How to Make Homemade Cough Syrup
These days even over-the-counter cough syrups can be costly so you may want to consider making your own home remedies for a cough, at least until you make it to the doctor's office.
My great-grandma was good for her homemade remedies and recipes, much of which has been passed down by my own mother over the years and that I hope to pass on to my own children someday. This is one of those recipes.
By the way, I am not a doctor, nor was my great-grandma, but something has to be said for the meds with less "meds" in them. My mom gave me this little mixture as a child and it never hurt me but please consult with your doctor if you feel the need to. Also, because of the sugar in it I would recommend diabetics not using this recipe.
I also do not endorse using Whiskey in the recipe for anyone under the age of 21.
Benefits of Lemons for a Cough
There's something about the lemon's juice that can relieve a sore throat and that cough too. You'll find lemon goes well with a lot of things when you are sick.
Also, if you happen to also be running a fever, lemon juice is known to bring it down quickly.
Benefits of Sugar for a Cough
Now, please don't take this as an overall pass to have sugar anytime you want. In my opinion, nothing is bad in moderation; just be responsible.
You never want to have too much sugar but when you are sick, believe it or not; it can actually be beneficial to your system!
You need energy to fight any kind of bacteria in your body and sugar can give your body that boost it needs by increasing your metabolism.
- 1/2 Cups Sugar
- 1 Tablespoon Butter
- 2 Teaspoons Lemon Juice
- 1 Tablespoon Whiskey, (Optional for Age 21 and Over)
- 1 Teaspoon Honey, (Optional for thickness)
- Mix together in a small saucepan over a low heat.
- Add a few drops of water a little at a time to make syrup texture.
- Boil for 1 - 2 minutes.
- Let cool before taking so you don't burn your mouth; a little warm isn't bad however to help loosen up your chest.
- I hope you feel a little better. :)
