How to tune a piano. Well about how to tune your life?

Updated on February 7, 2014

A special set of tools may be required for tuning anything.

Some of us are blessed with tune. Some just blessed with loving a tune.

“should we not strive to be in tune with our wonderful world around us? And if we should not then what then of harmony?” ED (2014)

There is a man who speaks of love when he speaks of tuning a piano and he speaks of world peace and the harmony of all mankind and how the keys are just a piece of every human. And so our conversation in his broken American English and my broken Mexican Spanish drifted most naturally to peace among all mankind. In tune and in harmony and in peace and almost and maybe the most important is in the desire to create a music within us that promotes all the above.

This writer is no mamsey pansy peace freak. We must never turn a blind eye to injustice and wrong. And we must act or be an empty gong if we do not confront wrong when we see it. But to every great symphony there is the conflict the crescendo and the finale.

So let us look into being “in tune”.

Just love the Ebony and Ivory.

How do we stay in harmony with a world of conflict?

It is really much easier than you think. We humans complicate matters so much but such is not needed here. Do what is right. Isn’t that cool. All we need to do to be in harmony is to look at each interaction or situation and do what is right. Oh we worry so much that that approach will cause conflict and struggle and we just do not have the time and energy and someone may get hurt.

Sorry it does not really work that way. Harmony and peace and love and understanding and being in tune starts off as an “inside job”. If you walk up to a stream that looks beautiful and full of life you still do not drink the water unless you know that the lake upstream is pure and clear of bad. So it is with your heart. The stream that flows out of you is dependent on the lover reservoir within you.

Harmony is not created by 3 out of 5 musicians being lousy. It begins by all five being pure. And then you can work on synchronicity from there. And then the right music happens.

So we cannot begin our great journey to harmony on compromise of serious values.

A bad day with piano practice and my stubborn just 4 year old.

The boy just did not want to practice. Tears and fears. His life was changing because of his stubbornness and refusal. (but by goodness he is only 4) Finally quiet time and inattention in my office with me. And there was an “OK dad I want to do music”. Patience brought about peace. Not backing down, and not a deal but soft words and clear disappointment (is that guilt-maybe and we don’t want that) And we danced into the piano space and teacher and a four year old learned more about the music and fabric of our life. But forget all about that, dad is listening to what he harshly demanded and did not back down. Mutual respect brought us in tune with each other. Harmony was restored in our home.

So in home we rejoice as both musical and parent child harmony is restored and done in what is right for the world and each other.

That my friends is the tune and harmony and melody of life. Let the symphony crash down around you, your harmony is found not in getting along or going along but in being a right instead of wrong piece of our lives.

You knew this was coming. Kind of mushy but I like it!

Let me digress for some seriousness.

I do not know God. I think I do and I have faith I do, but God does not come and proclaim his existence to me but I feel it, and maybe it is just well being, but I do not believe that for a second, for I believe God is love and everywhere we can be.

Last night a good good friend lost his work. So be it in this economy. And after we spoke for an hour I went on to my evening after prayer for him. And then without my contact with my phone he texted me that “God just passed through me: totally know he did” and then next “I can’t explain it, maybe you can?” This man is a proclaimed non-theist. Yet a rebel from Catholic youth. He could have just explained it as a feeling of wellbeing or some other feelings. And so it seems he was in harmony.

I cannot explain harmony and will not really try to explain that in my youth of under 60 years. I do not know presence of anything but love. And love speaks through the heart and not my stupid English understanding ears.

Tune a piano with me.

All things are quiet and the piano is lifted open and we look inside and pluck each note/chord and marvel at the sound. I is beautiful but a little off so adjustment is made. That is beauty in creation. The difference is barely perceivable to my ears but does have a nicer resonance. A friend told me just today that we hear noise but we listen to music. That is powerful stuff. So this man tuned the piano with much patience and clear skill. But his ability to hear the sound and know how it fit into music and then adjust for it is a special gift. The pianist knows the proper keys to play to get the melody he wants but generally cannot tune a piano I wonder why. So the tuning is something not everyone can do.

I am quite certain they now have machines that can tune instruments. And I am sure it can be broken down empirically and mathematically. But as best I can determine no musician of notice plays on a computer tuned piano. How did those deaf composures and artists do that. Again there is science to explain that but science cannot replicate that.

So back to the tuning of our lives.

We have rain right now in our Southern California desert drought. It has been tough here but after all we are a desert and so the effects are not so dramatic. This is our rainy season and January was the lowest on record by some accounts. So rain here during a drought creates a harmony. It brings us back into balance. And it brings us back in tune with nature. Of special note here is that my homeless friends that live down in the canyon will not be flooded out because this time of year they migrate into and around shelters and weekly hotels as it is so cold for them. And the rains will bring in some new growth and so the canyons will provide more “cover” for them and privacy. And less fire danger.

Are you in tune?

Do you feel harmony daily?

See results

Our lives that seem so much better are more complicated.

Into our being as the new solstice approaches. And as full days appear when we wake and have our evening walkabouts. We should take heed as we did during winter to stay quiet and rejuvenate with rest. We now must begin to awake and be more a part of the earth to liven our step to grow and become green. The moon raises and lowers entire oceans made of water. You are mostly made of water/fluid. Do not be so naïve as to think that the moon is powerless to create a tide in you.

Let us wrap this up with some love.

If you read this and it appears you did I hope that we found some togetherness in my words. I hope a smidgeon of something to agree with and that you got in synchronicity with me for just a second. I love the phrase “whenever two or more of you”. I am brash and combative but that is so you can see the miracle of harmony in me and let it go to you.

Eric, I love it when you philosophize like this. "The tuning is something not everyone can do." Yet, there is a way for all who wish, to be in tune. Thank you.

Thank you very much DDE. Positive is king. A special thank today, and I know this is not much for folks who network and "drive" traffic, you are my 5,000th comment here on HP. To me that is very cool.

I enjoy your hubs because of your positivity. I wonder if you find negative in anything? haha. . .Seriously, though, you focus on the positive and I like that. It's much easier to stay centered or to become centered again if becoming off balance when positive energy is the focus.

I was just thinking of this yesterday, actually, It fits with your message, I guess, but I wrote it a couple of years ago.

I set aside time each morning to harmonize and balance and pray to what I believe God to be. Those days when I stray from what's right are long and miserable. I prefer to be in tune. Have a great weekend.
