Kerala home remedies - Traditional Kerala tips for good health

Sneezing problem

If you are disturbed by sneezing problem, try this remedy. Eat a little amount of carom seeds (ajwain, ayamodakam or vomam in Indian languages) with jaggery daily. Sneezing problem will disappear

Diarrhea or loose motion

Have ginger juice (ginger extract without adding water) with half teaspoon of powdered asafetida. Drinking tea (strong decoction) with one full lemon juice added to it will make diarrhea go off. This is the best remedy for diarrhea. Arrowroot porridge is also a good remedy for diarrhea.

Fever

If fever is just starting, you can drink a glass full of warm water with lemon juice added to it (juice of a full lemon). This would cleanse the body and cure fever. Otherwise drink rasam (a south Indian drink). I will share the rasam recipe below.

Cough, cold and running nose

Have rasam. Rasam can be made easily. Boil water, add cumin seeds (1 teaspoon), black pepper (2 teaspoon) and garlic (1 pod). Add ginger pieces and pudina leaves. Let it boil for 10 minutes. Now add tamarind paste. Let it boil. Rasam for fever and cough is remedy. Have this drink for 3 days. Cough cold and throat pain will go off.

Indigestion

Have ginger juice and garlic juice together. Make a decoction of ajwain (carom seeds), dry ginger and asafetida and drink.

For body itching due to allergy

Have ginger juice with sugar. Applying turmeric paste would also help

For bleeding

If babies fall down and break their lips (for inner lips also) apply sugar. Sugar would help clot blood and avoid excess bleeding.

Gas trouble

Eat fennel seeds, cumin seeds and garlic cloves. Gas will come out.

For coarse voice and ear problems

Have ginger with jaggery. Make a paste of cumin seeds and eat with honey.

For excess phlegm and mucus

Make a mix of shallot juice, ginger juice and honey. Having this daily would reduce phlegm

Canker sore or mouth ulcer

Drink buttermilk with turmeric and curry leaves added to it. Eat curd.

Excess bleeding in menstruation

Boil carom seeds in water and add jaggery to it. This drink (kashayam in Malayalam) would help stabilize menstruation bleeding.

For poisonous insect bite

Applying turmeric powder paste is found to help insect bites. Apply turmeric paste to the wound. Turmeric can wash away the poison in the wound.

Stomach worms

Eat papaya in empty stomach daily. Also eat cooked raw papaya daily for 1 week. Mix little amount of asafetida in warm water and drink. Do this for 3 days.

For a good sleep (for sleeping problems, sleeplessness)

Drink sweetened milk before going to bed. Also wash your feet and apply little butter on feet. You will get good sleep.

For loss of appetite

Have little amount of nutmeg paste with honey. Drink carom decoction (carom seeds boiled in water)

Acute paronychia

Acute paronychia is a disease that affects finger tip. There would come swelling and redness in finger tip, around the nails. It is very painful and can last for few weeks. There is a home remedy for this problem. Put the affected finger finger in one full lemon. Make a hole in lemon and insert the finger into it. Keep it for long time (during night also you can do this). This disease that affects finger will go off with this remedy

For Head Lice

Put the leaves of holy basil in your pillow. Head lice would be eliminated. Applying curry leaves paste in scalp and hair would also help.

For healthy teeth

Put little amount of sesame seed paste in hot water and clean mouth using this water. You can also add nutmeg paste or clove paste to hot water and clean mouth.

For shiny skin

Take away soap from your bathroom. Rather use gram flour (Bengal gram flour) (kadalamavu in Malayalam and tamil) or green gram flour (payuru podi in Malayalam) to clean body. Your skin will glow. Use this for children. They will retain their smooth skin as they grow up if they use these powders for body wash. Always take bath in warm water (not hot water). But wash hair only in cool water. Washing hair in hot water will trigger hair loss and premature hair graying.

Throat pain and cold

Apply mustard oil in neck (throat area). Eat shallots with jaggery. Throat pain will go off.
