge and used within 5 days.
(From "Back to Eden:The Classic Guide to Herbal Medicine, Natural Foods, and Home Remedies since 1939" by Jethro Kloss).

Almonds And Raw Milk Or Cream

Soakalmonds in water overnight.
Make a paste with raw milk or cream in the morning.
Apply and keep on for 20 minutes.
This also removes tan.

Orange Peel And Milk

Grind some orange peels. Add raw milk to make a paste.
Apply on the face and leave for 15 to 20 minutes.
Rinse with cool water.
This reduces pigmentation and even pimples.

Banana and Guava

Make a paste of a banana and a guava.
Apply on the affected area.
Keep for 15 minutes and then wash off.

Sandalwood Powder And Lemon Juice/Tomato Juice

Add just enough tomato juice or lemon juice in sandalwood powder to make a paste.
Apply on the face and let it dry.
Wash it off with cool water.
For dry skin use cucumber juice instead of tomato or lemon juice.

Apple Cider Vinegar And Onion

Grind 1 onion and take out its juice.
Mix with ACV and apply on the pigmented area.
Keep for 15-20 minutes before washing it off with warm water.

Eucalyptus oil And Jojoba Oil

Mix 1/2 tsp eucalyptus oil with 4 tsp jojoba oil and mix well.

Massage a small amount on the patches.
Let it remain for 30 minutes.
Rinse with cool water and wash with a mild cleanser.
Repeat daily. The remaining mixture can be used within 30 days.
(From the book; The complete book of essential oils and aromatherapy by Ann Worwood)

Raw Papaya

Make a paste of raw and green papaya. Apply on the face and keep for 15 minutes.
Wash off with lukewarm water. Do this daily for 4 to 6 weeks.
It will remove pigmentation.

Mash a few ripe strawberries and apply the pulp on the face.
Leave for 20 minutes and then wash off.
These remove age spots too.

In Conclusion

Along with these home remedies, eating a healthy diet which includes carrots, milk, almonds, avocado, olive oil, berries etc is very essential and will help to get a control over the problem fast. It is very necessary also to drink enough water and right through the day.

This Hub interests me because too much sun exposure (even though I always wear a hat and sunscreen) has caused some spots on my forehead. I plan to try the papaya treatment since we have lots of papaya here and we eat it daily, too. Voted up and shared! Thank you!
