Is Arthritis Hereditary?

The short answer is mostly no. The part that your genes play in whether you develop of suffer from the condition depends on the type of arthritis and your genetic make-up but genetic make-up plays a very small role in developing arthritis in general.

The truth is that arthritis is a multi-factoral disease. In other words, the degree of arthritis, the type of arthritis and whether you even develop the disease depends on a number of different factors including genetics, environment, diet, exercise and your unique set of circumstances.

A lot of studies to determine whether Arthritis is genetic have been conducted on identical twins. By studying identical twins geneticists are able to more accurately study and predict whether a condition is genetic and what the chances are of a person developing the condition assuming they have the right genetic structure.

In terms of rheumatoid arthritis, the incidence of the condition based solely on genetic reasons is very low. If you have the gene, there is in fact only a 0.8% chance of developing the disease. Osteoarthritis is a little different, with the chances of developing the condition being a lot higher.

So the bad news is that in most cases, you can't blame your bad genes for developing the condition. But the bad news is actually good news in disguise. Because if the disease were purely genetic, you would have no control over the disease, but it isn't and environment and foods pay a big role in the condition. And you can choose to control environment to a certain extent and you can definitely choose what you eat.

Diet is One of the Major Causes of Arthritis

The fact is that diet plays a crucial role in the development of arthritis and in the treatment of arthritis.

Generally arthritis is caused and exacerbated by an increase in inflammation within the body. It is your liver's job to remove toxins from the blood and body but when the liver has been overloaded, the body builds up toxins and these toxins are often the cause of inflammation. Inflammation is the red swollen joints you experience in arthritis and you need to eat foods that support the liver and help to fight the inflammation as well as cutting down on the inflammatory foods that you are eat.

In terms of inflammatory foods, the biggest culprits for causing inflammation include:

  • Processed and Fried Foods
    In a study done by the School of Medicine in Mount Sanai, researchers proved that cutting down on processed foods helped restore health and reduce inflammation, irrespective of age and previous health status. Inflammation is what causes the swelling and pain so by cutting down on fried foods and processed foods, you will automatically see an improvement in your arthritis symptoms
  • Cut out Sugar and cut down carbs
    There is more and more research everyday that proves that refined carbohydrates and sugars cause arthritis and that they exacerbate or increase inflammation within the body. Cutting down on refined carbs and cutting out the hidden sugars in your food can help you improve your symptoms.
  • Dairy products
    Some dairy products have been linked to an increase in inflammation. Cutting down your consumption of dairy may therefore help the body cope with the amount of inflammation
  • Smoking and Alcohol
    Excessive consumption of alcohol and smoking have also been linked to increased inflammation

Herbs and Foods for Arthritis

Arthritis does not need to be a life sentence. The good news is that by avoiding the foods that cause inflammation and by adding foods that support the liver, decrease inflammation and help the body get rid of toxins, your symptoms and pain as a result of arthritis can be substantially reduced.

Foods that have a scientific basis for the reduction of inflammation include:

  • Turmeric
  • Ginger
  • Cinnamon

Turmeric for Arthritis
Turmeric is arguably the most studied spice in terms of arthritis. The results of adding turmeric or curcumin - the scientific name for turmeric - to the diet are nothing short of astounding. In one study turmeric was tested along with a common non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug and the study found that patients who took curcumin had better results and less pain than those who did not. One of the best ways to add turmeric to your diet is by making golden milk. There is a video later in the article on how you can make golden milk.

Ginger for Arthritis
Another herb that has showed fantastic results in the reduction of pain and inflammation is ginger. In a study published in the Journal of Arthritis, researchers compared with an active ingredient in certain drugs. The ginger was shown to be as effective at curbing inflammation as the drug. We will add a recipe for ginger tea at the end of this article.

Cinnamon and Honey for Arthritis
There has been a lot about cinnamon and honey for arthritis. Although there are no direct studies for cinnamon and arthritis, cinnamon is a powerful anti-inflammatory and it regulates blood sugar so it regulates one of the things that cause arthritis in the first place, so it is not surprising that some people have found the addition of cinnamon helpful in reducing the symptoms of arthritis

Herbs and Foods are Medication

Hippocrates said, "Let food be thy medicine and medicine thy food." The important thing to realize about diet and food and spices is that they are potentially medicine and it is therefore important to discuss any major dietary changes with your physician. You should not treat herbs and spices like they have no effect and eat disproportionate amount of any herb or spice. The same goes for supplements. You should always check with your doctor before you start taking new supplements to make sure they are safe for you depending on the medication you are on.

That being said, more and more people are realizing that prevention is better than cure and a lot of our modern diseases are as a result of poor dietary choices and most can be reversed or cured by making the proper dietary changes you need.

Your body is built to be healthy and to take care of itself. All it needs from you is a little love, the right food and for you to pay attention when your body talks - and it talks in terms of symptoms.

How to Make Golden Milk

Golden Milk

Turmeric is an amazing spice. More and more research is showing that Turmeric is a potent anti-inflammatory and that it even has powerful anti-cancer properties.

One of the best ways I have found to add turmeric to your daily diet is by drinking golden milk. Essentially golden milk is made by creating a paste of turmeric and water and then adding a teaspoon or two of the paste to a glass or almond milk or your choice of milk every morning.

As you can see, genes play a very small part in developing and progressive arthritis. And you can control your diet and the other factors that affect your pain and arthritis.
