How To Quit Smoking Without Really Trying
A Little About Me
People begin smoking for a multitude of reasons. My personal struggle began with Irony. When I was 17 years old, shortly after Christmas, my father nearly lost his 35 year struggle with tobacco. On a trip to Wal Mart with my mother, Dad suffered a major heart attack. After a virtual eternity in the emergency room, a thousand and one tests and probes, and very few answers,we finally found out the bad news. Dad was going to need open heart surgery. A triple bypass. We were told the surgery had a 60% success rate. As they wheeled my dad into surgery he hugged my mother, my sister and me, telling each of us goodbye. To me he added, "Your the man of the family now. Take care of your mom and sister." Through all of this I had remained strong. I had saved my tears. That line was the hurricane that destroyed the levy. The tears were coming. My ability to cope vanished. I made a Bee line for the parking lot. There I lit my very first cigarette, one from the pack my dad had on him in Wal Mart only a couple days before. As surgeons cut my dad open to save his life from tobacco, I gave my life to the same affliction. You know what they say.... teenagers are freaking stupid.
I spent the next ten years as a pack a day smoker. No, I didn't start right out with a pack a day, it took me a few months to get there, but I was hooked. I knew they were bad for me; hell, I had witnessed the certain danger first hand, but I couldn't help myself.
For all the bad things people have to say about cigarettes and tobacco, there are some positives. The nicotine does help with stress. Don't let any doctor or moron teacher tell you otherwise. At the time, cigarettes were also socially acceptable. Still, the health risks far outweigh these reasons.
Several times over the last decade I made the decision to quit. I don't remember who said it, but someone famous was once quoted as saying "Quitting is easy, I've done it a million times." Truer words have never been spoken.
Cold turkey, Nicorette, Nicoderm, that dumb ass prescription inhaler, hypnotism... I tried it all. Did they work? Not even a little. Most of them didn't last a day before they were tossed into the waste basket beside my desk.
The truth of the matter is that I really didn't WANT to quit. I liked the feeling of smoke in my lungs and the hit on the back of my throat. I liked holding that thin paper tube between my fingers and pretending like it was all I needed to cope with stress and frustration. I liked it in wonderland.
How I Did It
The downside to wonderland is sooner or later the red queen is going to come along and she is going to be pissed that you painted those roses red. The knowledge that one day I would be on that operating table having my chest cut open just like my father constantly haunted me. I began to cut back and was moderately successful. The problem is, I didn't WANT to quit, so the cigarettes were always within arms reach.
Thank is when I stumbled across an ad online. The ad was for "electronic cigarettes". At first, it sounded silly to me. Cigarettes with no tar, no carcinogens, that I can smoke in bars and resteraunts? Even better, fake cigarettes that tasted and felt like the real thing? B.S. with a capital B. That's like saying sweet n low tastes like real sugar.
On the other hand, these fake smokes were also a hell of a lot cheaper than the real thing. Now they had my attention. I was spending nearly 200 bucks a month on cigarettes. I may not have wanted to quit, but saving money? Now that's a horse of a different color! So I did some research and thought I would give them a try.
I was completely wrong about these things! They felt like real cigarettes. Throat hit... check. Exhaling smoke.... check. Taste.... even better than the real thing. I went from smoking 20 cigarettes a day to smoking ZERO almost over night... LITERALLY!
Now, I should note, I tried a couple different brands before settling on the right one. Not all brands are created equal. The best product, for my money, is VAPOR KING. I have not been paid by this company or received any compensation in any way. I simply love their product. They worked where everyone else failed.
The Real secret to quitting smoking is to find the reason that works for you. I knew they were bad, but I did it anyway. The health risks didn't phase me. For me, saving tons of money was the key to my success. I loved cigarettes... then again I love movies too, but I don't spend 200 bucks a month on them. That would just be silly. Find your reason and stick to it.
I still consider myself a smoker. However, I am a smarter smoker now. Each time I order from the Vapor4life guys I step down my dosage of nicotine. Eventually I will be vaping with zero nicotine and my horrid addiction will finally have been broken.
For half a year now I have been vaping exclusively. These things do not suppress your craving for nicotine or make the craving easier to handle as the gum and patch do... the actually quench the thirst completely. I highly recommend doing some research. Find the brand that is right for you and dive right in. All you have to lose is a triple bypass surgery which you have a 40% chance of not surviving.
Oh, and for the record, my father is fine. The surgery was a complete success and he has been healthy as an ox ever since. He too found a way to quit smoking. The heart attack was all he needed. He hasn't touched cigarettes since.
