If you're an avid sports fan, you pretty much hear about a professional athlete being caught or punished for using PED's (performance enhancing drugs/steroids) on pretty much a regular basis. It seems these days it's not just the professional players that are experiencing with these banned substances, it's average, everyday people, even high school kids as well.The gym that I am a member of is in close proximity to a local High School, and a lot of these young, aspiring teenagers have been using them or contemplating using them. I am often asked my opinion on whether they should be used or not. My advice to anyone, male or female, who is considering going the synthetic route is one, If your willing to go that far as to taking an illegal substance, do it for a purpose. If your being paid to be an athlete/body builder or that's what your inspiring to be, that's a logical purpose and I can understand the argument of going that route. Taking steroids or HGH (human growth hormone) just to get girls or to help build your self esteem is quite silly in my opinion. Secondly, before you put anything into your body, you should know what it is and know exactly what it is capable of doing (positive or negative affects) to your body. Understand that things affect people differently because everyone's body is different. Many people only focus on the positive aspect of things and do not know or are not concerned with the negative influences that may appear during or well after the fact of usage. Testosterone is produced by the body naturally. When there is an abundance of testosterone in the body, whether it's naturally high levels or because it was taking synthetically, there are many bad side effects it can place on the body, not just good ones.

What is Testosterone?
A hormone that is produced naturally in the body (in the testes for men and the ovaries for women) and regulated by the endocrine system, it's imperative for the development of the sex traits. In men it augments sperm production, facial hair growth, deepens the voice and builds muscle mass. In women it supports bone and muscle strength. The body controls the amount of hormones that's in the bloodstream. Too much of the hormone (classified as a steroid because it is dispersed to all the cells) in the bloodstream can have an adverse effect, too little produced can also have unfavorable changes as well. Men produce approximately seven mg of testosterone per day (depending on the man), which is ten to twelve times more than their female counter parts. When puberty is reached, your hormone levels dramatically increase for body development and performance and begin to subside throughout the teen years. After the ripe age of 30, it's basically all downhill from there. Testosterone levels begin to descend about 1% a year until you reach a point, hopefully well into your older age that it becomes obsolete all together and a health care professional or medical intervention is required to assist in maintaining your muscle size and strength. Because everyone is different, there is no specific age/point this can onset, some people experience this at a much earlier age than others.

Other signs of inconsistent/low levels are loss of sex drive (both men and women) erectile dysfunction, vaginal dryness, gynecomastia (breast development in men), decreased strength and muscle mass accompanied by increased body fat, loss of bone mass which can result in osteoporosis, memory loss and diminished mental performance. Elevated levels of testosterone are usually characterized by a stronger sex drive, aggression and irritability. Abnormally high levels can also increase sperm production, cause male pattern baldness and excessive facial hair growth. Signs of high levels are more distinct in women as their physical features will go through more pronounced changes.
