Important Information About Natural Skin Care For Dermatitis

Updated on November 19, 2011

Natural skin care for dermatitis can be helpful for persons that suffer from eczema and other similar conditions. The condition often leads to dryness, a red rash and itching. While not contagious, the condition is often passed from one generation to another. One of the best methods of preventing the condition in children is for the mom to breastfeed for the first six to eight weeks of the child's life. This can pass on some of the immunity that the mother has developed to the child.

Keep moisturized. It is important to keep the body hydrated by proper use of bathing and moisturizing creams. Baths should be very short, lasting only three to five minutes and in lukewarm water. Avoid the use of shower gels and bath oils. Use a gentle and balanced soap only on the feet, underarms and groin regularly. Be sure to moisturize before drying off completely.

There are irritants that can aggravate the condition. These include many harsh soaps as well as perfumes. Additionally, all clothing and bedding should be soft and not scratchy. It is important to choose hypoallergenic detergents for the laundry to prevent further irritation.

Be aware of and avoid allergens. These may include dust, foods and animal dander. Some foods that may cause problems include peanuts, soy, fish, milk, wheat and eggs. If help is needed to determine the specific allergen a medical practitioner may be able to help.

It is important that persons with this condition avoid scratching if at all possible. One way to do this is to keep the nails trimmed short and filed smooth. This prevents damage to the surface of the body from scratching. If there is an area that is a particular problem, keep it covered with a protective dressing, especially when sleeping. Babies may need cotton socks over their hands to stop scratching.

While exposing the area to sunlight may help, too much sun can be harmful. Always avoid sunburn and its drying effect on the body. In addition, becoming overheated or sweating may irritate the condition. Choose an appropriate sunscreen to prevent burns and to moisturize, but one that is non-irritating. Use of the right product is often the key to preventing cancer and burns. In addition, if the person will be in the sun for extended periods, he or she should wear a hat and long sleeves.

There are many different kinds of natural skin care for dermatitis. Not all may be helpful in every case. Make sure that the most effective remedies are used. If one of the products increases the problem, it is important that it be avoided. With proper precautions, it is often possible to avoid many of the outbreaks that can often be painful.
