How to Feel Happy Instantly

Updated on April 30, 2013

How to Elevate Your Mood Instantly

Are you feeling down now and want to elevate your mood instantly? There are infinite ways you can do to feel happy; you just need to find out what works for you instantly. Life is too short to be miserable, you deserve to be happy. So, read on for ideas for mood lifts.

1. Listen your favourite music

Go and download your favourite music or songs from itunes or watch it on youtube. They will boost your levels of endorphins, the brain's feel-good chemicals. Whether it is the lyrics, tune, or combination of both, the mood restorative benefits of music is astonishing.

2. Go and watch a concert or live band

Undeniably, music soothes one’s soul. Is there a live band or performances in town that you like to go? Check it out on internet or newspaper. A night out will help you forget the misery that haunts you, and you will feel good instantly.

When you are happy, smile and celebrate; but when you're sad, again celebrate to bring a smile to others.

Life is like a mirror: It'll smile at you if you smile at it.

It does require effort to smile, to be engaged in your world, in your surroundings, but once you smile, the rewards are endless.

3. Have some chocolates!

A recent Swedish research has shown that eating a standard bar of chocolate every week could lower a man’s risk of having a stroke later in life by 17 per cent. Chocolate is linked to feeling good for a simple reason – it tastes so good. It can instantly induce pleasurable sensations.

Research studies have indicated that “grin and bear it” does help to make one feels better. Another recent study found that physical act of smiling actually helped to reduce stress, regardless of whether the person actually feel happy or not. Additionally, a smiling person is more attractive to the opposite sex. But don’t fake it, he or she can see it.

4 Ways to Feel Happy Instantly

A few studies has shown that people were significantly happier when they spent money on gifts for others or charitable donations, rather than spending on themselves. In another study conducted by National Institutes of Health in US, volunteers’ brain was scanned to check the level of pleasure chemical dopamine that stimulates the same part of brain as sex and drugs. Volunteers who give more specifically, donating money, has been reported to release higher level of dopamine.

Paying a compliment to others, giving up your seat for others, helping a friend in need produces similar results. Random acts of kindness evoke positive thoughts, which is a great way to boost your mood instantly.

Scientifically proven, making a list of things to thank for is a great way to stay positive and happy. It will help you to keep appreciating what you already have. Keep a journal of thanksgiving is the most effective way to go for it. Don’t worry about journaling it every day, this mood lifter is found to be more effective when you don’t.

A lack of sunshine makes some people feel depressed. Sun exposure has been linked to reduce depression by 10% due to adequate vitamin D production naturally in the human body when exposing to sunshine. So, if the sun is shining outside your house or office, go for a walk and grab at least 10 minutes dose of sunshine. Sitting by the window with a view to the garden or street may elevate your mood instantly too.

When we walk, jog, cycle or engage in some other form of physical exercise, we generally seem to feel happier and less anxious. According to the Journal of Sport & Exercise Psychology, 15 minutes of exercise is all you need to increase levels of enthusiasm, excitement, price and definitely happiness. Exercise increases endorphins level in the body, which explained the feelings of happiness.

Getting fitness is a great way to lift depression and become happier. Scientific studies have shown that regular exercise can actually boosts your mood and makes you a more joyful person.

Nowadays, friends can be reached from around the world through online chat, smartphone chat, text messaging, which are almost free. Text your friends who are funny, and like to talk nonsense. It is undoubtedly an instant mood booster. Works for me !

Happy Song

Promise Yourself

To be so strong that nothing
can disturb your peace of mind.
To talk health, happiness, and prosperity
to every person you meet.

To make all your friends feel
that there is something in them
To look at the sunny side of everything
and make your optimism come true.

To think only the best, to work only for the best,
and to expect only the best.
To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others
as you are about your own.

To forget the mistakes of the past
and press on to the greater achievements of the future.
To wear a cheerful countenance at all times
and give every living creature you meet a smile.

To give so much time to the improvement of yourself
that you have no time to criticize others.
To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear,
and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.

To think well of yourself and to proclaim this fact to the world,
not in loud words but great deeds.
To live in faith that the whole world is on your side
so long as you are true to the best that is in you.”

Sure, Ingenira, that is the road to go but its said (Maharaj Charan Singh Ji) the mind can not stop its carvings (in such of happiness) and thus become contented unless you give it something that gives it permanent happiness.

      Well said, martvbs.

Hi Ingenira, sure these are great ways of getting out of that moody state. Just like Bruce i used to wonder why there is so much unhappiness. I did some research and i discovered that the major cause of most of our unhappiness is our inflated desire for material things and the unending cravings of our mind - material things, love, fame, power, beauty, status name it. Yet its impossible to satisfy all these cravings at any one time. Funny enough, if those we happen to get soon loose their charm and we soon start craving for new ones - a New phone model, a new house, a new boyfriend etc. To put an end to this game of circles, i resolved to put into practice one of the remedies i came across somewhere- Living a simple decent life. This means learning to keep your cravings to minimum and learning to love what you have. This is a bit hard in the beginning but with some effort and constant practice, its possible to master it. With its perfection, something amazing with will happiness - Experiencing of near True Happiness - "Happiness without a cause". In this state all what used to seem like problems magically disappear and you start experiencing happiness from every simple thing - the sound of rain drops of the roof, the singing of birds, watching the sunset, thinking about your children and many other things. The most beautiful experience of all, you will start feeling happy just with yourself - True Inner Happiness and you loose interest in all exciting staff - Loud music, clubbing, strong cravings and the like.

      Very well done Ingenira!

It baffles me that there is so much unhappiness in this world. I personally made a decision many years ago that it was unacceptable to be unhappy. And because I am human, I unconditionally love and accept myself during the times when I'm low. This, along with making the decision to enjoy life, has made all the difference in the world.

Again, very well done! Enjoyed the video and the links too!
