How to Ground – Aligning Yourself With Earth Energy

Have you ever been in a shopping mall or a room full of people and felt as though your feet weren’t firmly on the floor? Learning to ground will most definitely help with this disconcerting feeling and will also help you center your body and your mind into the space you are in. We hear so much about being “in the present” but it can be impossible if we are scattered and unconnected.

The benefits of grounding are numerous. Once grounded you are provided with a support framework in which you feel more secure, less scattered, and much calmer. Grounding can also assist in slowing your conscious reality so that you make better choices without feeling rushed. Over time this practise can help you exert better control of your emotions and your life.

Grounding is simply the act of aligning yourself with earth energies, bringing your awareness more fully into your body and then anchoring. Although it’s best to perform this exercise before you feel the effects of being unconnected, once learned it can be completed quickly and discretely.

Instructions

  1. First, sit in a comfortable chair with your feet flat on the floor. Your focus should first be on the connection with your feet to the floor (or the ground), and that of your seat to the chair.
  2. Close your eyes and take a deep breath. Slowly pull the air into your body by expanding your stomach area. This brings air deeply into your lungs. Slowly release the air through your mouth. Repeat twice.
  3. As you continue breathing, gently bring your awareness to the bottom of your spine. Imagine that from the bottom of your spine is growing a strong, healthy cord or root. This root begins to grow downwards through the floor and into the soil below.
  4. Imagine this root or cord working its way deeply into the earth. You can almost hear it as it makes its way through rock and soil, perhaps winding itself around other strong tree roots or huge boulders. Mentally project this cord or root all the way into the core of the earth, securing you to the earth and connecting you to the vast strength she holds.
  5. Next, imagine all your negative thoughts and fears coming together within your abdomen. Flush these unwanted feelings down through your root, deeply into the earth, until they are incinerated in the earth’s core.
  6. When all your negativity is released and you feel securely connected, I would like you to envision earth’s vast strength begin to travel up through your root and into your body. Imagine this energy is gold in colour and, with your mind’s eye, watch as it travels up through your torso, into your legs and arms, up into your chest, your throat, and up to the top of your head. Take a moment as you envision this beautiful energy streaming to every part of your body. Watch as it strengthens and revitalizes you.
  7. When you feel as though your grounding is complete, take in three more slow, deep breaths and acknowledge that you are now in the present and that your connection with the earth will remain unbroken throughout the day.
  8. Slowly open your eyes.

In Conclusion

As a highly sensitive person, I have found the practice of grounding to be an essential part of my life. As a psychic, a medium, and a Reiki Master I have realized that it is essential. I hope these easy steps will help you to feel steadier, stronger, and more fully present.

    Hello Seeker - I have to tell you, you just made my whole day!! There's nothing more satisfying than hearing that something I've written has helped someone. Thank you so very much for letting me know.

    You may also find that your psychic abilities become more pronounced when you are properly grounded and more relaxed. The very fact that your body and your mind are properly anchored and not constantly 'jarred' allows these energies to flow. The whole You is not concerned with trying to truly Be Constant in your own space and so these energies can flow much more easily.

    This is a great hub and I have to say it's a subject that interests me a lot. I've always had problems with grounding properly and tried various techniques but have only had partial success. I often found that for some reason after doing an exercise I would actually feel worse and a bit irritated as if nerves etc. were all firing off! Very odd!

    But just after reading your excellent hub I gave the mediation a go and boy it worked so well!! What I also found was that the meditation was calming but did perk me up but with no irritability or nervousness.

    I do need to ground more often than I do, as, like yourself, I'm very sensitive and also have - not very much - but a little psychic ability. So yes, it's really essential that I find a good grounding technique and this mediation, thankfully, has worked so well.

    Beautiful and useful. Sometimes things just become so tangled we run here and there and feel all scattered. Grounding is a great way to be complete as well as focused. Love this!

    This is sounds a bit like a self hypnosis activity that I use at times. I like the feeling of taking time just to focus and become centered or to ground as you have explained here.

    Hi Vicki and thanks for your comment. I believe we can have trouble sleeping when our energy is not balanced. Grounding balances our energy and also gives us a sense of safety. Knowing we are firmly rooted in life gives us the freedom to travel into dreams. Do you perhaps have the ability to astral travel?

    I'm so sorry to read of your tragic losses. I can't even begin to imagine what it would be like to lose a child. You must have worked very hard to once again see beauty in the world around you.

    Grounding helps me tremendously. I have been diagnosed as being Highly Sensitive to people and the world around me. Without the buffer of grounding I'd be lost in sound and senses.
