Importance of Work–Nothing is For Free

Updated on November 7, 2012

If someone provides you all essentials that sustain life and the amount of money you have been dreaming to have all along on a condition that each day you remain in the house without doing any work for the rest of your life, will you agree? I asked my friend this question and she said that life won't make any meaning. I wanted to know more details so I pressed her to elaborate her answer and here is what she had to say, "I may be having money and all the essential needs but I will be incomplete as a human being since I will be lacking inner joy that work brings. When I work, I have a purpose unlike staying in the house doing nothing. It is by working that I'm saved from boredom and dullness."

What about you?

I'm a Christian so I trace the origin of work by referring to the book of Genesis that is found in the Holy Bible. According to this book, God started working by creating the world and the heavens. He appreciated his work. All God had created He saw it as being good. God had also to rest. Therefore, work and resting was part of God's plan.

After creating Adam, God put him in the Garden of Eden so as to tend it and give names to animals. Working in the Garden of Eden was the first job assigned by God to man. God later on created Eve to help Adam. Eve together with Adam worked in the Garden of Eden. Till to this point, work was good, enjoyable and there were no any obstacles in performing work.

It is only after the fall of man that God's plan changed, He cursed man to toil and sweat in order to eat. This means that in order for us to sustain our lives, we must use our mental and physical effort in performing activities that will bring about production of food or earn us income.

Try Again And Again–Nothing is for Free

There are times we end up failing in attaining the desired level of performance that we are expecting no matter how hard we work. Have you ever failed to attain a goal in spite of you doing everything that it takes to achieve it? Why do some people in spite of working efficiently end up not achieving the desired results? Is this one of the things that makes life to be unfair to some of us?

Failure is there in life and when we fail we are supposed to try again and again till we succeed. This means that we should not give up working on something that we have failed in but we should try doing it again by making some changes. Keep on working even harder than before but in a way that is rational.

From today acknowledge that nothing comes easily and for free. For something to happen there must be someone working on it and that person encounters challenges to achieve it.

I have come to a conclusion that there is nothing for free. The word free is being misused by many people. Why? The thing you declare as having received for free, (or someone else is offering it for free) it is not absolutely for free.

It came to existence as a result of someone somewhere putting mental and physical effort in creating it. This means that someone had to really work hard for the thing you refer as being for free.

"Download a free e-book."

It is not absolutely for free.

The author of this book put a lot of mental effort and physical energy writing it, period!"

The Book of Ecclesiastes

Have you read the whole book of Ecclesiastes thoroughly? This is one of the books of the Holy Bible that talks about human activities and desires. It has life experiences on things that man does with the main aim of attaining happiness. It encourages and discourages us at the same time. Due to some of its verses being rigorously hopeless you may end up disliking it, but that is the truth and some people don't want to hear the truth because it hurts.

King Solomon being the wisest man, he concluded that the activities God had given people to busy themselves with are unpleasant.

Ecclesiastes 1:12 "I, the Teacher, when king over Israel in Jerusalem, 13 applied my mind to seek and to search out by wisdom all that is done under heaven; it is an unhappy business that God has given to human beings to be busy with."

Ecclesiastes 2:17 "So I hated life, because what is done under the sun was grievous to me; for all is vanity and a chasing after wind."

We are always competing with one another. We envy others and we want to be like them. This makes us to work so as to be in the same level with them or to excel more than them. Ecclesiastes 4:4 "Then I saw that all toil and all skill in work come from one person's envy of another. This also is vanity and a chasing after wind."

There are things that made King Solomon to hate life. He has mentioned these things in the book of Ecclesiastes such as:

1.) He found out all he had done was vanity.

2.) All things according to him were wearisome.

3.) For him nothing seemed to be new under the sun. The things happening had already happened.

4.) People who have passed on are not remembered by new generation.

5.) All that is done is unhappy business that God had given man to busy himself with.

6.) Same fate befalls people who are wise and those who are fools.

7.) He hated his toil since one day he will have to leave it to others whom he doesn't know if they will be wise or foolish.

Ecclesiastes 2:11 "Then I considered all that my hands had done and the toil I had spent in doing it, and again, all was vanity and a chasing after wind, and there was nothing to be gained under the sun. 20 So I turned and gave my heart up to despair concerning all the toil of my labours under the sun, 21 because sometimes one who has toiled with wisdom and knowledge and skill must leave all to be enjoyed by another who did not toil for it…"

All these verses discourage us but the same book of Ecclesiastes encourages us to work to our best level of performance (read Ecclesiastes 9:10). It goes farther encouraging us to be happy and enjoy the fruits of our work. Ecclesiastes 3:13 "moreover, it is God's gift that all should eat and drink and take pleasure in all their toil. 22 So I saw that there is nothing better than that all should enjoy their work, for that is their lot; who can bring them to see what will be after them?"

Do you enjoy doing your work?

Importance of Work

1.) Work makes you to have a purpose in your life. Your mind is peaceful when you have a purpose.

2.) The only way for you to earn a living is by working.

3.) Work will make you not to be idle. You will not do things that cause self-destruction as a result of being idle. You won’t complain that time is moving too slow or the day being too long since you will be busy and not idle.

4.) Work will make you to be healthy both physically and mentally. There will be no a lot of energy that is not utilized and this will not cause disorders.

5.) It is by working that you will be able to progress in life. You will improve your skills, acquire more knowledge and assets.
