I developed this hub from a question asked by khmohsin. It's more like a statement than a question so I had to develop this into an appropriate hub title.

khmohsin wrote. how to avoid night mares?

Nightmare-What is it?

Noe before I go any further, lets try define what night mare is. To me, nightmare is terryfying dreams that occurs to a person once or continiously. This definition is from the top pf my head. You can prove this with your medical texts.

Nightmare isnt something that one should be alarmed about. That is when the nightmare occurs once in a while. But if you consistently have nightmares, than somnthing is terribly wrong. You have to check yourself, your mind, your environment. If something, an event or object is causing some disturbnces in your subconcious mind, than, nightmare is a likely effect.

5 Simple Steps

Jimmy just closed his eyes and dozed off into a deep peaceful sleep. After a hour of good sleep, he started dreaming. He dreamt that he was walking with a friend along a beautiful beach when all of a sudden the sand under their feet broke open a monstrous snake with three eyes, and razor like fangs crawls out and chases them. They try to run but their legs seem to be tied. He tries to call for help but can’t find his voice. Jimmy thrashes in bed, trying to fight off the monster. Finally he finds his voice and shouts at the top of his voice. His mother runs to his room and asks “What’s wrong Jimmy”. Jimmy says I just had a night mare. Then he falls back on his bed and goes to sleep again.

After a hour, he starts having another bad dream again. This time, he dreams that there is a hand without body trying to pull him into the dark..

Having a nightmare can be disturbing. The worse thing that can happen is when you have it consecutively. If this happens, something isn't quite right at the subconscious level. You can associate this with your dreams. All that happens in one’s life is stored in the subconscious mind. It comes out when an external factor stimulates the mind to release those memories. That is when we have good dreams or night mares.

5 Simple Steps To Preventing Nightmares

Here are 5 simple steps you can follow to prevent nightmares. Seek professional help if you find this steps not working for you.

Step1: Find you paradise

This is the place where you find relaxation and calmness.. You dont have to jet around the globe to find this place. This could be a unique spot where you go and often find yourself being more relaxed and being one with yourself. It could be in your back yard rose garden, a beach etc.. Before you go to sleep, visualise your paradise. It helps to draw and describe it. What your are doing is basically over write the bad memories that pops up in your nightmares with good memories. You can not delete a memory. You have to over write it.

Step 2: Discipline your thinking

Our mind operates like a computer and its a very obedient servant. Like the computer, it gives back what you program into it. But the mind gives back what we program into it in a synergistic fashion. Or in other words, what you program into your mind comes out multiplied. Think about good things that happened to you. Visit your paradise (step 1) before you sleep.

Step 3: Tell others about your dream

Its is healthy to share your night mares with close friends or families. Tell them how you feel and why the dream scares you. Tell them how you relate the dream to your real life. Its very unhealthy if you keep your fear bottled up inside. Write about your dreams if you find it difficult to talk to others.

Step 4: Challenge your nightmares

This takes lot of exercise and patience before one can perfect this step. Some people can manipulate their dream. They can control how things happen in their dream. I wish I could teach you how but I can't so I only point out that you can actually manipulate your dream.

If you can do this, you can change a scary scenes in the dreams into lovely scenes you can enjoy.

Step 5: Relax

I can't overemphasised this. Stress is a major cause of nightmares. If you lead a fast-phased, stressful life, you will not enjoy a good life and good sleep.

Before you can enjoy a good sleep, you have to work on reducing your stress level. Go easy on life. You can only live life once so slow down and enjoy every moments that come your way.

i remember when i was still studying and up until i was working, i had dreams about me being chased yet struggle to run fast and far. it was gone when i graduated and decided not to work again. now i sleep soundly. so it maybe because of what we put into our brains before we go to sleep. so i guess these tips you have here actually might work.

Interesting info. I have not met anyone who has not has a nightmare. Of course relaxing before sleeping can truly take the edge off. In the book, Interpertation of Dreams by Freud, he discusses the meanings of one's dream. Knowing Freud, it has to do with the unconscious. In some spheres, dreams are said to be your brain going over the data you have recorded - intentionally or otherwise. Like in a computer, it is the time when you brain is defragmenting the files and folders.

I agree with you that what we put into our mind certainly comes out in some ways and one way is through dreams. You see how you relate to your life when you were studying and working. The dreams reflected your internal struggles. When you graduate and stopped worked, it stopped. Bingo. Thanks for commenting

Same here Ian. But it's also nice to find someone with different ideas. This way we can discuss the differences and broaden perspectives. I can't wait to read more from you.

Bad dreams are frightening. I don't like bad dreams. At least there are ways to deal with them, to make them less frightening. Good advice, too.

      jpcmc,

Agree with you. Better to keep a liberal mind that a mind that's constricted to just one area...
