How To Stop Worrying About The Future And Feel Happy Today

Updated on October 20, 2012

In this hub I’m going to show you how to stop worrying about the future, and how by stopping your constant worry about the future, you will automatically be able to feel happy, and relaxed today.

Does that sound like a bold claim?

Well I’m here to tell you, that it is definitely possible for you to stop worrying about the future, and begin to feel happy right now.

So many people go through life always worrying about the future. Will I be financially secure in the future? Will I still be able to provide for myself, and my family? Will my marriage last, or will I end up lonely, and destitute.

Most people today are sick worrying about the future, especially with today’s economic climate. What future outcome are you most worried about? Are you worried about your credit card debt? Are you worried that you may never find love?

When you worry about the future, it affects your ability to cope with normally everyday activities today. Some people become so consumed, and worried about the future, that they practically freeze. They become so fearful, and worried that they are almost paralysed.

So why does this happen? Well I believe it’s simply because they don’t know what to do. People go to school, and university, and often they can get a degree. So it’s not a lack of intelligence that is causing so many people to become faint, worrying about the future.

The trouble is, that for all the information you learn from the education system, they don’t teach you how to understand your own mind. If you send your children to school, they will learn algebra, and the theory of relativity, and lots of other things. But nobody will teach them how to stop worrying about the future! A basic human fundamental need.

And you wonder why worrying about the future is so widespread?

I’m not here to criticize the education system, but to show you that there is no need, or indeed any benefit to worrying about the future.

The answer, and the information I am about to give you is from the often misunderstood, and highly debated ancient book called the bible.

Now I’m not here to bible bash, or to preach to you in any way. And even if you have no belief in God, whatsoever. The fact is, there is an ancient secret that will enable you to stop worrying about the future. And learning this secret can only help you.

Now it’s funny, that the bible is the most widely distributed book in the entire world, yet so many people don’t know what it reveals inside! Business people travel all over the world, they stay in hotels and get worried, and stressed out about what the future might hold. And little do they know that the secret to stopping worrying about the future is often hidden in a drawer in their bedside cabinet! A Bible.

So even if you are an atheist, recorded history proves that there was a man born on earth around 2000 years ago. He had such a profound influence on the world, that you’ve probably heard of him. Jesus.

It was when he was on the Mount of Olives that he revealed a way to stop worrying about the future. It was in a speech he gave, entitled The Sermon on the Mount. The entire speech was recorded By Mathew in chapters 5 through 9.
From my extensive research, it’s interesting to note, that there is no self help guide, nor psychologist on earth, that offers any further advice for worrying about the future, than you will find in The Sermon on the Mount.

I don’t have the space here to quote, or indeed talk about the entire sermon on the Mount speech. But I will quote you here a small snippet which contains the secret to stopping worrying about the future, and feeling happy today. It’s famously referred to as the lords prayer.

"Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil." Matt 6. 9-13

Notice that he asks for us to be given our daily bread for this day. This is very significant to stop worrying about the future. Why didn’t he say give us our bread for this week, or this month? Or why didn’t he ask for a years supply of provisions? Surely the more we stock up for the future, the less worried we will be, right?

Well that’s actually wrong! You see nobody can know the future. That’s the reason you’re so worried about it.

If you ask for a years supply of bread all on one day it will become mouldy, and be of absolutely no use to you whatsoever. You won’t be able to eat it all at once. Indeed a stockpile of mouldy bread will only add to your worry in the future.

So to stop worrying about the future, you must stop LOOKING at the future, and focus on today. Since no human on earth can truly know what tomorrow will bring, it’s a pointless exercise looking at an unknown quantity.

Of course that doesn’t mean we don’t plan for tomorrow, you can only plan to do your best. Make your plans for tomorrow, then leave it. Once you have made your plans for tomorrow, you must stop thinking about the future. You must close the door tight shut on the future.

You may have heard of the need for people to close the door on their past, if they are troubled by some past experience. Well to stop worrying about the future, you must also close the door on the future.

To illustrate. Imagine you are in a submarine underneath the ocean. The vessel you are in is completely sealed and watertight. That’s because the door on the submarine is closed, and you feel warm, and dry. You made your plans to travel inside the submarine, then you closed the door tight.

But if you were to open the door, the water would soon gush in, and you would be very uncomfortable, and worried. In fact you would be extremely anxious.

And so it’s the same with the future, you must make plans for the days ahead of you, then you must close your mind tight, just like a steel door, and you must not open it, or all your anxieties will flood in.

"Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? Matt 6.25

“Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?” matt 6.27

So why did Jesus advise people not to worry about the future, and only to focus on today? Well who by worrying can add a single hour to their life? Let me explain.

If you are so worried about he future, would you really like to know what the future has in store for you. The fact of the matter is if you were able to predict the future, then you would be even more worried. At some point in the future we are all going to die. Who knows what tragedies will befall you along the way.

If only you knew the truth about what evil is ahead of you, then what you are worrying about now would be of no significance. Just be glad you don’t know what’s really in store for you, otherwise you would be panicking.

So close the door tightly, and focus only on today.

In the lords prayer you will also notice that he asked to be delivered from evil. This is also an important part in helping you to stop worrying about the future. You may have heard of the expression “The devil makes work for idle hands.”

If you have nothing to do, those evil thoughts of worry will creep into your mind. So in order to stop worrying about the future, you must keep yourself busy. You must engage yourself in some form of activity that will keep your mind distracted. For example writing for Hubpages is an activity that requires your concentration. Therefore distracting you, and helping you to keep that door tightly closed.

What about forgiving others? Well if you are harbouring any kind of bitterness, anger, jealousy, or things like that. You will not be able to close the door on the future. You must forgive anyone that has offended you, and move on.

If you do not then your mind will still be focused on the future, and you won’t be able to stop worrying. This is because you will always have unfinished business. Anger, and jealousy are never satisfied, and will cause you no end of grief and worry forevermore.

If you apply these ancient teachings in your life right now, you will sop worrying about the future, and feel a calmness come over you. Try it and see.
