I lost 20 pounds in one month on my Vitamix diet- Here's How

What is a Vitamix?

There are all sort of blenders on the market for people to use. There are juicers as well. The difference between a regular blender and a Vitamix is fairly significant actually. One thing for sure-the summer is a great time to start with smoothies and juices! They taste much better in the heat of the summer and they are very refreshing!

The first thing you have to get over is the price of the Vitamix. You need to know that it's worth it, there is nothing like it, and there are several ways to buy one. You can purchase one through QVC for payments, buy one on a credit plan, or take the plunge and purchase one. However you decide to pay for it, you should know that it's worth the price- whichever you decide to get.

The Vitamix is backed by a seven year warranty and the blades are meant to last a lifetime. they are laser cut from solid stainless steel. All Vitamix models will allow for healthy, restaurant-quality family meal preparation capabilities for: hot soups, frozen desserts, smoothies, juices, milks, nut butters, dough, batters, purées, dressings, dips and spreads. If you've ever been at a SAMS or a COSTCO or a grocery store that gives you a little show about how the Vitamix works, you should stay and watch it. It can make hot soup one minute and then ice cream the next- all out of wonderful fresh ingredients.


What Can A Vitamix Do?

Basically- It Can Do Anything..

Vitamix is designed to be able to blend anything and everything, just the way you want it. If you are worried that it can't take frozen, hard substances- no fear. 30 seconds and you're solid frozen fruit is sorbet- or add milk it's ice cream- or water or juice and it's a smoothie. I personally just throw ingredients in there and in about a minute, I have a beautiful smoothie ready to drink. Or, sometimes I throw frozen fruit and a little water and make delicious ice cream. It works quicker than anything I've ever used, the results are perfect, and the machine has no bounds to what it can make. I will get to how I lost the weight in a moment. I just want to reiterate that you can throw whatever you want into this machine and you'll have great results. Peanuts make delicious peanut butter in no time. Some broccoli, cheese and milk and a little garlic and a sprinkle of pepper make a piping hot, fresh broccoli and cheddar soup. Once you get used to the Vitamix and comfortable with it, there are no limits to what you'll feel comfortable making. Soak some chick peas and throw them in the next day with a couple of cloves of garlic and presto!- you have delicious hummus. There is nothing you can't do with a Vitamix in minutes, which may take you hours to make without one!

One of My Favourites- Banana Strawberry Smoothie

So Simple- It's Ridiculous!

This banana strawberry smoothie is very simple to make.

1) Buy fresh strawberries and freeze them or

Easier Yet:

2) But frozen strawberries with no sugar added- you can get them in the frozen fruit department in any store.

One Banana will do the trick.

Throw about a cup of frozen strawberries in the Vitamix and a banana. Add about a quarter cup of water. Turn it to 30 seconds on high. Push the berries down with your want and you should have a frozen, delicious ultra low high quality delicious smoothie in less than a minute. Pour it into your cup (I like the plastic cups with the straws that are washable like the ones at Starbucks), and that can be your breakfast, or a snack!

Triple Berry Smoothie

Triple Berry Smoothie Recipe- Very Easy

Buy a bag of frozen blackberry/raspberry/blueberry mix from the frozen fruit section of your grocery store. SAMS has them in bulk for very little money.

I always use strawberries as well.

Put a cup of the frozen berries and then a few frozen strawberries in the Vitamix.

Pour in about 1/4 cup of Orange Juice.

Set to 30 second and blend with wand.

Your smoothie is ready to take and drink for any meal! Delicious!

Frozen Pineapple-Mango Smoothie

Recipe for Pineapple/Mango Smoothie

Buy a couple of Mangoes and cut them into slices. I normally buy them pre-sliced but this is cheating. :) Freeze them

Buy pineapple spears. You can spear your own pineapple of course, but I never have the time!

Throw some ice, frozen mango and fresh pineapple in the Vitamix. No need to add any water, the pineapple makes the smoothie very juicy.

Blend for 30 seconds and drink!

Recipe For Orange Smoothie (Orange Julius)

I like to use clementines or cuties. I normally put 5 or 6 in the Vitamix with a cup of ice cubes.

Blend for 30 seconds, pour and drink!

If you want a good treat, you can add flavoured alcohol to any of these smoothies as well of course, but I am sure we can all figure out what we like and don't like. Adding a little vodka to this Orange Smoothie makes a great frozen screwdriver.. but I digress

Hot Broccoli Cheddar Soup

Recipe for the Broccoli/Cheddar Soup

Buy a fresh head of broccoli and cut it up just like if you were going to serve it to dip.

Throw it in the Vitamix.

Buy a bag of shredded cheddar cheese. I like it sharp, but whatever your preference is will work. Put half of the bag in the Vitamix.

Pour a cup and a half or two cups (depending how much you want) into the Vitamix.

Add salt/seasonings for taste.

Set the Vitamix to 7 minutes. Go do something else.

7 minutes later you will have delicious, piping hot soup that tastes like it was made at a restaurant.

Cheddar and Cauliflower Soup

Recipe for Cheddar and Cauliflower Soup

Buy a head of cauliflower. Cut it up into pieces and put some in the Vitamix.

Put a half bag of shredded cheddar cheese in the Vitamix (sharp, mild- whatever you like)

I like putting garlic cloves in this soup too.

Add salt/pepper, spices

Turn on Vitamix for 7 minutes and you'll have fresh, piping hot soup! Delicious!

Ok- Enough with the Recipes, How I Lost the Weight!

How I lost the weight:

I find that the only way I personally can lose weight is to follow a specific diet. I have tried the 'points' system (works well, but for ME, too easy to cheat), and I have tried other diets that allow you to 'eat what you want.' I think those are a great theoretical concept and they work for millions, but for me- I don't have that kind of will power.

First I went and bought fresh chicken breasts from SAMS and each Sunday I would cook them all. I made sure to eat two a day, and I used different bar-b-que sauces and sometimes other non fatty sauces for flavour. I just heated them up and ate them for dinner.

So I compiled a schedule of smoothies and soups I would eat for the week. I tried to switch it up, but sometimes I did substitute one smoothie for another, or one soup for another.

Monday:

Breakfast: Strawberry/Banana Smoothie

Lunch: Broccoli Cheddar Soup

Dinner: Two chicken breasts

Before bed: Berry Smoothie (I would often not mix these to 'Smoothie Consistency,' and eat it in ice cream texture)

Tuesday:

Breakfast: Orange Julius

Lunch: Broccoli Cheddar Soup

Dinner: Two Chicken Breasts

Snack: Pineapple/Mango Smoothie (whatever consistency)

Wednesday:

Breakfast: Pineapple/Mango Smoothie

Lunch: Cauliflower/Cheddar Soup

Dinner: Two Chicken Breasts

Snack: Orange Julius

Thursday:

Breakfast: Berry Smoothie

Lunch: Cauliflower/Cheddar Soup

Dinner: Two Chicken Breasts

Snack: Banana/Strawberry Smoothie

Friday:

Breakfast: Pineapple/Mango Smoothie

Lunch: Asparagus Soup

Dinner: Two Chicken Breasts

Snack: Berry Smoothie

Saturday:

Breakfast: Orange Julius

Lunch: Asparagus Soup

Dinner: Broccoli/Cauliflower Soup

Snack: Berry Smoothie

Sunday:

Breakfast: Banana and Strawberry Smoothie

Lunch: Two Chicken Breasts

Dinner: Asparagus Soup

Snack: Berry Smoothie (I normally did ice cream consistency on Sundays)

**Homemade hummus for snack at any time I felt I was starving. I used cucumbers and dipped them in the hummus



Vitamins

Of course, when you're eating fruits and vegetables, you are getting a lot of your vitamins. However, I still maintained my vitamin regime as I do every day. What I take is the following, and your dietary needs may be different:

Fish Oil

Vitamin B Complex

Vitamin E

Vitamin D

Exercise

Of course- you have to move!

I use the Microsoft Arm Bracelet pictured above. I use it to monitor my steps, my heart rate, my exercise and my sleep. It's a little pricier than a lot of the trackers like fitbits, but it works well, it has a great reviews, and I like it because it syncs up with my phone and it vibrates whenever I get a call- and the caller ID shows as does a text message on the screen. I can also see if I have received an email. It makes things easy for a person who loses her phone all the time, and it fits much better than the Nike wrist band in my opinion.

I don't and still do not have much time to exercise but I did try to walk. I took stairs, made sure to move at work, and took at least 30 minutes a day to walk my dog. When you wear one of these wrist bands it becomes a challenge to get your steps in, so I tried to take the 'long way around' as much as possible.

In Conclusion

It took me only four weeks to drop 20 pounds. I've managed to keep it off but I would like to lose some more. I know that if I follow the diet above, I am getting all of my nutrient needs and I am also going to lose more weight.

I love my Vitamix. It was the best decision I ever made. I DO have a Breville Juicer too which I use quite often, just for juices. I could write a whole new hub on the juicer and the benefits alone. Take care, and stay healthy!
