Porn addiction, as the name suggests, is the situation wherein an individual indulges into excessive pornography. It is one thing to simply surf the internet for candid pictures of beautiful celebrities like Kim Kardashian or Daniel Craig. But if you think that you are addicted to porn and that you cannot stop watching porn, read on for helpful steps that you can take in your daily life to learn how to deal with your addiction.

Yes, I am addicted to porn

Any self-help guru will tell you that acknowledging an addiction is the first step in learning how to deal with it. Instead of going into complicated things like 'realize the truth' or 'find inner happiness', let's take a simple, straight-forward and effective approach to break your porn addiction. "Yes, I am addicted to porn" is what you must say to yourself if you are indeed facing a porn addiction. Say this line every time you feel the urge to sit in from of the computer and watch porn. An acknowledgment of your own addiction may not have immediate results, but it goes a long way in strengthening your will against it.

Make a list of all outstanding tasks and chores

Wondering why we are talking about outstanding tasks and chores when we talk about learning how to break a porn addiction? The reason is quite simple. The desire and need to watch porn often stems when you have nothing to do. The very minute you feel that your porn addiction is kicking in, pull yourself up and make a list of your outstanding chores whether it is going to the laundry or going to the bank. Your mind will immediately be diverted to a chore that may seem urgent enough to get priority over pornography.

Go into public space every time you have the urge

An easy obstacle that you can create to stop yourself from watching porn is to put yourself in a public space. Let's consider an easy real life situation wherein you are in your own room and feel like surfing porn on your computer. What do you do? Simply hit the kill switch on the computer and walk out to the living room or the longue room in full view of other family members. And if you are still fidgeting, pick up the newspaper or the magazine to divert your mind away from your porn addiction.

Keep yourself busy

If you have already realized that you are addicted to porn, chances are that you have also noticed that you will tend to watch porn more often during times when you have nothing concrete to do. You will also notice that the days when you are on the run, getting things done and keeping busy in studies or work, you are less likely to watch porn. There's you answer right there, folks. To stop watching porn, simply keep busy and occupied!

Find a hobby

If you fail to find things to do that can divert your mind away from your porn addiction, a safe bet is to find a hobby. But don't just pick any hobby. Pick a hobby or an activity which you are really passionate about. It can be as simple as playing a musical instrument to as complicated as making robots at home. The key is to find things that are you are passionate about which will be more compelling to spend time on, rather than watching porn.

Find your own negative trigger

If you want to indulge in some psychological warfare with your pornography addiction, try looking for triggers that induce negative feelings towards pornography. Some of the commonly used thoughts to stop porn addiction are

  • Pornography is against the teachings of most religions including Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Buddhism and Judaism
  • Pornography may lead to sexual exploitation
  • Pornography is a fake portrayal of sexual activity
  • Pornography exploits the viewers by misleading them
  • Pornography is wrong
  • Pornography often has a derogatory approach to women
  • Pornography can have a negative impact on the minds of children and society in general – by watching porn, you are promoting the same
  • Pornography can make women look like objects, rather than human beings

Indulge in your fantasies with your partner

It is a known fact that the primary purpose of watching porn is to seek sexual satisfaction whether it is in the form of masturbation, indulging in sexual fantasies or satisfying other related urges. The next time you find yourself watching porn, ask yourself "Am I wasting time watching fake sexual activity? Would this time be rather spent with my partner where we can both indulge in our sexual fantasies?" Chances are that you will answer both questions with a Yes. Stop your porn addiction by realizing that sexual fantasies are better indulged into, in real life than on a computer or TV screen.

Seek help in dire circumstances

Seeking help when it comes to dealing with your porn addiction should be a last measure action when everything else has failed. And really, you should only think of seeking help or even confiding with someone when the situation has got out of hand. So the question is, when should you seek help in regards to your habit of porn addiction? Here are a few possible scenarios

  • When watching pornography gets priority over spending time with the family
  • Pornography is a major part of your budget
  • You fail to find the same amount of pleasure with your real life partner, that you find while indulging into porn
  • Under no circumstances can you control yourself from watching pornography on a daily basis
  • You are deviating and addicted to extreme pornography and have even given concrete thoughts of indulging into sexual acts that are considered taboo or inhuman
  • Pornography has taken absolute control of your life
  • You and your loved ones are being affected emotionally by your inability to quit watching porn

I was on DailyMail for my daily fix of gossip, celebrities and more when I read about how pornography can take over someone's life. It immediately struck to me that I should definitely do a hub on this. After some research and talking with a few friends working in the publishing industry, I was on my way to writing a full blown write up on how to cure a porn addiction.
