How to cure gum disease

Updated on August 5, 2011

Causes and Cure

What is gum disease?

Gum disease describes swelling, soreness or infection of the tissues supporting the teeth. It is extremely common in adults, some estimates suggest up to 90% of people suffer from it!

Common signs of gum disease are bleeding from the gums when brushing, a tingling sensation or soreness in your gums, bad breath, and in more severe cases wobbly teeth.

What causes gum disease?

Plaque is the major cause of gum disease. Plaque is a film of bacteria that covers you teeth every day. Poor dental hygiene allows the bacteria to spread into the gums which over time will cause them to recede. Smoking also causes people to have more dental plaque and for gum disease to progress more rapidly than in non-smokers. Gum disease is the most common cause of tooth loss in adults today. However it is normally completely painless so to avoid a nasty surprise prevention is most definitely the key.

Is it treatable?

The good news is yes, in the majority of cases. If you catch it early enough you can treat yourself by simply having good dental hygiene routines - making sure you brush thoroughly , and flossing will help. However in more advanced cases a visit to you friendly neighbourhood dentist is required where he/she can dramatically improve or even stop further infection. The dentist will also show you the best way to keep your teeth and gums as healthy as possible.

What happens if i don't get it treated?

Over time your gums will recede to the point where the bone supporting the tooth is decayed. Eventually the tooth will not be supported and will fall out. Once this has happened the ONLY option will be implants or dentures.
