As you know diabetes affects millions of people globally, in fact, that number is around 382 million people worldwide.

Type 1 diabetes is an auto-immune disease and often does not have any symptoms, while Type 2 is mainly driven by lifestyle and aligned to obesity. There are so many people in the world who do not realise that they have this condition - over a million of them live in the UK.

Type 2 diabetes is on the rise in every country and for those with diabetes or at risk of developing it, diet becomes crucial.

  • Diabetes in Asian people is five times the rate of white people and India is becoming the diabetes capital of the world.

Mediterranean Diet dramatically lowers risk of Diabetes

American College of Cardiology revealed in their 2014 Annual Meeting that eating a Mediterranean diet is linked to a 21% lower risk of developing diabetes and a 27% reduction in risk among people at risk of cardiovascular disease.

This lowered risk factor remains true across all population groups.

The Mediterranean diet is heavy in fresh fruits, wholegrains and vegetables, beans, nuts, fish, eggs, olive oil and a glass of red wine. Yay.

Generally one limits red meat to no more than a few times a month, eat plenty of fish and eggs, eat poultry at most twice a week and use spices and herbs to flavour food rather than salt.

Eat seasonally, and cook your food in the same manner it's cooked by those countries on the Mediterranean.

Refined carbs lack nutrients and can play havoc with your blood sugar so the right thing to do is eat whole wheat or quinoa..

Sip espresso after meals to aid digestion or drink a green tea and mint.

Nuts in all their varieties are good for you, however, almonds are higher in protein, fiber, calcium, vitamin E, riboflavin and niacin when compared ounce for ounce. Diabetes cases have doubled globally over the last 30 years and this is linked to the growing obesity epidemic.

· Keep a level, healthy weight

Who should be screened for Pre-diabetes?


Overweight adults age 45 and older and those under 45 who have one or more of the following risks:

  • Habitually physically inactive
  • Previously told they have impaired glucose tolerance
  • A family history of diabetes
  • Had gestational diabetes or given birth to a child weighing more than 9 lbs
  • Have high blood pressure
  • Have polycystic ovary syndrome
  • Have a history of vascular disease.
  • Elevated cholesterol

Are your Blood Sugars out of Control?


If you have diabetes, check your levels every day with a meter. Preferably on waking before you eat anything. Write the results down, in order that your Doctor can see how you respond to treatment.

1. Frequent urination and thirst are two classic diabetes signs caused by too much sugar in the blood.

2. Fatigue – especially after a big meal

3. Feeling dizzy or shaky is a sign of low blood sugar, which can be life threatening if not addressed.

4. If you have high blood pressure and diabetes you risk damage to your kidneys and as water builds up, you hands and feet may swell.

5. Numbness or tingling in your hands and feet can be another sign of chronically high sugars.

6. High blood sugar can cause blurred vision, spots, lines or flashing lights and if this is your problem have your eyes checked now.
