How to deal with Rain-induced depression (Seasonal affective disorder)- What you feel about it

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a mood change, associated with specific seasons. Many people suffer from depression because of short or long periods of rain. Here are some tips on how to deal with rain induced depression:

  • See a doctor, and get diagnosed, see if you really have SAD. Your doctor can suggest what's best for you, and can even give you anti-depressants.
  • Keep the doors and windows closed, curtains drawn, to shut off the rain visual.
  • Try pasting bright colorful pictures on the windows.
  • Paint your walls a bright color, and use bright lights throughout the household. Full spectrum bulbs and lamps can make a difference.
  • Keep plants everywhere. Decorate the house with photographs and/or arts.
  • Distract yourself by watching TV, talking to someone, or just plain sleeping, when it starts to rain, and see if it makes things better for you.
  • Invite someone over and do something interesting.
  • Have an indoor hobby that you can enjoy when it's raining.
  • Do not listen to sad songs when it's raining, as they can make you feel more depressed. Energetic, happy, upbeat tracks are the way to go.
  • Do go out in the sun and soak it up whenever the sun does come out.
  • Try using a light box. Sit in front of it for around an hour and see if it helps. (Consult your Doctor first)
  • Try taking Vitamin D supplements. (Consult your Doctor first) The lack of sunlight can cause Vitamin D deficiency.
  • Try dawn simulation.
  • Check your alcohol or caffeine consumption.
  • Exercise regularly to stay fit.
  • Trying going tanning once in a while.
  • Try visiting a warmer and sunnier place for a weekend or two. It may make you feel refreshed and recharge your batteries.
  • If it doesn't go away, consider moving some place warmer and brighter.
