Is Fibromyalgia interfering with your sex life?

Updated on November 11, 2013

do you have low libido?

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterized by widespread pain, fatigue and depression. There is no known cause for fibromyalgia. The pain, fatigue and depression caused from fibromyalgia can cause a decrease in energy level, activity level and a decreased libido. Patients with fibromyalgia are generally so fatigued and painful at the end of the day that they don't even feel like having sexual relations with their partners. How can we tell if the cause of our low libido is caused by the symptoms of fibromyalgia or some other problem?

Check your medications:

Your prescription medications may be a cause of decreased libido. Fibromyalgia and the depression associated with it are usually treated with SSRI antidepressants. SSRI's have been known to play a big role in depressing ones libido. Talk to your doctor if you are taking SSRI antidepressants.

Wellbutrin is a non-SSRI antidepressant that can increase your libido. Wellbutrin can be an alternative in the treatment of depression of fibromyalgia.

Decrease the pain:

Pain is the most common complaint of fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia can cause pain all over, including the vaginal area, and cause sex to be uncomfortable. The pain of fibromyalgia can cause your libido to be decreased.

Talk to your doctor about your decreased libido and the pain you are having. He may do some further testing to find out if there are any other problems causing sexual pain. Your doctor may also prescribe a pain medication to help you with the pain.

The pain may also be caused from not properly lubricating before intercourse. Make sure you use a water based lubricant liberally before having sexual relations.

Fatigue is common:

Fatigue is a frequent complaint of fibromyalgia sufferers and also a cause of low libido. The daily stress of being in pain itself can be the cause of fatigue. Fibromyalgia fatigue can be so severe that sex is the last thing on your mind after a busy day, all you want to do is sleep.

Talk to your doctor about fatigue. There are a few prescription medications that can help with fatigue. Also try taking a nap during the day. Daily naps have been shown to help the fatigue of fibromyalgia.

Depression can be treated:

Depression is common in people with fibromyalgia. The constant pain and fatigue along with the many other symptoms can cause a person with fibromyalgia to experience depression. Depression can be caused directly from low libido. Depression can also be caused from low body image, which can also cause low libido.

The catch 22 is that antidepressants, the medications that cause low libido, are frequently prescribed for depression, which also causes low libido. Have your doctor check your medications. Wellbutrin is an antidepressant that doesn't have a side effect of lowering libido.

So you can see how the many symptoms of fibromyalgia can cause decreased libido. It seems that treating one thing that causes low libido actually will be the cause of another thing causing low libido, all leading back to fibromyalgia.

Be open about symptoms:

The best thing that a fibromyalgia person can do for their low libido is talk to their doctor about the problem. Also openness with your spouse can help them understand and possibly help in increasing your libido. Sometimes open communication with your spouse can help you both come up with some alternatives to help your sex life and low libido.

Fibromyalgia and all of the symptoms associated with this painful disorder can cause low libido directly and indirectly, but if you are persistent in getting help for this, you can eventually find a treatment that will help your libido increase.
