How to Get Your Body in an Alkaline State by Avoiding Acidic Foods

Updated on May 9, 2016
Source

Why did I start testing my pH?

One of the many things I discovered during my quest to build a bionic immune system is that cancer flourishes in an acidic environment. Studies have shown that in a pH slightly above 7.4, cancer cells become dormant - and at a pH of 8.5 cancer cells will die while healthy cells will live. Maintaining the proper pH balance is also vital to preventing many other diseases and for general health. Also, people state that they feel physically and mentally better when their body is more alkaline. After dealing with ovarian cancer and getting through chemotherapy, I added maintaining the pH balance of my body to my list of healthy goals, and became determined to keep my body alkaline at all times.

Human blood must remain in a very narrow pH range (7.35-7.45) under all circumstances. If the pH ever varies from this range, cells stop functioning to the point of causing coma and death. Fortunately the body has mechanisms in place that keep the pH in this safe range. One such mechanism is to extract alkaline minerals such as sodium, potassium, zinc, iron, and calcium from tissues, organs, bones, ligaments, and muscles. This keeps the blood pH stable but is not good for general health since the levels of these vital minerals can be lowered to an unhealthy degree. Moreover, when the body tissue becomes even somewhat acidic within the allowed range it creates a burden on the liver, kidneys, and heart and therefore stresses every cell in the body. Acid-forming foods and stress create an acid residue in the tissues and organs that builds up over time and result in what people refer to as having an acidic body. Such a condition is a breeding ground for bacteria, viruses, and cancer. Fortunately there are many ways to completely reverse this problem, but only if you are aware of it. Thus it is important to test your body for excess acidity.

Dangers of pH Imbalance in the Body

As mentioned above, the risks of having an acidic pH are numerous:

  1. The body is unable to properly absorb vitamins, minerals, and supplements
  2. Cardiovascular problems can result.
  3. Causes immune deficiency.
  4. Stressed liver function.
  5. Low energy.
  6. Tumor growth.
  7. Yeast fungal/overgrowth.
  8. Can contribute to rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, lupus, tuberculosis, osteoporosis, and high blood pressure.
  9. Lowers body's ability to repair damaged cells.
  10. Speeds up the aging process and makes a person look and feel older

How Do you Test the pH Balance in Your Body?

The pH scale ranges from 0 (highest acidic) to 14 (highest alkaline). A pH of 7 is considered neutral. The goal is to reach a reading higher than 7. The easiest way to test the PH is with a urine or saliva test that can be purchased at most pharmacies or health food stores. When using the saliva test make sure you don't eat or brush your teeth 30 minutes prior to the test, and make sure to swallow a few times before testing. The urine test is generally lower in the morning and gets higher in the evening so try to test twice a day. Read the instructions and match the results to the chart on the container. Be aware that the results can change throughout the day for any test, so measure it once in the morning and once in the evening and look for an overall trend.

How Do you Create a Perfect pH?

If you found the results from the urine test or saliva test were not optimal, the good news is that you can completely alter your body's pH by making a few simple changes.

  • Eliminate acidic beverages such as soda, alcohol, coffee, processed fruit drinks, and energy drinks.
  • Eat foods that are alkaline forming. It is of no surprise that this requires a diet with a heavy concentration of fruits and vegetables and little or no processed foods. Examples of alkaline forming foods are raw spinach, figs, mangoes, and almonds. Some examples of acidic forming foods are alcohol, caffeine, poultry, pasta, and cranberries. Here is a comprehensive list of foods to eat and foods to avoid.

Source
  • Reduce stress. The hormones from stress can result in acid reactions in the body. Therefore, reducing stress is vital even if simply by taking ten deep breaths on a daily basis.
  • Reduce toxic overload by changing your cosmetics and personal care products. Toxins create acidic reactions in the body so use personal care products and cosmetics that don't contain toxins. They are a challenge to find but are out there.

The goal is to eat a diet that is mostly alkaline so you have to be realistic but not perfect. Many people try to eat 80% alkaline. I use cranberry juice in my green smoothie and eat chick peas which are both acid forming but the rest of my diet is mostly alkaline. My urine consistently tests as very alkaline according to the chart (dark blue for my strips). How alkaline is your body? It takes only a few minutes to find out. Cheers to good health!!

      Hi Khalif,

Thank you for the more detailed scientific explanation. My emphasis was on the practical application but the reasoning behind it is also interesting. Thank you so much for reading and taking the time to comment.

Hi, can ya add more deeper info that why Alkaline and Acide is important and it is two words, depsite of many different drinks, foods, so it is all about balance of two. So, those two is connect to atom, as atom is same everywhere, and that atom has electrons pair or un-pair, single electrons or couple electrons, which it is two, as single or couple, so it is an exchange of electrons that electrons break apart to become ion, or electron bonds to different molecules so form new molecule. So, base what 'Raul Diego Nelson Falch' says so there is ion, which ion is connect to atom. So, it is not just food, but electrons exchange in connect to Alkaline and Acide, so how to those two work? It is because too much ratio of electrons of one molecule to different molecule of low electron? Let say there is 5 eletron as one molecule to 4 eletron as second molecule, so both bond as stable or unstable, stable which it is Alkaline that build up, or unstable which acide that break down. I am sure at the most foundation there is number involve which just two things or one thing is different action of one, which it is good or bad, which to understand the process at deep level is not complex, but there is many simple that makes it complex.

So, all foods is really eletrons exchange which electrons produce electricty which there is energy, heat energy. If there is alot of eletrons as total that means it is more more heat to destroy which it is Acide or so?

So, is the most energy living is high Alkaline that give you energy, so lemon drink give you highest energy? Lowest Eletrons bond? I am guessing, but it is good to have more foundation understand than just Alkaline and Acide.

      Hi Anil,

I'm sorry you are dealing with a health challenge. Really focus on eating alkaline forming foods only and check your PH frequently but be patient. It can take a few weeks to become alkaline and you have to check it several times during the day.

When you digest food, your body makes carbon dioxide as a waste product in the form of gas. Your blood carries this gas to your lungs. You exhale it and breathe in oxygen thousands of times a day. .However, most carbon dioxide is transported as bicarbonate. As blood flows through the tissues, carbon dioxide diffuses into red blood cells, where it is converted into bicarbonate. ... Additionally, hydrogen ion is released from hemoglobin, thus allowing oxygen to bind to hemoglobin as blood flows through the lungs. (The kidneys help maintain the acid–base balance by excreting hydrogen ions into the urine and reabsorbing bicarbonate from the urine.)

Hi vocalcoach, Your comment made my day! It takes months to see the true results and benefits and I'm impressed that you have been so dedicated. Doctors are quick to prescribe medication but a change in diet will lead to a reduction in inflammation and that helps with so many things including things people didn't even realize they had. The increased energy levels makes it so worth it. I'm wishing you continued success!

      Hi Marilyn,

It sounds like you have made some really positive changes in your diet and they are effective! It requires a lot of trial and error. If your routine is working I would stay with it. It would be helpful to get some test trips to test your alkalinity and overall health. It takes seconds to test it. Thank you so much for the comment and best of luck for continued success with IBS and acid reflux.

Wow, thanks for the very informative article. I have read about pH levels in the past but did not test mine. Will do today. I have severe IBS and acid reflux. Started eating gluten and dairy free over a year ago and am much better. I take my probiotic with warm lemon water, Manuka honey and 1 tsp. of Natural Calm every morning. Do you know if that is a good routine. I rarely have acid reflux now.

That's great that you are determined to reduce inflammation because that can reverse many diseases such as the ones you have. I highly recommend reading Joel Fuhrman's book "Eat ti Live" to assist with dietary changes. When you test your ph make sure you are well hydrated because that seems to make a difference. Great article! I myself healed my own cancer using good alkaline whole foods, fruit and vegetables, water, juicing, fasting, fresh air, exercise and sunshine.

No doubt keeping my body alkaline was a major factor in my healing process. As you know Dr Otto Warburg proved back in 1939 that cancer cannot survive in an alkaline body.

There really are clues out there for everyone to see. Sadly with the medical profession and big pharma involved there are a whole lot of lies being constantly replayed through social media and the print press/tv. Big money talks.

I don't go near a doctor or hospital these days. They are good for emergencies only in my opinion.

Good healthy preferably organic fare and a healthy lifestyle will keep you away from them.

I made a short little video here about my favourite alkaline foods. You can watch it here. Very informative. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9V0XMK3w59Y

Lots of green vegetables and steer clear of very acidic foods like soft drinks, ice cream and sugar full stop! Not good for your body in any way shape or form. Hope you like my comment and look forward to reading more of your articles, kind regards, Kevin

No, listen to me. That is a false myth. I am very epcreienxed with this. Blood pH doesn't change. I have been dealing with this false info from people for years. I am also the only one out of all of them that has been able to help people stop their pains from cancer other degenerative disease. I understand science. Myth can be repeated 1000 s of times on the internet, but facts remain. Lemons are void of the alkalizing minerals. Protein breakdown from acids make unhealthy alkaline ammonia.

      Hi DuchessofDelMar,

The alkaline diet is based upon giving up foods that are acid forming rather does than acidic. Lemon juice is acidic but not acid forming in the body and therefore alkaline. I am in no way perfect with my diet either but just get back on track if I slip up. PH strips are a great way to determine if your body is more alkaline. The alkaline diet reduces overall inflammation and if you are worried about the lemon juice eat other alkaline food to achieve the result. I am happy you see the connection between diet and health issues since many doctors are not aware of this. It is important to take charge of your own health and definitely requires a little trial and error. Thanks for the comment and wishing you the best of luck and good health!!

I'm a bit confused about something and would so appreciate your help I shaking this out. I have interstitial cystitis , the first line of dense is to stick to the IC diet which cuts out a variety of foods but mostly foods that are acidic, sour, spicy, or processed. The only "safe" fruits are blueberries and pears (yet your chart shows blueberries as acidic) and lemon, orange, indeed all citrus is positively verboten. I have heard many times that lemon juice alkalizes when it is in the body- I don't get it. I'm terrified to try even a sip of orange juice (it has caused me great pain in the past) but am I avoiding the wrong things???

Recently I switched to a mostly paleo/primal diet, I have my hiccups and days when ice cream calls my name too loudly but I have certainly am a tremendous overhaul to my diet with very positive results for my pain levels. Just wondering if I should be trying lemon now too? Any idea why we can't have lemon if it is alkalinizing? Is it still acidic when it makes it to your bladder or perhaps the waste part of lemon juice is acid and therefore it's contribution to your pee is acidic- causing pain for someone who has a weak bladder lining, ulcers in their bladder, inflammation etc?

barbergirl28...I completely understand the need to just live a little! It takes enough discipline to maintain a good weight and exercise and all other responsibilities. It's worth just checking out and maybe adding more alkaline foods to the diet. Thanks so much for your comment and especially for sharing!!

healthylife2, it is imperative that our body alkalinity is kept to arounfd the blood of pH. Acidity does contribute to a lot of health problems, in fact all for practical purposes. It is said that our diet must be 80% alkaline and 20% acidic.

I'm going to include a link to this wonderful and useful hub in my hub, Healthy Water-The Benefits Of Alkaline Water. I hope its okay with you.

Voting this up and useful and sharing.

I knew alkaline was a good state, but I didn't realize we could test our own ph levels. This hub may save some lives. Excellent stuff!

I have heard a lot of people doing this for their health. I am not so sure I can hold that kind of discipline with my eating, but now I am curious about what my body is at. I should get some of those tester strips! :) Great information!

Hi Doodlehead! Good idea and many people follow an 80% alkaline diet with a lot of success. The important thing is to use the ph strips to test how your body responds to the diet.

@Peggy W...Many people follow a plan that requires 80% of their food to be alkaline and they are able to still keep their body alkaline. Blueberries are healthy and loaded with antioxidants so enjoy. I often add berries to my smoothies but the rest of it contains vegetables that are highly alkaline.Just try to make sure 80% of your diet is alkaline. The best way to test is to use the ph test strips. Thanks so much for the comment and I really appreciate you sharing this!

Peggy W---you could balance off the blueberries with FIJI water which is alkaline.

I had no idea that blueberries were so high in acid! Just had a blueberry smoothie for breakfast thinking that it was so healthy. Will definitely keep this information in mind and get some test strips. I can see that some simple changes in our diets could make quite a difference. Thank you for writing about this topic. Many up votes and definitely sharing!

Healthylife, great article! I was aware of the concept of alkaline vs. acid but have kind of "forgot" about it, so to speak. This is excellent material, and I plan to re-read it, to see what changes I might be able to make to our (my husband and mine) diet to try to incorporate these principles.

Voted up and shared. Welcome to Hubpages! I look forward to reading more of your great articles.

Yes the breakdown is alkaline and that is what matters! In fact lemon water is very alkaline forming but may test acidic if a strip was used. Many people are confused by this distinction.

    • Doodlehead profile image

Doodlehead 5 years ago from Northern California

That was putting the strips in the coconut water, not the breakdown. Do you think the breakdown is alkaline?

Some people are confused and make the mistake of looking at whether the actual food is acidic or alkaline. You have to look at whether it is alkaline forming or acid forming in the body since that is what causes the dangerous acid residue buildup. Was the pH of 5.5 based upon someone putting a pH strip directly in the coconut water? If so that information would not be helpful or accurate. I agree that if you do something daily or frequently you have to investigate!

I too have seen coconut water under alkaline, but does that mean:

it's breakdown process breaks down to alkaline? Because pH 5.5 is definitely on the acidic side.

Re-reading your comments above...."full of alkaline minerals". I know it has lots of potassium and sodium...which are electrolytes....I have to find this out because I love the stuff....it is the most thirst-quenching thing I know of and I am drinking so much of it.....

Hi Doodlehead! This health stuff can be confusing! During my research I found coconut water was on the chart under highly alkaline and other articles said it was full of alkaline minerals and the best alkaline forming food. It has so many beneficial health properties that I'm going to give it a try. I recommend using pH strips to see if your body is alkaline. Read the instructions but the urine can be slightly acidic in the morning but should change to alkaline. You have to watch for a trend.

Oh-oh---I looked up the pH of coconut water, and several sources say the pH is only in the mid "5" range!!!! Oh no...I have been drinking a bottle a day.

The some sites still say it is alkaline. Now I am confused.

novascotiamiss...The best place to find the ph test strips are either a health food store or online. Two days ago I looked for them at the pharmacy and they don't carry them but some pharmacies do. Soda is definitely acidic and people have to determine whether foods or beverages are acid forming or alkaline forming after digestion. You are right about lemon being alkaline..many people suggest starting the day with lemon water to help keep their body alkaline. Thanks so much for the kind comment!

This is a great and well researched article. While most people are aware that alcohol and coffee contain a lot of acid, most are totally oblivious to the fact that sodas are extremely acidic (especially the diet sodas) and anything else containing artificial sweeteners. Freshly squeezed lemon is very alkaline. So we are totally mislead by the taste, thinking that sour is automatically acidic and sweet alkaine. In most cases it's exactly the opposite. Your table shows that beautifully. By the way, I recently tried to purchase a ph testing kit but I haven't had any luck so far. I asked at the pharmacy but they said they no longer stock it. They couldn't tell me where to get one.

Several years ago I was made aware of the importance of an alkaline level. I told a friend who has interstitial cystitis and she saw tremendous improvement after increasing her alkalinity. We eat many raw vegetables and drink alkaline water. You are so wise to do this especially with your medical history.
