How to deal with anxiety the Christian way: Remember what God has done for you in the past and it will give you peace of mind

Introduction

How do you deal with anxiety the Christian way? How does a Christian deal with anxiety without medication? How do you deal with anxiety Biblically, if you have a personal relationship with Jesus?

In this article, I want to show you how to deal with anxiety God’s way. I have suffered from anxiety for some years now and I want to share how I deal with anxiety to encourage my fellow brothers and sisters in the faith who are also struggling to deal with worries and fears.

Now, what are some of the things you can do?

Remind Yourself Of What God Has Done For You In The Past, Often

Sometimes we get very anxious because we forget that yesterday God helped us and provided for us, that today He is helping us to solve our problems, and that that same kind and good Father who helped us in the past and is helping us today, will also help us tomorrow too.

However, when you remind yourself of this often, it will strengthen your faith in the Lord and you will find it easier to trust Him to help you to overcome the challenges that you are facing.

I am battling a lot of problems in my life at the moment and that gives me cause to worry and fear. However, when I remember what God has done for me, when I remember that He gave me a scholarship which helped me to finish my University education, when I remind myself that He has helped me to acquire a laptop with which I am now working, it fills me with gratitude, it strengthens my faith, and I believe that God can help me to solve the seemingly insurmountable challenges that I have to deal with.

Therefore, write down 50 ways God has saved you in the past, or 50 problems God has helped you to solve in the past. Store this information on your phone and refer to it whenever bad thoughts come into your mind. It will increase your faith in God and fears and worries will lose their hold of your mind.

Praise God When You Feel Anxious

The Bible in Colossians 3: 16 says, “...sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs with thankfulness in your hearts to God.” Singing spiritual songs when your mind is full of fears and worries helps you to focus on God, it can help to break the train of negative thoughts which may be bombarding your mind, you will feel joy in your heart, you will feel your inner man being strengthened, and a sense of peace will envelope you as a result.

I practice this sometimes when I feel anxious and I want to deal with the anxiety. Subsequently, I feel a sense of inner peace, which helps me to calm down. Additionally, my soul finds rest when I sing my favorite gospel song or when I hum a spiritual song to myself when my mind is filled with fears and worries.

So, when fears and worries crowd into your mind and make you feel as though you are a hopeless and helpless person, start humming your favorite Christian song to yourself. As you gain focus, as your mind starts to shift from the negative thoughts to the humming, start singing the song.

Concentrate on the song with all your mind and with all your heart. As you continue singing, or if you continue this habit, the Lord will set you free from the shackles of worry and fear, He will deliver you from the prison of mental worries and anxiety just as He set Paul and Silas free in Acts 16: 25 and 26, where these two men praised God in their darkest moment when they were bound in prison.

Read God’s Word Every Day

Many Christians are worried and troubled about many things because they don’t find time to feed on God’s word. God’s word is food for your soul and spirit and so when you neglect to do this spiritual exercise, your inner man will be weak, your spirit will feel weak, and you will give in to fears and anxieties easily.

On the other hand, when you spend time in the presence of the Lord every day, when you listen to God speak to you, when you remind yourself of God’s promises, God’s wonderful promises will inspire and motivate you, you will be filled with hope, and you will feel that you can handle any challenge that you face with God’s help, and that will make you feel confident.

Additionally, reading God’s word and meditating on what you read, reading about how others were able to deal with very intimidating, challenging situations easily through God’s power will make you realize what a Great Helper you have as your Heavenly Father, a Helper who can teach you ways to deal with very tough problems, which will cheer you up, you will feel upbeat about life, and that will help to dispel fears and worries.

Say These Three Words Often

When anxiety grips you, say, “Fear not!” or “Be not afraid!” or “Do not be anxious!” to yourself. Keep saying those three words, which are words Jesus used whenever He realized that His disciples were afraid of a situation, until you feel that you are in control of your emotions.

You can use these words to deal with anxiety every day because as Jesus said, His words are spirit and life. When you say these words, your spirit will be strengthened and you will find it easier to think positive thoughts.

Additionally, the words “Fear not!” appear 360 times in the Bible, one for each day. Therefore, every day, you can say one “Fear not!” when you feel anxious and it will help you to calm down.

Deal With Your Fears By Developing Your Relationship With Jehovah

Develop your relationship with God to the level where you will love God truly. And just as a fearful child loses his fear of the dark when his mother walks into a dark room and assures him that she is there with him, when you love God and have faith in Him as the Controller of the universe, you will find it easy to believe that God will help you to pass the exam, that God will help you to excel at that job interview, that God will help you to find a job, that God will help you to pay your bills, that God will provide you with food, clothing, and shelter, that God will help you to be promoted at work, that God will cure you of that incurable disease, or that God will heal you of that terminal disease.

Therefore, obey God’s commandments, practice what you read from the Bible, love those who hate you and treat you with disrespect, forgive those who hurt you, share your possessions with the poor, live a holy life, and relate to God as you would to your Earthly friends and God will be happy with you and He will strengthen your faith to believe for miracles to solve impossible problems.

Look To The Face Of The Lord

The Psalmist says in Psalm 34: 4 that, “I sought the Lord, and He heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.” In other words, fears depart in the presence of the Lord.

For example, in Matthew 14: 25—31,as long as Peter kept looking to Jesus when He was walking on the water, he was able to stay above the water. As long as he was more conscious of the Lord’s presence than he was of the storm and waves around him, he stayed on top. But when he stopped looking to the Lord, he began to sink.

When you are tossed with inner storms of worry and fear, you will find calmness by looking to the face of the Lord. So, whatever challenges or problems that may be causing the fear, remind yourself that your times are in God’s hands and nothing can overtake you apart from God’s permission.

Additionally, think about God often, focus on His attributes such as goodness, kindness, mercy, and grace, and not on the challenges you are facing and you will find rest for your soul, you will have inner peace inspite of the storms all around you.

Meditate On Bible Verses Often

Research shows that meditation can help people to deal with anxiety. So, practice Biblical meditation often.

I do this sometimes. I spend some time reading Bible verses that deal with anxiety and depression and then I try to think about the lessons I have learned from the verse or passage I read. I think deeply about the verse, I commit it to memory, and I try to focus on that verse throughout the day. That helps to calm my anxieties and my fears.

At other times too when I feel anxious, I take a sheet of paper, I recall some of the encouraging Bible verses that I have read and committed to memory in the past, and I write them down and read them. I Then I meditate on them and that makes me feel happy. This exercise helps me to focus on God, my faith grows stronger, I feel calm inside, and I feel at peace and relaxed after I finish this exercise.

You may choose to practice it too when you realize that fears and worries are troubling you. Sit quietly with a pen and sheet of paper, but without a Bible, and write down 10 how to deal with anxiety Bible verses that you remember.

Read the verses loudly to yourself and ruminate upon them. This exercise will remind you that God is more than able to help you deal with your fears and worries, and that will give you renewed hope which will revitalize your spirit and give you courage to fight the challenges before you.

Fast Often

Fasting is one of the spiritual exercises that Jesus prescribed for Christians. When you fast, it helps you to humble yourself before the merciful and gracious Heavenly Father so that He can hear your prayers—you honor God by telling Him that you know that without His help, you feel you cannot deal with your fears and worries on your own.

When you honor God this way, His heart will be glad and He will answer your prayers for deliverance from the fears and worries that are tormenting you.

Furthermore, this exercise has a calming effect on the body— as you fill your mind with thoughts about God, as you focus on Him, worries and anxieties leave the mind and you relax and calm down as you subject your will to the will of God.

Additionally, scientists confirm that fasting can help people to deal with anxiety.

There are many ways you can do a fast to entreat God to deliver you from anxiety:

  • You may choose to abstain from your favorite foods and eat only what you don’t like, just as Daniel did in Daniel 10 v 2 and 3.
  • You may decide to do a three day fast without eating or drinking like Esther did in Esther 4: 16.
  • Another kind of fast you can do is to abstain from eating one meal (your breakfast), or to fasting from 6.00 am to 6.00 pm.
  • During your period of fasting, depend on the Lord for strength. Moreover, look cheerful, spend a lot of time reading your Bible, pray often, and praise and worship God otherwise it will just be a hunger strike.

Pray Every Day

Prayer can make you more optimistic, as well as give you hope so that you can conquer your fears. So try to spend at least five minutes every day to talk to God, to cast your burdens upon Him so that He will sustain you.

You may pray a prayer such as, “Dear Heavenly Father, I glorify Your Holy Name for Your kindness and good ness, for Your mercies and grace which have brought me this far in life. Father, I am worried that I have not paid Kofi’s school fees. Father, I am filled with anxiety when I think about the rent, when I think about the fact that the cost of food is rising whilst my pay remains the same. Lord, I worry sometimes because our marriage is not working, we are struggling to pay our mortgage and other bills, and to make matters worse Yaa has been diagnosed with mesothelioma and I have to deal with the stress of going through the mesothelioma suit. Lord, I am overwhelmed! I am weak, but You are Mighty. Almighty Jehovah-jireh who takes care of over 7 billion people, who provides food, meat, energy, water, free air for over 7 billion people, You are more than able to take care of me and my family. Omnipotent Father who provides more than 4000 kilograms of food for each blue whale every day, I know You can provide me with the 2 kilograms of food I need to eat every day to survive. I commit my cares into your hands. Please help me. Please make a way for me for You are the God who is able to make a zillion ways where there seems to be only one way, You are the God who makes a way in the wilderness, who turns the desert into pools of water. Your power is great. You are the wonderful Savior, the Mighty Deliverer, the Strong Tower, my strength, the Helper of the helpless, the Hope of the hopeless. Please save me! Please deliver me! Amen.”

When you cry to God from the depth of your heart like this, you will feel emotional release, and when You consider God’s power to save, it will help you to calm down knowing that you have put your problems in Good Hands.

Conclusion

If you want to deal with anxiety the Christian way, regularly remind yourself of what God has done for you in the past, praise God when you feel anxious, reaffirm your faith in Jehovah often, feed your soul every day, develop your relationship with the Lord, look to the face of the Lord instead of concentrating on your challenges, and do meditation, fast often, and pray regularly.
