Let us Draw a Fine Line Between Normal and ADHD for our Children

Updated on April 20, 2017

What is ADHD?

ADHD also called Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is just a mere jargon to stigmatize a bunch of playful young children or does it really has something which we should really worry about. According to scientific world ADHD has 3 common symptoms or disorders. They are attention deficit, hyper activity, and impulsivity.

Now if you ask any parent about their kids, they are always playful, naughty etc. etc. Well are they suffering from ADHD? What is the scale? Where is the parameter to measure it? No we don’t have any definitive answer for all these questions. According to study boys are more prone to ADHD while girls are less. In general observation girls are always more inclined to stick to discipline rather than boys. So the confusion of detecting ADHD or not is not is not so easy.

There is a fine line between normal playful kids than real ADHD kids.

As we know that the key behavior of ADHD is Inattention and hyperactivity. According to Doctor’s language kids can have issue with one of the behavioral problem or can have both. Usually children’s often diagnosed with both issues when counsel for ADHD.

In preschool or playschool, the most common ADHD symptom is hyper-activity. Well It is normal to have some in-attention, un-focused motor activity and impulsiveness, but for kids with ADHD, these behaviors are more severe and frequent.

Now here start the confusion what is normal and what is ADHD??

Inattention

Symptoms associated with inattention in medical dictionary
Confusion associated with inattention to judge really
Overlook or miss the details, make careless mistakes in schoolwork, home work, or during other activities
This is common for most child in all age group and gender, even adult often does it

Having problem in sustaining attention in any tasks or play, including conversations, lectures, or story reading
Average attention span for any kids is 10-15 min. Now the question what point we should start our timer to define ADHD.

Not organizing bench, paper, room
Common for all child
Loosing common things like pencil, pen, paper, eyeglass, eraser
Common for normal child

Now here is some behavior which is really straight forward and may be we need professional medical advice.

  • Frequent fidgeting and squirming when seated in their seat
  • Unable to play quietly and concentrate on the favorite hobbies
  • Constantly in motion and tendency to stand all the time while seating for some serious activity
  • Talking constantly and often talking meaningless
  • Impatient and blurting out answer before asked, not waiting for turn even after taught for several times

Core Factors

Contributing Social Factor

Overworked parents sometimes try to subdue their kids with some kind of medication, which can be really dangerous.

Lack of spending time with kids

  • Exposure to environmental toxins or contraceptive during pregnancy
  • Exposure to environmental toxins, like lead during infant
  • Low birth weight
  • Brain injuries during birth

Active , Hyper active or Playful

Diagnosis for ADHD a Little More Complex

Based upon the physical behavior at limited period of time by medical phycologist, or consular, it is often hard to determine the real disease. A single day visit is often confounding. Unless the kids have a real severe symptoms it’s hard to diagnose. The most important reason is there is no biochemical test as of now to detect this disease. But recently a study have been publish in The Lancet Psychiatry by Dr. Hoogman, showing people with ADHD have smaller brain size. Possible delayed brain development. ADHD diagnose children showed 3-4 % smaller brain volumes in all regions—the frontal lobes (allow us to solve problems, plan ahead of time, understand the behavior of others, and restrain ourselves from any impulsive activity), temporal gray matter(sensory perception, memory, speech, emotion) and cerebellum(motor coordination). After these study there is some hope to detect this disease for sure doing MRI. This will definitely help kids not to become scapegoat of some human made social epidemic.

Most Important Therapy for ADHD for Kids are Love and Happy Family

There are several medication available in the market to treat this disease. But some of them have serious side effect like headache, loss in appetite, feeling weak. But let us think twice before introducing these little munchkin with all those drugs. A perfect picnic time with kids and playing tennis with them can help and teach them a lot. Giving her little responsibility each day by giving him or her own pet to care, can make huge difference. Rewarding even for a little something they did, will make them proud and they will act much better next time. Reading a little bed time story can help them feel calm and expand their imaginative mind.

In summary there are lot of small things every day we can do to empower our kids and make a healthy generation for future and let them bloom as they like.
