How to Quickly Get Rid of a Bloated Stomach

Updated on January 5, 2014

Food & Beverages

Do you currently have a bloated stomach? For some people, it appears they never get a bloated stomach regardless of how much they eat. For others, the bloated stomach appears as soon as they take their first bite. In this article, we examine why this is the case, and find out ways to get rid of a bloated stomach quickly. Of course, the easiest way is to simply prevent it from happening, but we all have moments when we just need to eat a lot of food. If you need the bloated stomach to disappear within a few hours, here are some tricks you can try out.

#1 Water and lemons

The first trick is to drink water with lemon. Don't drink too much water though or else your stomach will appear even bigger than before. The water and lemon mix is good for several reasons. First, the water helps your bowel by helping you flush all the food remains from your system. Second, the lemon has nutrients and minerals that help you cleanse the internal body. This is why you may heard of things such as the lemon diet.

#2 Drink hot tea or water

Drinking hot water or tea is another way to get rid of stomach bloating. For example, chamomile tea and mint tea both have properties that soothe your stomach. Hence, you are less likely to be affected by stomach bloating.

#3 Watermelon

Still down for some dessert? Instead of reaching out for something sweet such as cookies and cakes, eat some fresh watermelon instead. The sodium-potassium balance is very important when it comes to maintaining your digestive system. Watermelon is rich in potassium so it will counteract against all the sodium you ingested from the main meal.

Whatever method you try, you probably want to be near a bathroom because the content that is making your stomach bloat will have to be excreted at some point.

You probably don't want to work out straight after a meal, but here are a few basic exercises you can try to reduce stomach bloating. First off, you want to start by walking around for around fifteen to twenty minutes. Basically, you are helping your body move things along in the digestive system by doing any sort of basic exercise. Once that's done, do some stretching exercises to warm up your body. Avoid doing anything that directly affects your stomach such as crunches and planks. For example, while I am walking or doing a brisk jog, I'll move my arms around in a circular motion. While you are doing this, don't hold it in if you need to fart. It is important that you get as much gas out of your system to get rid of the bloating in the stomach.

As I stated earlier, the best way to get rid of stomach bloating is to simply prevent it from happening in the first place. Here are a few tips you should have in mind when it comes to avoiding any sort of heavy bloating in the stomach.

#1 Before, during, and after. Make sure you drink plenty of water throughout the day. Water is vital in helping your digestive system excrete any remains from your body. It also helps to drink glasses of water before a meal because you will feel less hungry, and hence eat less.

#2 Watch what you eat. Some foods are known to make you feel extremely gassy. The prime culprit that almost everyone probably heard of is baked beans. Make sure you also reduce the amount of sodium your body takes in. Try and cook your own food instead of relying on processed food.

#3 Watch your calorie intake. If you are also trying to lose weight, it is highly important that the amount of calories you take in is not significantly higher than the amount of calories your body burns. You don't want an excess layer of fat in your body or else your bloated stomach will look even bigger.

#4 Instead of following the conventional plan of having three meals per day, try having five smaller meals instead.

#5 There are a lot of people out there who don't chew their food enough. That is a big problem because you are making your digestive system work harder than it should be. If you chew your food more often, you are less likely to have a bloated stomach. Also, unless you are in a rush, take your time eating. You want to give your stomach enough time to churn all the food that is coming in.
